Chapter 101
Adam kept his balance perfectly. His dense body rooted him to the ground. "Run!" Adam yelled. "Get to the archway!"Lyra and Kael scrambled forward, running as fast as they could toward the blinding white light. Adam ran right behind them, keeping his eyes on the shifting ceiling.Suddenly, a terrible, grinding sound echoed above them.GRRRRRND. CRACK.Directly above the archway, the fleshy ceiling split open. A massive, heavy door dropped down from the ceiling. But it was not a door made of wood or iron.It was a giant, solid slab of yellow bone, covered in thick red veins. It looked like a massive tooth dropping from the jaw of a monster. The bone door was incredibly thick, and it was falling fast. It was going to seal the tunnel completely.Lyra and Kael were just a few feet away from the archway. The heavy bone door was falling right toward their heads. If it hit them, it would crush them into paste."Look out!" Adam roared.Adam pushed his incredible, evolved speed to the absolut
Chapter 102
The corridor twisted sharply to the right. Adam followed the turn. The walls began to bleed. Thick, dark blood oozed out of the cracks in the black stone, dripping onto the floor."But you are not a hero," the entity hissed. The voice seemed to come from everywhere at once. "You are a predator. You belong to the dark. Why do you fight for the humans? They hate you. The Headmaster locked you in a toxic wasteland. The Inquisition wants to cut your head off. The Princess tried to use you as a medical leech."Adam stopped walking. He stared at the bleeding walls. The ancient monster was telling the truth. Every single human in power had tried to use him, destroy him, or cage him."They call you a monster," the grinding voice tempted him softly. "So be a monster. Let the gate open. Let the Void loose. Eat the walls. Eat the school. Eat the King. If you let me out, little King, we can eat the whole world together. We will never be hungry again."The temptation was incredibly strong.Adam wa
Chapter 103
The roar of the ancient god shook the white marble cavern. The sound hit Adam like a physical wave."COME DOWN AND FEED ME!" the Perfect Vessel shouted. Its massive, glowing yellow eyes stared right at Adam’s hidden ledge.Adam did not jump down. He was brave, but he was not stupid. The Perfect Vessel was filled with the pure, stolen magic of a hundred souls. It was plugged directly into the ancient monster beneath the school. If Adam jumped down into the open room, Emily would use the red strings to trap him.He needed a better angle. He needed a way to cut the umbilical cords from behind.Adam turned away from the ledge. He looked into the dark shadows behind him. There was a narrow, twisting hallway carved into the marble. It seemed to lead down toward the floor of the massive cavern. He gripped his fists tightly and ran into the hallway. He moved quickly, his boots making soft sounds on the smooth floor. The hallway twisted to the left, then to the right. The loud roaring of the
Chapter 104
Adam tried to fight back. He opened his own Gate of Hunger. He released his own dark aura, trying to push against the clone’s gravity.BOOM.The two dark auras crashed into each other in the center of the room. It was like two black holes colliding. The mirrors on the walls screamed and shattered. Thousands of glass shards flew into the air, swirling around them in a violent, deadly tornado. But Adam was losing.Adam was holding his aura back, trying to keep control. The clone had zero control. The clone’s hunger was wild and infinite. The clone’s aura began to eat Adam’s aura.Adam felt the dark violet ichor in his veins being physically pulled out through his pores. His skin burned. He fell to one knee. The gravity was crushing him flat against the floor.A bright, flashing purple screen exploded inside Adam’s mind.[SYSTEM WARNING: FATAL POWER DEFICIT.][The enemy output is 100%. The Host output is 15%.][Host is suffering critical energy drain.]The System text flashed red, then g
Chapter 105
The massive, glowing hand of the Perfect Vessel grabbed Adam’s throat. The grip was unbelievably strong. It felt like a heavy steel trap closing around his neck. Adam’s boots left the floor. He was lifted high into the air. The blinding yellow light from the monster’s eyes burned Adam’s skin. The heat was terrible. It smelled like ancient, burning stone. "FEED ME!" the ancient god roared. Adam tried to raise his hands. He tried to summon the dark Void smoke to eat the yellow light. But his arms felt incredibly heavy. Suddenly, a bright red screen flashed in front of Adam’s eyes. [CRITICAL INJURY DETECTED.][Physical body failing.][Emergency Mental Transfer Initiated.]The bright yellow light vanished. The terrible heat disappeared. The crushing grip on his throat let go. Adam hit the ground hard. He opened his eyes. He was not on the dark ledge anymore. He was not looking at the Perfect Vessel. He was back in the Mirror Room. Adam gasped for air. He looked around. The walls,
Chapter 106
The clone lunged forward. It expected a magical barrage. It expected Adam to panic and unleash the Void. It raised its hands to absorb a massive magical attack. But Adam dropped his guard completely. He let his arms fall to his sides. He relaxed his shoulders. The clone was caught totally off guard. It hesitated for a tiny fraction of a second. The clone’s magical brain could not understand why Adam was not defending himself. That single second was all Adam needed. Adam relied on pure, base physical instinct. Before he was a mage, he was a street fighter. He was a survivor who fought wild dogs for scraps of food. Adam stepped to the left, slipping past the clone’s magical hands. He did not cast a spell. He just moved his arm. Adam thrust the rusty dock-worker’s knife forward. The dull iron blade moved with incredible, brutal human speed. It slipped right past the dark smoke. The Void aura could not eat the knife because the knife had zero magic. It was just an object. CRUNCH.
