Chapter 31: The Upcoming Mech Siege
The glow of the System interface appeared before Max and the other survivors.[ Global Event is Here! ][ Upcoming Hostile Operation: Mech Siege ][ Countdown: 48 Hours Remaining ][ Objective: Defend designated shelter against mechanical assault for 72 hours. ][ Failure Condition: Shelter destroyed. All survivors eliminated. ][ Rewards: Experience Points, Loot Drops, Survivor’s Medal, Potential Title Upgrade, and others ]’Right... thanks for reminding me,’ Max mused as he studied the message. He was about to dismiss the window when another notification immediately followed.[ Additional Notice: Enemy forces calibrated to shelter population and average level. ][ Estimated Enemy Composition: Sentinel Units, Swarmer Drones, and Beastframe‑class Units. ]After getting all this information, Max wasted no time.He gathered everyone in the central hall to discuss the matter. Survivors stopped what they were doing. Some were still clutching camouflage suits, others holding bowls of no
Chapter 32: Aya ’s Secret
Aya stood alone in the vacant chamber, waiting for an answer. However, there was no response. Still, she didn’t mind it as she knew that the spirit she was calling had an attitude. She whispered again, and this time, it sounded firm..."Come out..."Finally, the air shifted. A shadow moved at the edge of the chamber. It was faint and formless, yet undeniably present.Aya ’s heart pounded. She had felt this presence since the day she awakened her Talent, but she had never dared to speak to it directly when there were others around.[ Talent: Fifth Sin (Epic): Power grows as wealth is accumulated. Wealth includes food, tools, weapons, valuables, and resources. A Spirit companion bound to the user. ]When everyone was discussing their Talents before, she had lied. She had repeated the words whispered by the shadow at her side, Physical Strengthening Talent... Uncommon Rank...At first, she didn’t really want to lie, but the spirit companion sounded so scary. It was like a devil whisperi
Chapter 33: The A.I. Army’s Evil Plan
Max stared at the glowing System interface as he felt strangely calm. Finally, the wait was over...The countdown had ended, and they had done everything they could during the past couple of days. Haven‑45 was fortified, the survivors were armed, and his group had also prepared multiple plans in case defending the shelter failed. But then, he noticed some sort of changes in the system’s panel. It was quite similar to what had happened when he had been forcefully sent to A.I. Rebellion!’Shit...’ Max cursed as he didn’t like where this was going...[ Unexpected state detected... ][ Additional Notice: Due to the unique situation of this area, the attacking mechanical army will arrive at a higher tier. ][ Warning: Enemy strength increased. ][ Secondary Objective Added: Captured humans detected within mechanical forces. You may choose to save or ignore the lives of the captured humans. ][ Note: Decision will affect the final rewards. ]Max ’s eyes widened. "What...?"The other four
Chapter 34: Survivors
’What’s this?! Why am I still alive?’ She opened her eyes and saw the ground swaying beneath her.For a moment, she thought she was falling. Then the pain in her shoulders reminded her that she was still being hanged, upside down, tied cruelly to the chest of a marching Sentinel. Her name was Sera, though the machines didn’t care.To them, she was nothing more than a living shield, a body strapped to steel. Her long, ash‑blonde hair dangled toward the dirt, streaked with grime and dried blood. Every step of the machine jolted her, giving pain through her spine and ribs.It was horrible...She no longer struggled. She no longer screamed. Her cracked lips parted only to whisper to herself. They were words no one could hear.’Just let it end... let me die without pain.’Sera had once been a medic in the old world, tending to the wounded in a refugee camp after the collapse. She had saved lives with nothing but scraps of cloth and stubborn will. But when the Mechanical Civilization swept
Chapter 35: Arrival
The ground shook as the tunnel walls gave way.Max realized the Sentinels had been separated, so he made a decisive move. He raised his fist as a signal, and the rigged entrance collapsed.Crash! It happened so quickly... The east passage caved in, stone and steel crashing down in a storm of dust.Max had planned this carefully. Three tunnels were preserved for defense, while the rest had been rigged as traps to cripple the Mechanical Army. Two of the Hounds were caught instantly, most of their mechanical bodies buried beneath rubble.Thud! Thud!Their claws scraped against the debris as they tried to make their way about, but it only made the sound of shrieking metal against stone. The weight of the collapse pinned them fast.Furthermore, three Sentinels, marching in formation above, were also caught. One toppled sideways, its human shield swayed violently, while the other two Sentinels sank knee‑deep into fractured earth, their massive bodies were trapped in the wreckage.Max did
