191 - Fighting the Disaster
There was no warning, no roar, no threatening display. One moment it was inside the salamander's mouth, hidden as it should be.The next moment, it was already in front of Gunnar. The salamander’s tongue flew like a deadly assassin and came for Gunnar’s life.Snap~!Gunnar twisted his body. The tongue skimmed past his cheek and struck the stream behind him.The impact blasted water into the air.Gunnar’s cheek bled.Gunnar didn't wait to see what happened. He pushed off the streambed and rolled across the rocks.A sharp pain shot through his spine. His injured back nearly gave out.“Damn it!” He forced himself upright. The salamander’s tongue caught a few rocks and threw them at Gunnar. The rocks were infused with silver energy.“What?” Gunnar dodged two of them, but the third one hit him.BOOM~!The rock exploded to bits, and Gunnar felt like he was hit by a fast-moving bull. He was thrown back viciously. But Gunnar still somersaulted and landed on his feet. Gunnar’s face was covered
192 - Thoughts in Silence
Gunnar ran.He used Storm Step most of the time, but Flash Step intermittently. His legs moved almost entirely on instinct, carrying him through the dense forest while his mind struggled a bit to keep up with everything that had happened.Leaves whipped against his face, as though trying to irritate him. Roots rose from the earth like the fingers of buried corpses, trying to block his advance in their own way, and loose stones rolled beneath his feet as he descended one slope and climbed another.Everything made his escape difficult.Behind him, the forest occasionally shook with the distant movements whether it be due to the winds or the beasts moving. The salamander was forty-feet long, but Gunnar felt that it could move fast. So, he pushed himself harder, using Storm Step whenever his legs began to slow, but each burst sent another wave of pain through his injured back. His breathing grew ragged. The poison from the Thornback Lizards was still circulating through his body, his spin
193 - Earth and Water
Outside the narrow hiding place, something passed between the trees.Gunnar’s eyes flickered. “What’s that?”It appeared like a shadow. Then another shadow passed. Gunnar couldn’t see it because it moved so fast. He could hear the branches trembling in the distance.Nevertheless, Gunnar remained completely still.Outside, there were beasts roaming about. They seemed to be searching for something.Time passed, but nothing attacked him.Gunnar wasn’t surprised. Even breathing was proving difficult in this narrow space because the wind didn’t flow here. The chances of any troublesome beasts spotting him were low.“Even if they find me, I doubt any of them can fit in this narrow place,” Gunnar thought.A few more minutes passed.Gunnar was finally convinced that he had gotten the salamander off his tail. So, he allowed himself to close his eyes and rest.Sometime later.Gunnar opened his eyes. It was just getting dark.“Did I sleep throughout the whole day?”His body felt much better now.
194 - Emberheart Root
The next morning. At the western gates of the Fist clan, the two guards were yawning and were ready to end their shift.“Since the clan is expanding toward the river, are you going to build a shop or two for yourself?” one of the guards asked the other.“If I don’t, my wife will kill me,” he said. “She’s not satisfied with my salary. She said she’ll take care of the shop, so we’ll see how it goes.”“Haha, even if she’s running the shop, you’ll be bringing all the goods. That means you will have fewer hours to sleep.”“Haah, don’t even talk about it, okay? Just thinking about my future is giving me chills.”Just then, they looked to their left because they saw something move.Behind the thorny bushes, a person entered their vision. At first glance, they didn’t recognize him because he was all dirty and bloody. But as he got closer, the expressions of the guards quickly changed. “Y-Young Master Gunnar? Is that really you?”“The people are saying that you ran away to escape the wedding,”
195 - Golden Marrow Herb
Dawn had barely broken when Dahlia woke. The first thing she did was walk into her father's room.Warren hadn't moved. The sight of him lying motionless beneath the blankets had become an unpleasant part of her morning routine.Elder Cobbo was there, checking on Warren’s health.Minerva was also helping him.“Is there anything I can do?” Dahlia asked in a sad tone. Seeing her father on the bed, it squeezed her heart.“If we need you, we’ll call you, Young Lady,” Cobbo replied.Dahlia’s lips pressed together, and then she went to the backyard to brush her teeth. Her eldest brother, Lexar, was practicing his punches and kicks all by himself. Every punch made a whistling sound, snapping the air like a whip.“He seems extra motivated after losing to that Disloyal Wolf,” Dahlia muttered under her breath. She didn’t disturb her brother. After washing her face with the water in the well, she went back into the house.Just as she was about to enter the kitchen, someone entered the house.Dahl
