Everyone stopped. The aura had changed. Something was definitely wrong. “Something's wrong.” Drey muttered. He stepped past the Knight's in front. It was obvious. The wall carried their marks. They had been there waiting for them. Why did they leave? He drew out his sword. One person started the stomping, then the rest followed. They searched around for any other clues, but there was none. Flint took Lady Emerald by the hbwf and started moving. “Something's wrong. We can't just keep going.” Drey said after him, seizing her hand. “They are regrouping. Group attacks never end well.” Drey still didn't let go. “ Then she shouldn't be at the front.” “Your boys are too slow.” Flint shot back. “ Let the lady go.” His suddenly deep voice sounded like an intimidation to Drey. “Drey, let go.” Lady Emerald said. He barely held back from shifting one of Flint's teeth as he finally released her hand. “Cover!” He commanded. The knights covered in immediately, with their stances
MANA MALFUNCTIONING.
Flint was still processing what he had seen when he noticed Lady Emerald walking towards him.He forced a smile."That was a huge one back there." He caught her words at last when she stood before him. He nodded."Yes. Their bosses can be like that."He was seeing her fully for the first time. Her blue eyes, small face and sharp nose."Here." She handed him the bag she was carrying. "My father might add something but this is from me."He took it and nodded with a smile. "Thank you."Her gaze still lingered."We will be having a banquet soon. You are invited."He felt bad instantly. "I'm sorry, my lady. I won't be able to make it."She schooled the disappointment on her face. "Okay then. Goodbye."Flint watched as she got into a waiting carriage. He waved but she didn't return it. The carriage left.Drey started walking towards him."I see she settled you." He said, eyeing the bag. "Then this would be split six ways."Flint shifted the bag behind him. "She was just being appreciative.
POSSIBLE THREAT DETECTED
Flint staggered, his head hung low. He was feeling weak and strong at the same time."What's going on?" He muttered, still trying to look ahead. The system blinked again.WARNING: MANA CONTAMINATION DETECTED — MALFUNCTIONING"Fuck." He spat. The salesman noticed. "What the heck are you trying to do, boy? Run away with my stuff?"Flint barely heard him but noticed he was still holding one of the knives. The man stepped forward. "You know you can't afford it, yet you are talking about worth."Flint was exhaling through his mouth now. Sweat gathered on his forehead. He placed a hand on the table to steady himself."Mana contamination." His mind echoed. "What the fuck was that?""Boy?" He finally looked at the man, who was still glaring. "Hand over the knife. Even if they are knockoffs, you still can't afford them."Flint handed him the knife. He could feel the strength in him staying longer than before."Ever heard of mana contamination?"The man scoffed. The chaos outside was still ongo
LET THEM DRAIN
The system notification left as quickly as it came."Possible threat?" Flint thought to himself. He looked around. The whole place was quiet and serene. "What could be a threat?"He took a walk around. Nothing seemed out of place. His communicator vibrated. He took it out from his pocket. There had been tons of missed calls from Dylan. He called back immediately.Dylan answered. "You haven't forgotten about the competition, right?"Flint remembered. "Oh yes. I'm still getting some things sorted. I'll be back in two weeks.""Then you haven't heard. It's in a week. You need to get back. Apparently the demons are now taking human forms. We have to stop them before it's too late."Flint locked onto something important. "Human form. A demon could look like a human.""Yes." Dylan answered. Flint didn't know he had said it out loud."Oh okay. Thank you. I'll be back in a week then."The communicator beeped, signalling the end of the call."Things were getting worse." He thought. Then it slip
SOMETHING'S UP
The next day, Flint stood in front of the house. Nothing seemed off about it. He stared at the bounty sheet again, then back at the house. He got in with the code attached to the bounty. Again, nothing seemed off. It only looked like the house had been abandoned for a holiday. He stuffed the sheet into his pocket and started looking around. The door creaked shut. His gaze snapped to it, then to the walls. "Must have judged too fast," he thought to himself. He reached for the crystal he had stuffed in. It hadn't exploded yet.He started taking the stairs. If they weren't going to make the first move, he would. He stilled, unsure he had heard right. The door to where the sound came from was slightly open. His fists clenched tight at his sides. He stepped inside; the sound was still echoing."Human demon," he thought, gaze fixated on the wardrobe where he was sure the sound came from. The door slowly opened with the wind, and his gaze caught a child coiled inside. He looked torn, eyes re
HIS SON.
