CHAPTER 11
THE THRESHOLD OF POWERThe night air had grown biting, a sharp wind whipping through the concrete canyons of Manhattan, but the Smith family refused to move. They stood huddled on the public sidewalk, just inches from their car, their eyes fixed on the entrance, waiting for the new heir to walk in any moment from nowThey were a pathetic sight. Linda’s hair, usually a stiff helmet of perfection, was beginning to fray. Robert was frantically scrubbing at the oil stain on his sleeve with a cocktail napkin, and Leslie stood shivering. Her eyes were fixed on the revolving glass doors of the Rothwell Plaza like a gambler waiting for a final spin of the wheel.“He has to come through here,” Robert muttered, his teeth chattering. “The Master of Ceremonies said the Heir was on his way. There is only one VIP entrance. We wait, we intercept him, and we tell him that his inner circle… Harnes and that bastard Jack… are conspiring to ruin his reputation.” He said“He will listen,” Linda insist
CHAPTER 12
THE VANISHING KINGThe pulse of the city felt colder as the clock ticked toward 9:00 PM. Two hours had bled away into the dark, and the glittering crowd that had once filled the Rothwell Plaza was now a thin stream of departing luxury. Engines purred to life, and the scent of expensive perfume was replaced by the acrid smell of street exhaust. The Smiths were a haunting sight under the yellow hum of the streetlamps. Linda’s legs were cramping, her back stiff against the cold brick of an adjacent building. Bernard leaned against a fire hydrant, his phone battery dead, his pride even lower. Leslie and Robert stood near the curb, their eyes red-rimmed from the wind, scanning every face that exited the revolving doors."Where is he?" Robert croaked, his voice raw. "Every guest is leaving. The caterers are packing up. Where is the Heir?""He must have left through a private tunnel," Linda whispered, though her voice lacked conviction. "Or he is still inside, having a private meeting
CHAPTER 13
THE REAL CHAIRMAN The drive back to the Jaguar Estate was a suffocating experience. The interior of the Mercedes, once a symbol of their ascent into the upper class, now felt like a cramped cage. Robert gripped the steering wheel so hard the leather groaned, while Linda stared blankly out the window at the passing city lights."He never came," Bernard muttered from the backseat, breaking the heavy silence. "The Heir. He stood us up. He probably stayed in his penthouse and watched the whole thing on a security feed like a goddamn movie. He has made a fool of us.""No," Robert countered, his voice tight. "He was there. The Master of Ceremonies would not have announced the
CHAPTER 14
THE PERFECT TRAP The black Rolls-Royce Phantom sailed through the rain-slicked streets of Upper Manhattan; its engine was a silent ghost beneath the hum of the city. Inside the cabin, the atmosphere was thick with a strange and inverted tension. In the backseat, Martin Harnes sat stiffly, looking profoundly uncomfortable. In the driver’s seat, Jack sat with his hands relaxed on the wheel, the silver buttons of his chauffeur’s uniform catching the intermittent flash of streetlamps.Once they had cleared the heavy security perimeter of the Rothwell Plaza and merged into the thinning late-night traffic, Harnes finally broke the silence. He leaned forward,
CHAPTER 15
A NICE MOVIE FOR A NEW YEAR “That is according to you. I am looking for justice,” Jack corrected. “They spent four years treating me like I didn't exist. Now, I am going to return the favour. I am going to be the invisible hand that dismantles their lives piece by piece, and the best part is, they will be looking at you while I do it.” Jack reached out and pressed the button to release the rear door.“Go inside, Martin. Get some sleep. Tomorrow morning, you will have guests coming. They will be tired, they will be desperate, and they will be ready to sell their souls to you. Make sure the price is high.”Harnes stepped out of the car,
CHAPTER 16
Jack took a slow sip of the scotch, the liquid burning a path down his throat. He looked at his reflection in the dark window …the chauffeur’s cap still sitting on the desk beside him. Tomorrow, the Smiths would drive to Harnes’s private estate in Upper Manhattan. They would arrive with their heads bowed, ready to sell their souls to the man they thought was the King. And Jack would be there. He wouldn't be in the office, and he wouldn't be hiding. He would be in the driveway, holding the door for them. He wanted to feel the exact moment the air left their lungs when they realised that the man they had despised, the man they had mocked as a servant, was the one who decided if they would have a roof over their heads by nightfall.
CHAPTER 17
There, in the middle of the pristine driveway, was a man standing by the Rolls-Royce. He was casual and relaxed, his back turned to the gate as he buffed the chrome of the car’s grill. Even from a distance, the silhouette was unmistakable. The way he held his shoulders, the height, the effortless grace that she had once mistaken for laziness … it was Jack. But he didn't look like the broken man she had kicked out of her house. He looked like he belonged there. He looked like he owned the air he was breathing. "Mom... Robert... look," Leslie whispered, her voice trembling as she pointed through the bars. Linda and Robert stopped their shouting match and followed her finger. Their eyes narrowed as they spotted the figure in the distance. "Is that... Jack?" Linda hissed, her eyes widening in a mix of fury and confusion. "What is that loser doing there? And why is he
CHAPTER 18
A PEACE PACT The sun had climbed higher into the sky, the morning chill replaced by a stagnant, humid heat that made the interior of Robert’s Mercedes feel like an oven. Forty-five minutes had passed since Jack had disappeared into the shadowed grand mansion. For forty-five minutes, the Smith family had sat in a suffocating silence, their eyes fixed on the front door, jumping at every movement of a curtain or the flicker of a security light. Every minute that passed was a heavy blow to their pride, yet they sat there, trapped by their own desperation. Robert’s shirt was beginning to stick to his back, and Linda’s perfectly applied makeup was starting to crease under the stress.
CHAPTER 19
THE BEGINNING OF DOOM"But it will take time. Days, perhaps weeks. I have to wait for the right moment, a moment when he is inclined toward mercy. During this time, you must remain silent. You must not attempt to contact the office. You must not come to this estate again. And above all, you must stay away from the Tower.""We will. We promise," Linda exclaimed, nodding her head so vigorously her earrings rattled. "we will be invisible. we will wait for your call. Whatever you need, Martin," She said."And what about our houses?" Leslie asked, her voice small. "The bank said we have forty-eight hours.""I will see what can be done to delay the proceedings," Harnes lied, knowing full well that Jack had already instructed the bank
CHAPTER 20
THE PILLAR OF THE FAMILY Robert slammed his fist against the steering wheel, his breathing turning ragged. "The audacity. I told him. I told him I am staying. They are still treating me like I am some common squatter!" He blurted angrilyLinda reached over and patted his arm, her expression calm and maternal, though her eyes remained hard. "Robert, darling, remain calm. You heard that man … he is just a clerk following old orders. He said it himself: they haven't received the official information yet. It has only been twenty minutes since we left Harnes’s estate. It takes time for the paperwork to move through the system. " Linda said, tr