Chapter 107
Adam walked slowly into the massive, dark room. It was the very center of the Blood Well. The floor was made of smooth, cold black stone. It was so quiet inside the room that Adam could hear his own breathing. The air was freezing cold on his skin. But it smelled hot. It smelled exactly like a handful of old copper pennies. It was the heavy, terrible smell of blood and dark magic. In the middle of the room stood a giant stone altar. It looked like a big table made of rough rock. The altar was not quiet. It pulsed with a sick red light. Thump. Thump. It sounded just like a giant, slow heart beating in the dark. Adam stopped walking. His dark brown eyes went very wide. He finally saw his friends."Lyra," Adam whispered. "Kael."They were hanging high in the air above the stone altar. They were trapped inside giant, see-through bags. The cocoons were translucent, like dirty glass windows. The bags were completely filled with thick, red blood. Adam could clearly see his friends float
Chapter 108
"Why do you fight for them?" Valerius asked. He walked slowly toward Adam. The red static formed a thick, buzzing shield around the noble’s body. "They are weak commoners. They do not matter. If you join me, Adam, I can give you real power. I know you have the dark Void inside you. We can rule everything together. Just stand back. Let them die. It is so easy to let go."The dark monster in Adam's brain cheered. Yes. Say yes. Let the weak die. Take the power.Adam closed his eyes for one second. He pushed the monster back down into the dark box in his soul. He turned the key. He locked it away. "No," Adam whispered softly. He opened his eyes. They were completely human and brown. "I do not want your dirty power. I want my friends."Adam charged forward again. He ran straight at the buzzing red static shield. Valerius laughed wildly. "You are a fool! The static will melt your skin right off your bones!"But Adam did not use magic to break the shield. He used his rusty, ugly iron knife
Chapter 109
The blinding white and black light faded away. For a long moment, the large stone room was perfectly silent. The heavy, sick heartbeat of the black altar was gone. The violent earthquake stopped. Adam opened his eyes. He breathed in deeply. The air was full of thick gray dust. It smelled like burnt rocks and dry ash. Adam looked at his pale hands. He was still alive. He had pushed his dark Void magic into the machine, and he had survived. He quickly looked up. The giant stone altar was completely destroyed. It was broken into hundreds of small, cracked pieces. Above the broken altar, Lyra’s heavy cocoon finally gave up. The thick material ripped wide open. The red liquid splashed loudly onto the floor. Lyra fell out of the air. Adam moved with incredible speed. He slid across the wet floor and caught Lyra gently in his arms. She was freezing cold. Her skin was very pale, and her orange hair was completely soaked in dark red liquid. But her chest moved up and down. She was breathi
Chapter 110
Adam did not dodge. He raised his left hand. He opened his palm toward the flying blade. He dug deep into his chest. He grabbed his dark Void magic. But instead of pulling the magic inward, he pushed it outward with all of his mental strength. He inverted the aura. A pitch-black, spinning spike of pure anti-magic shot out of Adam’s palm. It did not suck the air. It pierced it. The dark Void Spike hit the giant red blood blade right in the center. CRACK. The giant blood blade instantly shattered into a million pieces of harmless dry ash. The anti-magic completely destroyed the Blood Art. The Vampire Mage took a step back. Its blank face looked confused. It had never seen magic like this before. Adam did not stop. His dark brown eyes were completely calm. He felt no anger. He felt no wild rage. He was perfectly in control. Adam aimed his left hand directly at the Vampire Mage’s chest. He pushed his magic outward again. He fired a massive, invisible wave of inverted Void magic.
