51. The room next door
Hey, how are you feeling?” Xavier asked, entering the room without looking at Svetlana at all. “You look better than this morning,” Zayne joked. “I took some rest.” Xavier sat on the sofa, removing his coat. There was silence. When he set his eyes on her timid behaviour, she wasn’t looking at him. “So, did you find the person who tried to kill you?” Zayne tried to ease the tension between the two by changing the topic. “Yes,” Xavier uttered. She looked up, only to find him staring directly into her eyes, looking more grey than usual, or maybe it was just her mind playing tricks. They stayed like that until Zayne asked again. “Are you serious?” “No, but we are close.” She looked away when she heard his voice again. “Come on, man, I took the bullet. Don’t joke like that, you will make my heart stop,” Zayne said, holding his chest dramatically. “I was trying to make a joke. You
52. His to keep
Xavier had big plans already in motion in his head. He wanted her to come to him by herself. The way she came into the room with that energy and courage made him smile. As much as he was angry that she now wanted a divorce so early, when only six months were left, it made him feel something. That feeling didn’t want her to leave, so keeping her close and monitoring her would help him keep tabs on her and keep her at a safe distance. The thought of Creek’s hands on her made him angry. He wished to kill Creek, but he respected Zayne. The way she looked at him timidly made him hard. He liked her both feisty and timid; she looked so sexy. Her lips that night at the wedding, her skin in his hands. “Boss,” his man called out to him. “What?” He was a little annoyed by the fact that the man disturbed his train of thought. “We have him… the shooter,” the man stammered. Xavier was now feared by all his men. After the
53. Bound by his will
Xavier spent the whole day ordering Svetlana around, keeping her occupied without giving her a break. When it was time to go home, he left her in the office. She rushed out with her bag, thinking he had left her behind, only to find him in the car checking his watch impatiently. When she tried to get into another car, he looked at her like she was crazy. “What are you doing?” “I’m getting in the car.” “Take the other car,” he ordered. “Why? Is the seat taken?” She looked around, but no one was there, so who was he waiting for? “Yes,” a voice came from behind her. Svetlana turned to see Sofia smiling like an idiot. “I’m the one he is waiting for,” she said, smiling once more before getting in. “Excuse me,” she said, looking at the door, signalling for her to move away. Svetlana moved back, and the door slammed in her face. How dare she, Svetlana thought,
54. Dying confessions
“How are you, my son?” “I’m good, Mother. How are Lia and Father?” “They are good. Are you eating well? Lia told me about your business environment how you are busy all the time.” “I am eating well, Mother. You shouldn’t stress about that.” “I know, but Zayne got shot at his wedding, and you are his best friend. I know you are stressed, and I fear for your well-being.” “I know, Mother, but you know I’m married now and own a business. I can handle these things.” “How is Zayne doing?” “He is well.” Zayne walked in through the door without knocking, as usual. “Morning,” he smiled. “Speaking of the devil, Zayne just arrived,” Xavier said with a smile, tucking in his shirt. His phone was on the footstool in the walk-in closet. “Morning, Moth
55. One step behind
“So what’s next now?” Zayne asked Xavier when they were out of the building. “What do you want to do?” Xavier asked Zayne instead. “Travelling would be a bad idea right now. A man who is panicking makes mistakes.” “So we should leave him be for now. He has many friends; he might hide somewhere we can’t find him,” Xavier said when they got inside the car. “Yes, we need someone to lead us to him anyway—clues. I was hoping we would use that guy, but he is dead,” Zayne said. “There is someone who can lead us to him. The nurse.” “Which nurse?” “The one who bumped into me that day in the hospital. What are the chances she was the same nurse who tried to kill you?” “Maybe, but how can we be sure she has any connection to Derek?” “Thomas is looking into that. We are still tracking the number.” “What number?” Xavier told Zayne about the calls he had received when

“Move back,” Thomas said calmly, pointing the gun at her stomach. She couldn’t say a word because he would shoot her right there in the doorway. So she complied, moving back into the room and returning to the living space. “Anything else?” Derek said, looking at the window. He stood near it with his whiskey. When he got no reply, he turned around, his glass falling to the floor. “Who are you and what do you want?” Derek said. “My boss wants to talk to you,” Thomas said, giving him the phone from his pocket. On the name “Boss” was used to save the contact. Derek placed the phone to his ear. “Who are you and what do you want?” he repeated the question with attitude. Derek thought it was just some petty small gangster or mafia trying to intimidate him. “Hie Derek.” The voice alone made him freeze in fear. It was him. He had found him. Reality seemed to collapse, making his wh
57.Svetlana’s suspicions
The war had started, and Xavier was ready with his men. Some of his warehouses in America were being targeted. Svetlana didn’t need to ask what was going on with them because Xavier came home that night with a stern face. He didn’t even come for dinner, but Zayne, Thomas, and most of his trusted men were waiting for him by the door. He came back down, leaving after giving orders to Vladimir. Deep down, she wished he could share what was happening. “Vladimir, what were you discussing with your lord?” Her curiosity got the best of her as Vladimir came into the house after Xavier had driven off in the night. “My lord was asking us to call the doctor.” “Who is unwell?” she asked. “The doctor is coming to see you, mistress.” “Oh, did he say anything else?” “No, mistress.” “You can leave.” She nodded. So he didn’t say anything to Vladimir. It was either V
58. Attack on the villa
Just like Xavier had guessed, some of them had been waiting for the others to get caught or killed. They started moving in the night, blending with the trees in the middle of the dark. The villa stood tall with its lights on, lighting the way to the gate. They managed to avoid cameras and the few guards he had. Xavier had dismissed all the housemaids for the night, wanting to be alone as he worked. The men came in through the front door after checking if the coast was clear. Xavier was coming out of the shower when he saw six men enter with guns drawn. They split up, some going to other rooms to look for him. Two came upstairs while he continued dressing. When they found his room, he was already sitting on his bed with his gun loaded. The first one who kicked the door was shot in the neck. The second one started shooting in retaliation, but Xavier jumped out of the way, rolling over and taking a hit t
59. "Is she trying to seduce me..?
When she reached home, his car was there. She didn’t know what to expect had he gone somewhere else? Taking the pictures Yuri had given her, and the copies of the conversation between her previous assistant and some guy, she now knew why she had vomited that day. It had all started with the coffee she drank, but she hadn’t noticed anything amiss because she was heavily distracted. She walked into the house after putting the pictures in her bag but carried the papers. Vladimir was the first to welcome her at the door. “Good evening, Mistress.” “Good evening, Vladimir.” “The doctor is waiting for you in the study.” “Okay, thank you for informing me.” She knew it was Xavier’s doing. He could never let things go when it came to the doctor. Was it worry? Genuine concern for her? That thought alone made war
60. Her pain
He walked away from her, leaving her confused. Was all of that just in her head? Did he really just say he didn’t trust her because of what happened last time? What even happened? “Why don’t you want me to see Creek?” she yelled. Regret immediately crossed her face when Xavier stopped. His entire frame shifted, his aura turning cold. His hand didn’t even reach the doorknob anymore. She felt chills when he looked at her. Oh no, her mind screamed. Zayne isn’t here. “What do you mean?” His tone wasn’t the calm one from moments ago. “I’m sorry, I asked,” she quickly said, turning around. She thought he would leave it alone. A sudden force made her turn back. Xavier was holding her arm. He wasn’t hurting her, but the grip was firm enough to stop her completely. “No. You asked why I don’t want you to meet Creek, right?” His expression was dark again, like before.
