CHAPTER ONE: Be careful what you wish for
"Have you ever felt disconnected from everyone and everything-like, the whole of reality?" I said, standing behind the counter and staring at the endless row of meat pies in the display case for absolutely no reason. "You just know there's more out there. You feel stuck right where you are, and the life you want feels so close you could almost smell it... and yet, somehow, it's miles away."I was pouring my heart out to Mark-my friend and colleague."Yeah, you're right," he replied absentmindedly.I looked at him. Of course. He was busy texting a girl while on the job.I sighed and muttered, "Why do I even bother?""What?" he asked without looking up."Oh, so that you heard," I replied."What are you talking about, bro?""Never mind. Let me see her," I said, leaning closer."She's pretty, isn't she?" Mark said, grinning."She's... alright, I guess," I said, quickly looking away so I wouldn't sound too eager-though she really was pretty."Isn't she way out of your league, though?" he c
CHAPTER TWO: Awakening the Blood
She was so beautiful I couldn't hold her gaze. My eyes dropped to the cracked, yellowed tiles on the floor."I'm sorry," I said quietly. "I have no idea what you're talking about."I kept washing my hands-even though they were already clean. I was drunk, frightened, and completely unsure of what to do next. Then I heard her footsteps. They were slow. Deliberate.I looked up through the mirror. She was right behind me now. Close enough that I could feel her breath on my back.I froze. Her hands reached forward and pressed against my chest."Whoa-what's going on?" I said, staggering a step sideways. She didn't move her hands. Instead, she stepped even closer."What are you doing?" I asked, my voice shaking."Your heart," she said, her eyes fixed on my chest. "It's beating very fast."She smiled faintly. "You have a good heart. Strong. Healthy."Then she looked up at me and chuckled softly."You might just get your wish after all."She smirked.Time seemed to stop as our eyes locked. The
CHAPTER THREE: The Hunger Awakens
"So... when are we leaving?" I asked the nurse. She placed a hand on my forehead, her brow furrowing. "Are you sure you're okay? You're starting to look pale-and your body is cold.""I feel perfectly fine," I said, smiling. She hesitated, then nodded. "Well... you're free to go."That was all I needed to hear.I stood up immediately and started changing my clothes."But it's past ten p.m.," she added. "Why don't you stay the night?""Thanks for your help," I said, "but I'd rather leave now."Mark just stood there, staring at me-like he was trying to figure out what was wrong with my face."As you wish," the nurse said, turning and walking away."Yo, what about the bill?" I asked Mark as I slipped on my sneakers."Oh, that?" he said. "Your babe already paid it."I paused and looked at him. "Daniella paid it?""Ohhh," he grinned. "So you agree she's already your babe. Nice one.""Shut up," I said. "Let's go, jare."As we walked down the hallway, my senses exploded.I could hear everythi
CHAPTER FOUR: Marked by the Night
I got home, locked the door, and crawled under the sheets without even changing my clothes. Sleep refused to come. I kept tossing and turning, my mind trapped on one thing—the girl. The girl from the bathroom.Who was she?Did she bite me?Was she a vampire?Vampires weren't real… were they?Yet there was something about her that didn't feel natural. Her skin, her face—too perfect, too pale. She looked young, no more than twenty-five, but there was an age behind her eyes, something ancient. I shut my eyes tightly and tried to remember what happened in the bathroom. At first, only flashes came.I was on the floor. There was pressure on my chest—tight, crushing. Her hand… her hand was beside mine. Was she whispering something to me?No.She was feeding on me.The memory snapped into place. I had been barely conscious, but now I remembered. When she was done, she sat up and wiped her mouth, calm and unbothered. Then she—I couldn't remember anything after that.I got out of bed and walke
CHAPTER FIVE: Awakened Hunger
I woke up in darkness. The space around me was tight—too tight. I could barely move left or right. There was only a thin gap on either side of my body. I tried to stretch my arms forward and couldn't.That was when it hit me.I was in a box.Panic surged through me, sharp and immediate. My breathing grew erratic. Before I could shout, before I could thrash, the lid above me slid open.Light poured in.Her face appeared. The girl from the bathroom. She smirked down at me. "I could hear your heartbeat getting faster."I sat up slowly, my movements stiff, my mind racing. As my vision adjusted, I realized exactly where I was.A coffin.A white wooden coffin, smooth and polished, with strange inscriptions carved along its edges. The symbols were unfamiliar, sharp and deliberate, written in a language I didn't recognize—but somehow felt.I climbed out.The room we were in took my breath away. The bedroom was massive, elegant in a way that screamed wealth without trying too hard. High ceilin
