I straightened my tie in the cramped office bathroom, staring at my reflection.
I barely recognized the man staring back.
Once, I had been confident—sharp suits, tidy hair, easy smiles.
That was when I did not have a proper job.
Now, years of overtime, stress, and neglect had left me overweight, pale, and hollow-eyed.
I’m just 28, but my hair was already thinning at the temples. Dark circles hugged my eyes like shadows that refused to leave.
I shook my head, trying to shake off the nerves.
“I have a decent job. My pay is good. I’m qualified for marriage.” I told myself.
But all these rehearsals did little to nothing to calm the storm of doubt in my chest because I knew in the back of my mind that even the single moms in my neighborhood were ignoring my fat ass.
“Just say it,” I muttered to myself. “Just say it, Caleb. It’s only your heart on the line. The worst she can say is…”
My lips pressed together.
I walked out of the bathroom. Slow and steady, trying to not appear nervous.
At my desk, my blonde colleague, Sherry, leaned over her designs.
Her brown hair spilled like liquid silk over her shoulders.
She glanced over and smiled at me.
It was just a faint smile, but it boosted my confidence.
I would fight the world to keep that smile next to me for life.
Taking a deep breath, I approached her. “Sherry… Can we talk for a moment?” My voice sounded weaker than I intended.
Sherry straightened up, her eyes patient but distant. “Sure. What’s on your mind?”
My palms grew slick with sweat.
I have known her for five years, ever since I joined this company.
I’m sure she likes me.
I adjusted my tie one last time, staring at the office floor.
“If you forgot what’s on your mind, you can tell me later,” Sherry said.
“Sherry, I… I like you,” I blurted, voice shaking slightly. “I’ve liked you for a long time, and I can’t keep it in anymore.”
The words hung in the air.
Sherry didn’t even blink.
I put my hand in my pocket and took out a box that had the rings.
She immediately held my hand and tried to push the box back into my pocket. She looked around, as if she hoped that nobody was watching.
But many eyes were already watching.
“S-Sherry…” my voice cracked.
“Don’t do this, Caleb,” Sherry hissed in a low voice. “You are a good friend, but I don’t feel that way about you. I’m sure if you hit the gym, you’ll find someone in your league.”
The rejection hit me like a sledgehammer.
I forced a nod, swallowing the lump in my throat, and muttered, “You are not joking, right?”
I just had to make sure that she was being serious.
“Of course,” she replied in a low voice. “Don’t ever do this again.”
I walked back to my desk, my legs feeling like lead.
Sherry grabbed her bag and left.
It seems I ruined her day.
Some female employees just went past my desk, giggling and smirking. Some male employees came to me and told me that I never had a chance.
I didn’t even bother to react to their insults. I was just too lost and shocked that the person I imagined my whole future with just rejected me.
Burying my head on the desk, I silently let the tears come out.
Later that afternoon, I went to the cafeteria.
I sat down at an empty table.
Sherry also came, but she sat at another table and was eating a sandwich.
I found myself chewing the burger, but it did not taste good, and it was not going down my throat easily.
Normally, I’d eat this burger in two bites, but today was different.
One of our colleagues, Mike, a tall and slender man, approached Sherry and asked, “Will you go out on a date with me?”
My heart felt squeezed when she smiled at him and nodded without hesitation.
The remaining burger in my hands dropped and fell on my pants.
My chest tightened like never before.
Without even bothering to wipe my pants clean, I got up and left the cafeteria and then the company building.
I took a taxi and got home.
I lived in a single bedroom flat as it was affordable.
There was a fat crow waiting at the front gate. I randomly fed it scraps, so it must be waiting for me. It hovered around my head, cawing relentlessly.
I was in a pissed off mood, so I swatted it with my briefcase.
It flew away and landed on a branch in the distance.
“Not today!” I yelled at the crow. “Go away. If possible, don’t come back.”
I then dragged myself into the small apartment I’d barely maintained in the last few years.
I tried to loosen the tie, but it didn't happen.
I stopped in front of the mirror, which wasn’t big enough for my whole body to fit. It was a cheap mirror I bought long back in a back alley market.
The face in the glass looked dull, tired, broken, unremarkable and almost unrecognizable.
The cheeks that puffed from stress, and the uneven stubble that made me look like a buffoon… there was nothing in the mirror that I could appreciate.
No wonder Sherry did not accept my love.
My eyes teared up at the sudden realization of how worthless I have become.
“I hate you!” I shouted at the one in the mirror, then grabbed the mirror with both hands and smashed it on the floor, shattering it to pieces.
Some of the broken glass pieces pierced me and made me cringe in pain.
All the glass pieces melted and merged into my skin. “Krgh!” The remaining pieces on the floor also turned into light and penetrated my body.
I was momentarily blinded by the light.
“What… what the…” I stammered, stepping back.
A voice echoed, sharp and direct. “You who hate yourself have awakened the Dream Lover System.”

