Xavier was twenty-six and already exhausted by his own life. The kind no amount of sleep or weekend fun could fix.

It was the slow exhaustion of knowing exactly what tomorrow looked like and hating it before it even arrived.

He stepped into the dust-filled warehouse that was filled with tall metal shelves stacked with boxes of products he would never own in his lifetime.

He adjusted his gloves and lifted a crate full of car spares, groaning as the weight nearly cracked his back.

With so many cars needing parts, the workload had been brutal this week, forcing him to work eight hours a day, spent solely on moving other people's success while his own dreams collected nothing but dust.

As he carried the parts out of the warehouse, he glanced at his co-workers, seated around a table outside, drinking coffee.

"Oh, man. Last night was a blast. That girl l met at the bar was wild." One of them said.

"Don't tell me you took her to your house?" The other added. "Man, you're a man whore!"

They laughed, having fun. Xavier watched silently....He wasn't loud.

He wasn't confident. He wasn't the guy people gathered around. He worked hard to earn enough money to take out Lenny to her dream restaurant. Lenny loved the fancy stuff .He wasn't born from a rich family they were middle class and yet, Xavier had always believed he could reach that stage one day with dedication and hard work .

He believed consistency mattered most .

As always, Xavier spent the whole day working hard. When he finally knocked off, he was tired, but that didn't stop him from thinking about his personal life.

He thought about Lenny, his girlfriend. They had been together since Highschool, and lately, he hadn't been giving her enough attention.

He took a heavy breath.

"I'll buy her flowers. Maybe we can have a movie night or something," he thought as he turned toward a small flower shop.

"She loves fancy things… hopefully she'll love these," he murmured after picking the best-looking ones among the cheapest options.

Lenny loved luxury. At one point, he even borrowed his friend's car just to impress her on a date. Even so, she had stayed with him and loved him dearly.

"Oh…" He suddenly paused, remembering his mother's words.

'Chocolates are the best way to a woman's heart.' she had said.

"Yup! I almost forgot."

He made one last detour to buy chocolates before grabbing a taxi home.

He balanced the big flower and chocolates carefully and nudged the door open with his shoulder. It wasn't locked. He frowned.

She was usually cautious.

"Lenny?" he called softly.

No answer.

The apartment was warm, dim, quiet. The bedroom lamp cast a golden glow down the hallway, soft and almost welcoming. He smiled faintly despite the fatigue pressing into his bones. Maybe she was having a relaxing bath ,tonight would feel different. Maybe she planned something sweet too .Maybe she noticed how hard things had been lately.

Maybe

He went pass the sitting room passed through the kitchen to leave the keys .Then through the hallway to their bedroom.

When l got to our bedroom door l heard a soft breathless and Intimate laugh .

Not the laugh she used with friends. Not the polite laugh she used with strangers. He pushed his ear against the door to hear more there was a man's voice ,so he opened the door quietly enough to peak in .Enough to see his brother in bed with his girlfriend .

Xavier's heart didn't break immediately It slowed.

His hearing sharpened. Just enough to hear and see everything clearly

He saw her first bare shoulders, hair falling down her back, fingers resting against someone's chest.

His brother was smirking like he belonged there.

He didn't breathe nor shout even storm in he just stood there frozen, watching the life he thought would last .

"Does he suspect anything?" Liam asked casually.

She laughed softly.

"Xavier?" Lenny said. "He's too sweet to suspect anything."

Sweet.....too sweet, too soft, too blind to see this coming.

Liam kissed her neck.

The room continued like Xavier didn't exist. He opened the door to make his presence known.

Lenny pushed Liam off and covered herself with the blanket her face full of humiliation.

"why..? was all he could utter

His chest felt hollow not shattered. Hollow. Like something essential had been removed, leaving space where emotion should be.

"you were never around Xavier you went early before l woke up and came late when l was asleep "she says

"l was looking for money to take you out "he says

"things weren't working "she says

"we can fix it please"

"She wasn't happy Xavier she chose me not you " Liam answered

"Is it true Lee" Xavier looked at her

"yes Xavier l chose him "she says

"come on get dressed and lets leave Lenny "Liam ordered her

They got dressed and Lenny came up to him

"Lenny please don't leave "he uttered one last plead

"I'm sorry Xavier goodbye "she hugged him one last time before going .

Liam came up to him when Lenny was out of view smirking.

"l always like her since l saw her for the first time now l have her to myself. You were always mother's favourite and l envied that even with my own business she loved her biological son more. You are a pathetic excuse of a man ", he said

"the dift had done its job by the time l entered the story offering company and ears. You've never been ambitious big brother women need security, direction.

You're still lifting boxes at the warehouse "with that he pushed past me after attering such bitter words .

There it was the real judgment small, replaceable and second best.

Xavier swallowed. He could punch him, scream, cry.

But the worst part? Part of him believed him.

All he was left with was emptiness in his apartment he sat on the bed processing everything that occurred.

How long had this been going on ?

All the family dinners, birthdays,Sunday lunches. Every memory suddenly felt staged rewritten and fake.

That day Xavier was betrayed by 2 people he cared about in the world .Things changed that day changing a good man to someone totally different.