Chapter 36: Against the Sentinels
The heavy steps of the Sentinels shook the garbage field. At the same time, the chains rattled as the captives strapped to their mechanical bodies swayed helplessly.Clank... Clank...The Hound prowled ahead with its claws scraping against the ground as it scanned for enemies.Max didn’t hesitate when he saw what was happening. He raised his hand, not for another collapse, but for something different."Smoke!" he commanded.Immediately, survivors pulled the small canisters from the Stealth Cache . Pins were yanked, and thick plumes of gray smoke erupted across the battlefield. The haze spread quickly, swallowing the Sentinels and the Hound in a choking fog."Good..."Soon, their optics started overworking as they struggled to adjust. For a moment, the machines halted, scanning wildly with their vision disrupted. The survivors then disappeared into the haze, with their silhouettes slowly vanishing. Thanks to their camouflage suits from the same pack, they blended even further into the
Chapter 37: New Skills
The inferno raged until the Sentinels could no longer withstand it.Their mechanical frames warped, their cores overheated, and soon they collapsed into the flames.Just like that, the machines no longer moved! Then, in the midst of the smoke, Max and the five survivors glanced at the glowing notifications that appeared before their eyes.[ Enemy Unit Destroyed: Sentinel (D) ][ Experience Points distributed among all participants. ][ +300 Experience Points ][ Enemy Unit Destroyed: Hound (E) ][ Experience Points distributed among all participants. ][ +100 Experience Points ]Several more similar notifications appeared since six Sentinels and three Hounds had been defeated. The points were shared among the five, and although lower than before, they didn’t mind it at all.Furthermore, every survivor had finally reached Level 5!"I got it! My physique also improved!" Jett said. "Feels like I can work twice as fast now."Aya blinked as she checked her own notification. "I’m level 5
Chapter 38: Please, Work!
Max ’s eyes swept the field. He knew the Jetty was temporary. According to the system, the mech siege lasted seventy‑two hours or three days, and this was only the first batch. More mechanical soldiers would arrive soon, so they had to move quickly."Resource team," Max called out. "Start the salvage. We need every part we can get."The Resource Gathering Team hesitated for a moment. The process would be grim since there were human remains everywhere... Furthermore, none of them had much experience dismantling machines of this scale. These machines are too advanced for them. They might also make mistakes and destroy important parts of them. However, realizing that Max and the others would also assist, they immediately felt more confident."We... we’re on it, Leader Max !""Let’s go!"The team moved as they looked at the three Sentinels and two Hounds that were trapped in the collapsed part of the east tunnel. It was painted red since the blood and fleshly remains of human captives w
Chapter 39: Max ’s Resolve
The first thing Sera felt was warmth. It was faint, but real... She felt the soft heat brushing against her skin. For a moment, she thought it was the fire again, the flames searing her body as the Sentinels dragged her through the garbage field. As she reached this thought, her chest tightened, and a wave of panic threatened to overwhelm her.But then she realized the warmth wasn’t burning. It was actually gentle. At this point, she finally had the courage to open her eyes...’This...’The world above her was not steel, not chains, not the endless gray sky of the wasteland. Instead, she saw a ceiling of rough stone and wood. There was also the dim lantern nearby, giving her a decent view of the room. She blinked for a moment, still disoriented by her situation. Her mind was struggling to understand what was going on.Soon, she realized that she was lying on a bed. Her body was wrapped in bandages, her arms and legs bound not by chains but by cloth! The air was warm, not with smoke, b
Chapter 40: Guests
While Max was looking after the two rescued people, the salvage continued. In the store room, they pulled an Energy Power Cell from a Sentinel. To their surprise, it was still humming faintly!"What?!""Be careful! It might explode or something!"Ryan and Xander couldn’t help but feel worried that it might cause a disaster. However, Jett’s eyes remained calm."It’s alright. This... this is gold. Maybe we can power more devices, maybe even recharge the rifles if I can stabilize the output."Of course, he wasn’t sure how the rifle worked just yet. Still, he couldn’t help but imagine what he could do with this energy source.Soon, he looked at the Plasma Rifle.[ Item Obtained: Plasma Rifle ][ Description: A damaged standard‑issue rifle for the Sentinel unit. ]It was scorched and dented but not destroyed. He lifted it carefully, and it was heavy!Perhaps, if he didn’t consume the Gene Serum, he would struggle carrying this thing.Ryan turned to Jett. "Can you fix it?"Jett examined
