Ash Between The Snow
Snow fell like scattered feathers, soft and quiet over the thatched rooftops of Emberfall, a sleepy village cradled in the shadow of the Cradle Peaks. Smoke drifted from chimneys. The air smelled of pine resin and frost, carrying the distant creak of trees weighted with ice. The world seemed peaceful, as if winter itself had settled in for a nap.But Ash knew better.Winter's coming meant the worst was on its way.He stood at the edge of the frozen lake, boots resting on cracked ice, holding a charcoal pencil in one hand and a worn sketchbook in the other. His fingers were numb, but he didn’t feel it. His breath misted, and in its ghostly curl, he saw it again— the dream.A colossal dragon of golden flame, roaring in agony, its body pierced by obsidian spears. A crown of fire splitting the heavens. His own reflection staring back at him, with glowing ember eyes.Ash blinked, and the vision vanished with the mist."No, not again." His voice was a bare whisper even the wind threatened t
The Flameborn Dream
The first thing Ash heard was the crack. It echoed through a golden void— the sound of something bizarre and ancient breaking open. Before him hovered an egg, radiant as the sun, suspended in nothingness. Veins of molten gold streaked across its shell, pulsing like a heartbeat. Then the egg cracked again. A sliver broke away, and a roar— ancient, soul-deep, world-splitting— erupted from within.Wings of flame burst outward.Ash staggered back, though he had no body here— only consciousness, floating in a realm made of a memory that was not his. The newborn dragon uncurled from the egg’s remains, its scales gleaming like hammered light, its eyes burning with intelligent sorrow. It opened its mouth again—And spoke."Asharion Veytrix… the last flame is yours to carry."Ash tried to speak, but fire consumed his lungs. The dream melted into white light. Then, a moment later...He awoke with a gasp, drenched in sweat despite the bitter cold. Smoke and ash filled his nose, causing him to co
A Fire In The Snow
The smoke from Emberfall had long since disappeared, the day that had started with hope and sunshine was ending very badly for Ash. He was more confused than ever, he barely dragged his own weight as he followed the elf.More than once she would disappear through the trees to scout ahead and return to find him cold and lifeless. Ash had never ventured this deep into the forest. The trees here towered, ancient and gnarled, their roots choked with snow and the shadow of the thick leaves.Snow blanketed the world in white. Ash dragged his legs until he finally stopped. Every time he exhaled puffs of hot air left his lungs, he looked down at his feet then at his hands. He exhaled his words in a deep sigh."I'm not going."Those were the only words that left his mouth. The elf girl paused where she stood a few feet away, her skin tight suit covered every inch of her body except her hands. The material like leather but softer and of elven make, he was sure it kept her warm. Her long white h
Fault
Chapter 4: FaultThe flames crackled on the wood, sending coils of smoke twisting into the night air. Ash sat with his knees drawn to his chest, the scorched rabbit untouched at his side. Across from him, the elf licked the last bits of meat from her fingers with a feral sort of grace. Her eyes, pale as frost under moonlight, held no warmth. He swallowed, breaking the silence. “You were saying something about how humans broke the peace in the world.""So, what about it?" She replied coldly.Ash raised his voice. "Why won’t you tell me anything?”She didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she leaned back against the tree trunk behind her and closed her eyes, as though his question were a passing breeze.Ash’s fingers tightened around his knees. “You said something about gods… about dragons. About the balance of the world.”“I did.” Her eyes slid open, hard now. “And I won’t say more.”“Why not?” He asked, his voice low and heavy. She snorted, low and dry. “Because I don’t share sacred tru
Breathless
Chapter 5: BreathlessAsh chewed like a corpse gnawing through dirt, it was dry, mechanical and unfeeling. The apple pulp clogged his throat, heavy as clay. He didn't stop. His jaw moved, cracking through skin and flesh as his hollow eyes stared into nothing. The apple had lodged itself there. He blinked once. And then everything blurred, a jolt of pain twisted up his windpipe. But no breath came, no air followed. Just silence and the frantic thunder of his pulse. When the coughing subsided, Ash swallowed the last of the apple and realized, with a dull, awful certainty, that he did not deserve to live. The ember beneath his skin pulsed once, faint and indifferent— a heartbeat that threatened to outlast him if it had to.A few feet away, the elf watched him with horrified eyes. Her expression tightened, she wanted to look away from the horrible sight but she couldn't. The quiet was cut short by a strange, guttural gag— and then a thud. She froze.Ash was on the ground, body jerking, mo
