Chapter 1 - Praise the Sun
Dorlan is the central region of Alandavor, the known world. It is the main home of humans and is divided into three kingdoms. Separated by extensive mountain ranges from one another, each of these domains also has unique ethnic, cultural, and geographic characteristics.Peace has long prevailed in the region, with good commercial and diplomatic relations between the kingdoms of Doknar and Trabarioth, and a somewhat more fragile relationship with the eastern kingdom of Elbarie. The northern region of Rimdail is in a permanent state of civil war, causing refugees from the north to constantly arrive in search of new lands or asylum.Despite these issues, the main threat comes from the west, originating from the region of Bloodmere, home to orcs, goblins, and straggling humans from different cultures. The dark region’s attempts to seize Dorlan led to the Great Invasion led by the green skins over five hundred years ago, in which they were expelled by the defenders who established Doknar a
Chapter 2 - The Mercy of Leiorus
Two days had passed since the attack on the village of Arretheart. Thanks to the heavy storm and the nearly constant rain, the healer had been able to hide her tracks. However, the orcs pursuing her had a sense of smell nearly as sharp as bloodhounds. She was now running through a muddy swamp, within a small grove of trees. She was already close to Hobbaristal and would have reached it sooner, had the direct path not been blocked by a large number of invading green-skins. Her only option was to continue straight toward Doknar. Her lungs burned like fire, and sweat dripped from her forehead, despite her decent physical condition. The evening was gray, with a faint but freezing drizzle. Thunder drowned out all other sounds, but from time to time, she could still hear the curses and shouts of the orcs—closer with every passing minute. She slipped in the mud and fell face-first to the ground, shielding the baby with her body. She cursed inwardly, got up with difficulty, and kept running.
Chapter 3 - Sir Kalen 'Fal
“…Dragons are wise, boy—far wiser than you or I, or even both of us together. The Order of Dragma hunted them for many years, and some believe they wiped them out completely. Others, who also believe in their wisdom, claim that the dragons learned to take another form and that today, at least some of them walk upright among humans. The truth is, something has happened—because every so often, once in a great while, you hear of dragons again. And if you're lucky, you might even see one…”—Arcalom the Archdruid.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The knight was at Wolf’s Pass, approaching the city of Doknar. The sunset had just begun to cast its orange beams through the few clouds that crossed the sky. An evening breeze stirred the rider’s blond hair and made the brown cloak—draped over the white robes of his order—flutter gently.Just before reaching the gate, he stopped the horse with a simple click of his ton
Chapter 4 - The Right Man for the Job
The next day, after the sunrise prayers and breakfast, the knight went once more to meet with his master, who welcomed him with the same warmth as the night before. Upon entering his quarters—modest, considering the high rank of Rhien Mildavar—he invited him to sit."Brother Kalen, have you heard anything about the High Solífice during your travels?" Rhien asked."The last I heard, he was crossing into Elbarie on a solification mission in the warm lands… but as far as I know, he should already be on his way back. And how have things been around here with the king?"At that moment, the master leaned back and raised his arms to the sky."Our great Kendraith III personally entrusted us with the care and education of the two princes… for an entire season..."Kalen opened his eyes wide."The princes spent a whole season at the fortress? That’s hard to believe.""Indeed… and, if I’m being honest, I’d rather be caught in the middle of a skirmish in the frozen lands of Rimdail up north than l
Chapter 5 - The Enemy Within
That night came with a heavy storm, bringing with it the dissonant melody of thunder, preceded by lightning strikes that wrote a song of terror and sorrow—especially for those without shelter. The knight and his companion were finishing their preparations to head west, toward the region of Hobbaristal and the coast of the Ederia Sea.Kalen ‘Fal had told Galfrido about the mission. The latter listened to the part about the prophecy with mild disinterest—perhaps because Kalen himself didn’t seem fully convinced by the tale. Later, they agreed to depart the next day, with the blessing of the master, Sir Rhien Mildavar. Before dawn, they loaded the saddlebags onto their horses, assisted by an initiate named Alain. Kalen had to retrieve his chainmail first, which, fortunately, Brother Weylam had finished along with his dagger. Although the storm had calmed, a drizzle still lingered, chilling them to the bone and serving as a reminder of winter’s approach in the region. By the time the sun
Chapter 6 - Drako