However, he didn’t feel bad.It was the opposite. He felt a sense of coldness coming from the ground and seeping into his body and healing him faster.“This…” In less than a minute, all the fatigue was gone.He was amazed by it.“Is this your work, Dreamie?” he asked.[You were hugging the ground and were healing yourself. I just accelerated the process.] the system replied.“I had no idea that lying on the ground has such a benefit,” Caleb nodded in understanding. “Will you heal me speedily like this every day?” he expectantly asked.[Yes. But only after you finish the Daily Dirt Mission o

Caleb returned to his apartment. The kids were both sleeping soundly in the back.Velma tried waking them up, but they weren’t responding.“Don’t wake them,” Caleb said. “I’ll bring them to your flat.”She was surprised. “You’ll carry them?”“Yeah.”Velma’s expression slightly changed. (Is he trying to get into my flat using this excuse?)She stepped out of the car.Caleb picked up both the kids into his arms without any issues. He went ahead into the apartment. She quickly followed him. “I was expecting your car to give us some trouble, but it didn’t. I won’t say I’m not surprised.”“Well, we shouldn’t judge things by their appearances,” Caleb said.“Y-You’re right,” Velma smiled somewhat. They took the elevator to reach the first floor. She opened her flat door, and then he dropped the kids on the bed. The four other kids were not sleeping but running and playing around. As Caleb was leaving, “Thanks for everything, Caleb.”Caleb just nodded and was walking away.“Be careful,” she
CHAPTER 32
Even though Ben was singing and his friends were dancing, Velma’s kids sensed the tension in the atmosphere and hid behind their mother.“Ben, there’s no need to go this far,” Velma quickly said. “Caleb, apologize to him.”Ben snickered as he did a wave dance with his legs while standing at the same spot. “He should get on his knees and start kissin’ my boots… before my crew writes his ending in tire marks and bruised suits.”“Caleb, get on your knees,” Velma insisted.“I already said my piece,” Caleb replied. “I will apologize if he apologizes to me first.”“Don’t bark big lines, bro,” Ben said. “You’re going to regret, though.”His two friends rushed in and crafted spinning kicks.Caleb took a couple of steps back and dodged them, though only barely. But a quick side kick followed and struck Caleb in the diaphragm, taking the breath out of him.He was pushed back a couple more steps. A frown creased his face. The food bags were on the ground now.“Get down, Caleb,” Velma said. “And
CHAPTER 31
“Take your fucking hand off of me, trash,” Caleb said these words, and he wasn’t even prompted by the system this time.He did it all on his own.Ben saw something like primal rage flicker in Caleb’s eyes for a second, and he pulled his hand back before he knew it.Still, he was quick to recover. “What did you just say?”“There are children here,” Caleb added. “Or I would have used more appropriate words for you,” Caleb retorted.“Caleb!” Velma hissed at him. “Do you know who this man is? He’s a famous rapper. He makes five figures every year. He owns a big house and a luxury car.”“So what? I’m never going to date him,” Caleb replied.Silence fell for a moment.Velma didn’t think Caleb would have such a twisted sense of humor. For the first time, she had a positive impression on him. But, of course, she did not show it in front of Ben.“You should apologize to him,” Velma said.“I will,” Caleb said.“Hmph,” Ben snorted with pride.“But only if he apologizes to me first for calling me
CHAPTER 30
In the time Caleb took to reach the restaurant, Velma received three calls from three different men.She told them she was at a restaurant and had all three of them send money to her.“These idiots only sent me thirty dollars each, even though I told them I came here with my kids,” Velma snorted. She received ninety dollars in total and still wasn’t happy about it in the slightest.“Mm?” She looked at Caleb. “What? Why are you looking at me? Are you jealous that I get paid by my boyfriends?”“We’ve arrived,” he replied.“Oh…”The kids got out first, but Velma didn’t. She was looking at Caleb. “You don’t have to sweat, Caleb. No one expects a Brokie like you to pay. I don’t, either. So, don’t worry. The bill is on me.”Caleb frowned a little. “No. I’ll pay,” he said reluctantly, not because he wanted to pay for her meals but because of the system’s condition. And then Caleb got out of the car.Velma slightly chuckled. “Men are so easy to manipulate. You just rub their eyes a little, an

“What’s the restaurant name?” Caleb asked.“Backfire,” Velma said.“That’s like five miles from here.”“Yeah. So?”“Nothing,” Caleb knew better than arguing with this woman.“Uncle,” the little girl looked at Caleb. “How much do you earn in a week?”“I don’t get paid weekly. I have a proper job. I get paid monthly,” Caleb said.“How much?”“Enough,” he replied.Caleb saw a woman ahead, asking the passing cars for lift. But nobody stopped for her. However, when she saw Caleb’s car, she didn’t even bother asking for a lift.It hurt Caleb’s pride a little.“Stop. That’s my friend,” Velma said.“Huh?” Caleb stopped the car. “We can’t let her in. Did you look at her size? The car would flip over if she sits in the back.”“C’mon, she’s probably the same weight as you.”“No. She’s at least fifty pounds heavier than me,” Caleb quickly retorted.“Let me just walk with her for a minute,” Velma said.Caleb reluctantly reversed the car and stopped by the obese lady standing on the road.Velma ste