Two Ghosts In The Snow
Night had painted the world in deep blues and ink-blotted shadows. The forest stretched endlessly, thick with the scent of damp bark. Moonlight filtered in slivers between leaf and branch, ghosting over the sleeping trees like breath on cold glass.Ash sat motionless against the trunk of a gnarled oak, knees drawn to his chest. His eyes, empty yet alert, stared through the flickering fire that barely warmed the clearing. The embers hissed softly, as if whispering secrets only they could understand.Across from him, the elf didn’t blink. She hadn’t in hours. Her silver eyes, sharp as knives beneath her hood, remained trained on him—on his wrists, his hands, the shift of his breathing. She held her dagger loosely at her side, but the tension in her muscles said she was ready to move, to stop him if he so much as twitched the wrong way.She hadn’t slept, since the sky dimmed into dusk and certainly after his failed suicide attempt earlier. She had a lot on her mind and his current state
You Can't Fix What's Not Broken
Ash woke up, surprised he had even managed to sleep after the events of the night before. It was already daybreak and the snow that had covered the world in the night was almost gone. The forest was green and bright, the birds singing in the sky every critter out on the move. What had him more surprised was the fact that his elf companion did not wake him the way she usually did. The bodies of the beasts were no longer where they were the night before and that startled him."Elf lady?" Ash called out, his eyes scanning the tree branches above for any sign of her. But silence greeted him instead."Did she leave me?" His voice broke as he spoke and his heart fell into a cold pit. "It's all my fault."He felt a hot slap on the back of his neck causing him to hiss out in pain. His skin burned hot from the impact. He turned back to see the elf standing there, her face looking more worn out than pale, her eyes had dark bags under them like she had not slept. Or she had cried all night.A pi
Selunara's Descent
A voice echoed, soft and melodic— a woman’s voice, familiar and warm.“My little moonbeam, your mother and father wish the best for you. Don’t forget—you are a daughter of Lunaria and Caluran. If you ever find yourself in an impossible situation… remember this.”A small elf girl with short white hair, neatly braided, sat on a tree stump in a thin, beautiful dress. She stared up at her parents, their faces hidden by the sun’s glare.“…don’t pray to the moon goddess. Or the dragons. Or the wind. Pray to no one.”“Fight. With all your heart.”“For your survival. To live.”The current slammed into her again, and the temperature plummeted. She could feel her shoulder wound freezing to the bone. She gasped for air, tried to swim, and scanned the shore— there was no sign of Ash. Fear stabbed through her… until she spotted him lying on the riverbank, safe. Relief surged through her body. She fought harder, but the current surged even more against her. Her limbs grew numb. Soon, she couldn’t
Whispers
The morning light broke across the trees in slanted gold blades. Frost clung to every branch, and the snow cracked under her barefoot pivot. Her silver eyes cut through the fog like daggers of their own.Ash watched the elf girl training just as the sun had risen, she had said she wanted to loosen her muscles but he suspected she just wanted to see if anything changed in her body after contact with the goddess the night before. When he had woken up he had found her training, she said nothing more than needed to. He was glad to see she was fine.He cuddled the leopard pup in his arms, it had seemed to realise that he gave more warmth than the world around him so it never left his side.Ash wished for one thing above any other and that was a steaming, sweet bowl of soup. "Hey can I join you? You could teach me."The elf paused mid slash and looked at him, her silver eyes reflecting the sun's rays. "I will not be teaching a human boy, sacred traditional combat."Ash frowned at her. "I ha
Silhouette
In the dark of night covered by snow and cold, the only source of warmth for the cake from the fire in their midst. The party of six sat around the fire, their weapons by their sides. They drank and laughed together, their leader Korran Hoxshore was silent. He stared into the eye of the fire and watched it like it was a strange thing. He could see the eyes of that dark figure staring back at him from the fire.He looked down at the bottle in his hand and sighed. "Too much ale will do this to a man."In all his years of banditry nothing he had learned had prepared him for what happened next. The fire was sniffed out by a cold wind, the sky went dark, no stars, no moon.A dark chuckle permeated through the darkness, one Korran had experience with. A few seconds later the flame caught fire back but this time all his men were gone. There was a figure sitting opposite him."No, not this damn nightmare again." He screamed as he reached for his axe and thrust it at the space between them. "W