196 - His Decision
Lexar’s eyes turned sharp. “You don’t want our father, the patriarch, to get out of the bed? Do you not remember how many herbs he fed you when you were young? He sent hunter squads to the mountain range and the warrior squads to many counties just to find rare herbs for your sake. But now, you’re thinking about sparing one herb for our father! This is ridiculous!”“Lexar! You, shut up!” Minerva raised her voice.“Mom?” Lexar frowned. “Are you supporting this little fool?”“He put his life on the line to bring that herb,” Minerva’s voice thickened. “It doesn’t matter if you, me, or the elder council wants this herb to be given to the patriarch. He needs to want to give it to the patriarch himself. But, put yourself in his shoes. How many times has he broken his elbows and wrists? You don’t remember it because you weren’t the one who tended to him every time his bones broke.”She put her hand on Gunnar’s head.“This poor son of mine suffered broken bones so many times he stopped crying
197 - Shifting Focus
Gunnar grabbed a pair of clothes and went to the bathroom in the backyard. As he bathed, he thought of the stags and the Valley of the Remains.“The Golden Marrow Herb… It probably blooms only when the deer or some other species shed their bones there. It’s already summer, so the chances of more deer shedding their antlers are low. Does that mean I’ll have to wait until next Spring to even have a chance at obtaining that herb?“By then, I should get strong enough to face the beasts like the silvertail salamander. Otherwise, going there will be too risky.”After bathing, Gunnar went to the library. He looked for books regarding the Valley of the Remains. There was no specific book allotted to that, but the books he wanted weren’t on the ground floor.Elder Shawn wasn’t around, so Gunnar went to the upper floors and found a book on Herbberg. He started reading it. The Valley of the Remains was mentioned a few times, but nothing more. The only useful information he got was one thing.“Be
198 - Pulsing of Aura
The training room was empty, so Gunnar could practice without any reservations.First, he practiced the Split Step. “This relies more on aura than the muscles in the legs, so it doesn’t give any clues to my enemies, which makes it unpredictable. But because there’s no muscle power backing the aura, you can’t move far with Split Step. Right now, I can move eight to ten feet at best.”Gunnar didn’t know that he was already moving much more distance than most people normally could using Split Foot technique. Then he moved on to the Storm Step. “This uses the whole leg, but the explosive power still comes from the foot. You generally use the whole foot at the start, but use the balls of the feet to keep going. I’ve reached the level where I can change directions without much of a problem using Storm Step.”Then he focused on learning the Spring Step.“Instead of releasing aura once into the balls of your feet, you do it multiple times at the moment your foot touches the ground,” Gunnar si
199 - Popping the Clogs
Dahlia sat cross-legged on the floor of her room, staring at the piece of Emberheart Root resting on the floor before her.The root looked a little less ordinary now that it had been broken apart. Its reddish-brown skin was rough and covered in tiny wrinkles, with faint lines running along its surface like veins. There was no dazzling glow, no overwhelming medicinal fragrance, nothing that suggested it was worth even a silver.“I don’t know what it exactly does, but Elder Cobbo said it’s a great herb, too…”She picked it up.The moment her fingers touched the inner side of it, a faint warmth seeped into her palm.Dahlia's eyebrows lifted. “So it really does contain energy.”Dahlia had never considered herself lacking in talent. Her aura control was decent. Her techniques were reliable. She had spent years training under Bessy and had rarely been scolded for wasting her aura, yet there was one thing she had never been able to overcome. It was endurance.Dahlia could fight well for a sh
200 - Measuring Stone
Dahlia went straight to the training grounds near the school. In the fist clan, there was a training tool that could test endurance. She went to the school and asked the teacher Usana who then took Dahlia to a particular house, where training related tools were all stored. In one of those rooms, there was a large stone slab with six concentric circles carved on it.This was a magic slab built with specific patterns. The Fist Clan called it the Measuring Stone. It could measure a person’s aura strike, and then the circles would glow appropriately. The innermost circle was for novices. The outermost circle was for veterans. Nobody in the fist clan had been able to make the sixth circle glow ever since this item was bought decades ago.Dahlia was here not to try and make all the circles glow. But it was to see how her aura output was varying as she pushed herself. In the fist clan, a child would finish their school when they were able to pass the Ten-Breath Trial. The point was not streng