The young man named Alain confessed to having received a large sum of gold crowns from a group of mysterious men in exchange for revealing the whereabouts of the child and helping get him out of Reidos Keep alive. He refused to say how they had contacted him, but he had realized the importance of what Rhien Mildavar was carrying in his arms when they returned from the cathedral, so completing the task hadn’t been difficult. The next day, by midday, Alain’s head was on a spike beside Doknar’s main gate. That afternoon, Sir Kalen ‘Fal, Galfrido, and Sir Rhien Mildavar gathered in the latter’s quarters.“The Brotherhood of the Black Flame is here,” said the maester. “And I fear they have compromised the order and, therefore, the safety of the child. The servants are whispering through the halls, and it’s only a matter of time before we’re betrayed again. The boy must be taken to Trabarioth as soon as possible.”“But we have to wait until winter passes, Brother Rhien,” Kalen protested."I
Chapter 7 - The Sharpshooters
The elf, sitting at the edge of a cliff, gazed out toward the distant horizon. The sky was clear, revealing the “Fireflies of Mistilanya” scattered across the firmament, with a smiling moon overhead. She was carving the figure of an archer into a piece of wood. Her purple—almost pink—hair danced in the early morning breeze, occasionally crossing her tanned face, which bore blue tattoos.Behind her, the vast forest of Amralas stretched on for miles and miles, by far the largest in the region of Núvodas. It had enjoyed a long period of peace, lasting at least several years. She relished not having to take part in the hunts or battles in the realm of men.Despite being a half-breed—half wood elf and half sea elf, which had earned her some distrust among her people, she felt at home. She looked at the freshly carved image of the archer and smiled, pleased to see that her skillful hands remained as steady as ever. That kind of craft was second nature to all elves, but she knew when to make
Chapter 8 - Dark and Light
The small grove they had found on a low hill served perfectly as a traveler’s shelter. They had marched for almost two days without rest, and it was time to stop. Throughout the entire journey, they had felt watched. Even though they hadn’t seen anyone nearby, the Brotherhood’s way of operating—from the shadows—kept them permanently tense, and that was exhausting.Night had fallen with heavy cloud cover, dancing in tune with the prelude to a storm.“Won’t be long before it starts raining,” said Kalen, looking up at the sky and feeling a breeze strike his face.“Just our luck. This season is always rainy. Autumn is clearly reluctant to give way to that damned winter. Can’t say I blame it.” Galfrido had managed to light a fire and was now warming some water in a small travel pot. His bearskin cloak rested on his back. “At least we won’t be short on water for cooking.”The knight covered the sleeping child with his cloak and placed him on an improvised bed of leaves near the fire. The li
Chapter 9 - The Hunter's Tale
She saw the glow of the fire in the distance. It might fool anyone else, but not a hunter of her skill. Still, she had to be extremely cautious—they were at least a day and a half ahead. The night was well advanced, but the sky was veiled in a thick layer of clouds. Lightning flashed in the distance, the thunder still somewhat timid in sound. She leaned against a rock and tightened the bandages around her leg and arm, still marked with fresh blood. The battle had been brutal, and though they had been defeated, she had made it out alive. She sighed, forced herself to stand, and resumed walking with care. There would be no rest—not if she wanted to catch up.The Dragon Knight, Nurbanduur, was with them. The child of prophecy. The last to be born. The one who could open the gates of the Abyss with his power… so close. The mountains to her left disappeared into the low-hanging clouds, and the terrain grew more rugged as it sloped upward toward the hillside. However, as long as she stayed
Chapter 10 - The Price of a Guide
The following day and night passed peacefully, despite the drizzle that had begun to fall. They had managed to cross the Orein River without trouble, using a massive transporter that could fit not only themselves and their horses but also five or six more people. No further tension arose between the paladin and the elf; the only thing left between them were the fleeting glances exchanged now and then.Kalen had asked Amadis the bard for a poem to gift Begryn when the moment was right. However, according to his own mind, that moment hadn’t arrived just yet. Galfrido noticed those exchanged looks but kept it to himself, displaying a level of stoicism surprisingly mature for someone of his nature. The next morning, with heavier rain now falling, they saw a wooden sign nailed to an old, twisted tree, pointing toward an inn on the road to the south. It was surely one of those rundown inns frequented by miners, farmers, and the occasional Doknar guard assigned to patrol the outer villages.
