Chapter 1
The morning sun lit up the streets of Seoul as students rushed to their classes. Kim Baekho walked slowly, his hands in his pockets. His messy black hair fell over his eyes. His school uniform looked wrinkled and old."Move faster, you lazy bum!" A girl pushed past him. Her name was Kang Dami, and she was the top student in their class.Baekho yawned. "Too early.""The exam starts in five minutes!" Dami turned around and glared at him. "How are you so calm? This is the Hunter Academy entrance test!"Baekho shrugged. "I will probably fail anyway."Dami's face turned red. "You are impossible!"She ran ahead, leaving Baekho behind. He smiled a little and kept walking at the same slow pace. Other students ran past him, their faces full of worry and excitement. The Hunter Academy was the most important school in all of Korea. Only students who could awaken special powers could enter. These powers let people fight the monsters that came out of the Gates.Gates were mysterious doors that app

The industrial district smelled like rust and old machines. Abandoned factories stood like sleeping giants in the darkness. No one came here at night. It was too dangerous. But Baekho walked through the empty streets without fear.He knew exactly where to go. His body remembered this path even if his mind tried to forget. He turned left at the broken street lamp, then right at the old warehouse, then straight until he reached the fence with the hole in it.Beyond the fence was an empty lot. And in the middle of the lot was a Gate.It looked like a crack in reality itself. Purple light leaked from the edges. The air around it felt wrong, like it was too thick to breathe.Baekho climbed through the hole in the fence. As he got closer to the Gate, his phone buzzed. He pulled it out and saw a message from an unknown number."The payment is ready. Clear the Gate and the money is yours. 50 million won."Baekho deleted the message. He did this kind of work three times a week. Illegal Gates a

Baekho waited until they were far enough away. Then he moved to follow them. Not because he wanted to, but because the core was in the same direction. He kept his distance and used Shadow Step to stay hidden. The cave opened up into a huge chamber. In the center was a floating crystal that glowed with purple light. The Gate core. But there was a problem.A big problem. In front of the core was a monster that should not be there. An ogre. Grade B. Much stronger than the orcs. The ogre was sleeping, but it would wake up soon."That is not supposed to be here," Moon Rael whispered. "The sensors said this was a Grade C Gate!""The sensors were wrong," Lee Rowoon said. His face was pale. "We need to leave. Now."But it was too late. The ogre's eyes opened. It saw the three students and roaredThe sound shook the cave. Rocks fell from the ceiling."Run!" Choi Iseul screamed. They ran back the way they came. The ogre chased them. Its huge feet made the ground shake with each step.Lee Rowoon

The next morning, Baekho went to the academy like nothing happened. His eyes had dark circles under them. He yawned as he walked through the gates.Students gathered in the courtyard again. Today was the fourth test. The survival test in the real Gate.Instructor Oh Bora stood at the front with a tablet in her hands. Next to her was a tall man in a dark suit. His name was Professor Jung Beom, the head of the Combat Department."Listen carefully," Professor Jung Beom said. His voice was deep and commanding. "Today you will enter a Grade E Gate in teams of five. Your mission is simple. Survive for one hour and collect as many monster cores as possible. The team with the most cores passes the test."He looked at the students with sharp eyes. "But remember this. People die in Gates. Even Grade E Gates. If you are not ready to risk your life, leave now."No one moved."Good. I will announce the teams now."He started reading names from his tablet. Students grouped together as their names w

Baekho did not answer. The truth was, he used too much power last night. His seal weakened significantly. If he used more power now, it would weaken even further. And when the seal broke completely, everyone would remember what he really was.He was not ready for that."We do not need him," Choi Iseul said coldly. "He is weak. He has zero mana, remember? What he did last night was probably just luck.""Luck?" Moon Rael laughed bitterly. "You saw the same thing I saw. That was not luck. That was skill. Pure skill.""Whatever it was, he clearly does not want to help us. So let us figure this out ourselves."Baekho watched them argue. Part of him wanted to help. Part of him wanted to walk away and leave them to their fate. He was so tired of fighting. So tired of hiding. But then he remembered something. His little sister. Ha Chaewon. She was the only person who still remembered him completely. The only person whose memories the system could not take away. And she was sick. Very sick. Sh

Baekho opened his eyes underwater. He could not breathe. His lungs burned. He tried to swim up, but something held his leg tight. He looked down and saw it. A water spirit. Its body was made of water, but its eyes were solid and blue. It stared at him with curiosity, like a child looking at a new toy.Water spirits were Grade C monsters. They were rare and dangerous. What was one doing in a Grade E Gate?Baekho pulled out his knife and tried to cut the spirit's hand. The knife passed through water and did nothing. You could not cut water. You could not hurt water. His vision started to blur. He was running out of air.[Warning: Death imminent.][Seal release recommended.]No. He refused in his mind. It was so bright that everyone had to close their eyes. When they opened them again, Baekho looked different. His skin was paler. His eyes glowed red like burning coals. Black marks appeared on his arms, spreading like cracks in glass. The air around him felt heavy and cold."What are you?" Choi Iseul whispered in fear.Baekho did not answer. He stepped forward. The water spirits attacked him all at once, then he moved. His speed was impossible. He appeared behind the first spirit and touched it. The spirit crumbled to dust. He moved to the second spirit. He touched it and it also turned to dust. Third spirit, same thing In five seconds, ten spirits were gone. The remaining spirits realized they could not win, so they tried to run.Baekho raised his hand. Black energy sh

Baekho burst through the hospital doors thirty minutes later. He was out of breath and sweating. The receptionist barely looked up."Room 304," she said automatically. He took the stairs instead of the elevator. It was faster. Third floor. Room 304. He pushed the door open. His sister lay in the hospital bed, pale and thin. Machines beeped around her. An IV drip fed medicine into her arm. She looked like a ghost.A doctor stood next to the bed, writing on a clipboard. His name tag said Dr. Cho Kyul."You are finally here," Dr. Cho said. "We called you five times.""What happened? Is she okay?""Her condition worsened this morning. We had to give her emergency treatment. The disease is progressing faster than expected."Baekho felt his chest tighten. "How much faster?""At this rate, she has maybe two months left. Three if she is lucky.""What about the surgery? You said if we had money for the surgery, she could be cured."Dr. Cho looked uncomfortable. "The surgery costs 200 million w

"Father? It is me. I need you to investigate someone. Kim Baekho. Yes, he is a student at the academy. I want to know everything about him. Where he lives. Where he works. Who his family is. Everything."She paused and listened to her father's response."Why? Because I think he might be connected to the Incident from two years ago. The one that killed 300 people. The one that was blamed on a rampaging monster. I think the monster was not a monster at all."Another pause."Yes, I am sure. I saw his power today. It matches the descriptions from the survivors. Father, I think we found the Death Walker."The next day, Baekho did not go to the academy. Instead, he spent the day preparing for the night's job.He sharpened his knives. He checked his equipment. He ate a full meal, knowing it might be his last.At 11:30 PM, he took the subway to the old port district. This area used to be busy with shipping and trade. But after the Gates started appearing, most companies moved their operations