Xavier stepped out of rhe bedroom his heart was pounding, he was conflicted everything seemed blurry. Someone moved in the shadows ahead, watching, waiting . A smirk appeared on his lips full of darkness.

A week had passed since the funeral. The city had swallowed the echoes of his grandfather's death, but Xavier hadn't. Every property, every account, every thread of the family empirelegal and illegal had shifted to his name. Even the girl's future was his responsibility. The weight of it was intoxicating, a power that hummed in his veins, crawling into every decision, every glance, every movement. He walked through the newly acquired office tower as though it were already his kingdom. And in a way, it was."Security protocols are incomplete," he muttered under his breath, scanning a room full of busy employees who glanced nervously at the man now sitting at the top of their hierarchy. Rushing to their posts when they saw him come in . Some whispered. Some kept silent. Some feared him outright. All obeyed. But none mattered more than her safety .She sat at the top presidential corner office, the glass walls offering a panoramic view of the city below, unaware he was watching through

  • 07. The alignment

Morning inside the villa felt artificial.Silence existed here in controlled layers climate-regulated air, softened footsteps, distant movement from staff who never spoke unless addressed. Wealth removed friction from life. It did not make it warmer. It didn’t make it human.Being a king came with enemies. Some dangerous. Some petty. Some just searching for attention to increase their fame.I stood at the window overlooking the private courtyard. The fountain ran with precise pressure, water landing in identical patterns every second.Three days ago men bled on concrete for territory measured in meters. Today marble reflected sunlight without memory of it.Power didn’t feel different only quieter. And somehow… heavier.Liam was probably hiding. Afraid. The real question was did Lenny know about his illegal trade?Or did she choose to ignore it?I stepped outside, letting the wind move through my hair. It was cold… real. Unlike everything inside.Being a millionaire felt acceptable…

  • 06. The trap closes

Three days passed quietly. Too quietly.Liam didn't suspect anything. He moved normally, laughed normally, lived normally. That was the problem. Men were most vulnerable when they believed they had already won.I watched from a parked car across the warehouse district. Night again but this time I wasn't observing blindly. This time, I was designing the outcome. My phone vibrated once.Unknown: Positions ready. It was her. I didn't reply.Headlights cut through the darkness as trucks rolled toward the docks the shipment Pakhan had spoken about. Security looked relaxed. Routine movements. Routine checks.Exactly as planned.Inside those crates were not just weapons. They were bait. And predators never recognized a trap when it smelled like opportunity.A second car pulled into the shadows across the road.Liam stepped out. Diego followed.I watched them through the windshield, unmoving. They spoke briefly before his men began moving quick and organized. They’d done this before. They tho

  • 05. The night l stopped being him

The following day l reached the industrial district but didn't enter. From a distance I studied the area, blending into the moonless night like I belonged to it. l was learning fast to adapt since l was being trained to be successful. Security cameras three facing the main gate, one covering the loading bay. Fresh tire marks on the gravel. Different cigarette brands scattered near the wall.Too many. This meeting wasn't meant for me. It wasn't even meant for Pakhan. It was meant for someone else.Maybe Diego.Maybe Liam. I stayed anyway. Thirty minutes passed before she finally arrived. Not nervous. Not cautious. Calm and collected just like yesterday. "Well… you learn fast," she said seriously, not even attempting a smile. "That will keep you alive." We stood in silence. Then the cars began to arrive one by one.The meeting started. I narrowed my eyes. Not Pakhan's men.Not police either.A third faction. We slipped in through the back; the front was heavily guarded. She

  • 04.The heiress

I reached for the contract. And that's when my phone buzzed an unknown number.A message. "Welcome to the family, Xavier." Another message followed immediately."By the way… your brother sends his regards." My blood ran cold.Who were these people that knew Liam. Before I could think further, another notification appeared. An image. It loaded slowly, And when it finally cleared my heart stopped. It was taken from outside my apartment from across the street.A zoomed-in photo of me standing by the window.Watching the rain.Another notification came from a different number ."You're being watched " l looked out the window to see movement in the opposite apartment.Xavier zoomed in on the picture again. The angle....whoever took it wanted him to notice. A slow smile crept onto his lips.“Who sent this, Pakhan…?”He leaned back in the chair, the faint glow of his laptop reflecting in his grey eyes.“Another test…?” His jaw tightened.“Or is this Liam?”The thought lingered longer than he

Rain pounded the street like a warning from the heavens. The man at the end of the alley didn’t move fast enough. My fist connected with his jaw before the words even left his mouth.Bone met bone.He crumpled against the brick wall, groaning, blood mixing with rainwater at his feet. The sound lingered longer than it should have.He had tried to rob me thought I was an easy target. He was wrong.I stood over him for a moment, chest rising slowly, rain soaking through my shirt, dripping down my face like it was trying to wash something away.It didn’t.I flexed my hand once, watching the blood mix with rain across my knuckles before turning away. The city didn’t care.Cars passed.Lights flickered.Life moved on like nothing had happened maybe that was the problem. People didn't care they minded their businesses nonchalant as ever .The apartment was quiet when I got back. The kind of silence that didn’t comfort it pressed.I dropped my keys on the table. The sound echoed slightly,