CHAPTER SIX: The First Kill
Inside, we took our seats. An elderly woman came to take our orders. The girl asked for a bottle of 5 Alive. Juliet and I ordered two Smirnoffs. As we sat there, she spoke passionately about Jesus—about love, sacrifice, and salvation. About the second coming and heaven.I heard none of it.All I could see was her neck.I couldn't hold back much longer.Juliet noticed and decided to act."I'm sorry to interrupt," she said kindly, "but what's your name?""Sarah," the girl replied."Well, Sarah," Juliet said, standing, "would you mind escorting me to the bathroom? I don't really like going alone.""Sure," Sarah said without hesitation. They walked toward the far end of the bar. Just before they turned the corner, Juliet glanced back at me—just for a second. That was my signal.I waited a full minute, then made my way to the women's bathroom. I pushed the door open abruptly. They were both inside.Sarah gasped in shock. Before she could say a word, I moved. In a blur of speed that wasn't
CHAPTER SEVEN: Shadow of Consequence
Maybe this was a mistake. Maybe he was a mistake.I stood by the door, listening to his heart-hammering wildly at first, then gradually slowing until it settled into a steady rhythm. He was asleep.I opened the door quietly and made my way downstairs. At the reception desk, I placed the bag-heavy, filled with the drained body of the girl-on the counter. I smiled at the receptionist. He didn't ask questions. He already knew what to do.He took the bag, set it gently on the floor beside him, and smiled back."It will be handled.""Good," I replied. "Keep this up and you might just get your wish sooner than you think."His face lit up instantly. He nodded eagerly.I turned and stepped outside, releasing a long, heavy sigh. Pulling my phone from my jacket, I called Tunde. He picked up almost immediately."Are you nearby?" I asked."Yes.""Meet me at the park."I ended the call. The park lay ahead of me-usually alive and crowded during the day, but now, close to midnight, it was empty. Sil
CHAPTER EIGHT: Awakening to Eternity
I arrived at the hotel and stepped into the lobby. It was mostly empty—just a few late-night guests wandering about, murmuring quietly, and a pair of female receptionists behind the desk. The faint hum of the air conditioner and the soft flicker of the lobby lights made the place feel unreal—too quiet, almost sterile, as if the city outside didn’t exist."Where is the one who was here before?" I asked, my voice low but edged with curiosity."If you mean Chinedu," one of them replied, her tone clipped, "his shift is over.""Okay." I nodded once, taking in the polished marble floor and the faint scent of disinfectant mixed with luxury air fresheners. "Is everything taken care of?""Yes, ma'am," she said carefully. "Everything… has been taken care of."I gave another polite nod, forcing a smile, and began to turn away—but stopped mid-step."Did either of you see my guest leave? Or did he come downstairs at any point?"The two women exchanged a subtle glance."Not that we noticed," one fi
CHAPTER NINE: Blood at Daybreak
"Wow," he said quietly. "Seems like there's a lot for me to learn.""There is," I replied. "Now let me rest for a bit. When the sun is up, wake me."I lay back down, and within seconds, sleep pulled me under. It didn't last.It felt like I had only just closed my eyes when I felt a gentle touch on my arm. I stirred as Daniel's soft voice reached me."Juliet… it's morning now."I opened my eyes and glanced toward the window. The sky was already glowing, the yellow sun slowly climbing into view. I sighed, swung my legs off the bed, and stood."Come on," I said. "Let's get breakfast."We headed for the lobby."Are we going on a hunt again?" Daniel asked as we stepped into the elevator."No," I said. "We're having a normal human breakfast.""Yuck." He grimaced. "The last time I ate human food, it was tasteless. I have a feeling it's going to be even worse now.""You're a vampire," I replied, "but you still need to look human. You can't draw unnecessary attention to yourself. So yes—you'll
CHAPTER TEN: The Weight of Immortality
"Haven't you had enough already?" I said sharply.Tunde was still feeding—locked onto the last surviving man, who barely had the strength left to struggle. At my voice, Tunde finally pulled away. He straightened, wiped the blood from his mouth with the back of his hand, and exhaled slowly, like someone coming out of a trance."So," he said calmly, "what do we do about the mess?"I stared at him. "You should've thought of that before you ripped them apart. Besides, we're in the middle of nowhere. I doubt the hunters will bother with this."He glanced down at the bodies. "So we just leave?""We take the car," I said, nodding toward it. "It looks decent enough. Can it get us to Ibadan?"Tunde circled the vehicle once, assessing it like a predator sizing up prey. "Toyota Camry," he said. "It'll do the job.""Great," I replied, already moving toward the passenger seat. "You're driving."I climbed in, but Tunde remained outside, standing still, staring at what was left of the men. I leaned