Flint was barely able to steady his breath after his back hit the wardrobe for the third time. He had thought all that was needed was to never take his attention away from the demon, but now it felt like the demon had been waiting for the boy to leave. His hand reached his throat as he was being pulled up to his feet. The invisible fists held him up until his feet were no longer touching the floor and he was gasping for breath.*I can't. I can't.* He thought as he struggled against the forces, yet all his efforts were useless.A loud sound echoed and a sharp pain shot through Flint's leg. Then he tried one last time — the demon's back met the door first before it picked him up and slammed him against it.Then it kicked in. He had been untouchable because his mana was contaminated. Just as it wanted to stand up, he locked it down on the floor, still trying to catch his breath.By the time Flint was done, green smoke emanated from the demon. He couldn't even see clearly. Remembering what
NARROW ESCAPE
They walked in and headed for the room immediately.Flint wasn't surprised that the demon was no longer there."What's your skill?" he asked."Fireball, Water Whip and Wind Strike." The man responded."Use them."The man hesitated."You must know my powers by now so don't try anything stupid." Flint added and shot him a glare.Fireballs slowly emanated from him, large enough to cover a human head."SS Mage." Flint noted. The man launched his fireballs at the wardrobe. It caught on fire and the demon emerged from it.Flint saw the man's face soften but nothing changed on the demon's. Soon enough, their feet were above the floor as they were pinned to the wall behind them.Flint struggled while the man looked like he had accepted his fate.Flint hissed. The grip started loosening. It was working. Shadows and fire emanated from him, launched at the distracted demon who was staring at the man he held captive. The man fell as the demon fell. Flint didn't stop. He pulled the demon up withou
THE DEMON SLAYER
Flint was finally able to pick himself up by the time the sun rose. He recalled everything that happened and a huge dread settled in his chest. The Demon was still alive. Still stronger than him.He got back to the guild and turned in the bounty. The woman was surprised the paper was still in order. Some men spoke to him but Flint ignored them. He found somewhere close to the wall and sat.The woman took her paper and walked to him. "Sir, did you forget to rip it? I mean…""Hand it over to someone else. It has not been done yet."She hid her shock and nodded. "Oh, okay."Lost in thought, a knock snapped him out of it.A man stood above him, looking like the one that had picked a fight with him the first time he came.Flint raised a brow. The man slid an envelope to him and left.Flint looked at the envelope. It had a seal, which meant it was from a noble. He tore it open.Flint was halfway through when he finally knew who it was from. "Emerald Wellington was her full name," he noted,
ANOTHER MATCH
"What the fuck is he thinking?" Someone asked."Does he have a death wish?""The demon slayer? Damn, they did him dirty."A thick wave of laughter rolled by."Do you need anything?" The man asked Flint. His attention was fixated on the ring but he heard him."No," he replied. The man chuckled. "You would be."Flint was about to move out when someone stepped in his face. "We have to announce you first."The man, who looked just as skinny as he was, said, holding a note and a pen. "What's your name? Or what would your name be?""Demon." Flint responded. The man hid his shock then nodded. "And what level of mage are you?""A level." The man paused then leaned closer."Are you sure you want to do this?" He whispered. "Demon Slayer is an SSS level mage. His skill and level of mana are unbelievable."Flint looked at the man. He really cared. "I don't care," he said and looked away. The man nodded.*His skill should be able to take care of that demon. And this body needs more mana. Human man
A VORDASK TEST
The whole place was quiet. The man hesitated as he reached for his communicator. "Bring in those for the third match," he whispered into it, not taking his eyes off Flint. It took a while before he got a response and he swallowed hard."Everyone backed out."Flint turned away from the crowd, especially those he had been hearing snide comments from, and all of them looked away.He left, heading for the haunted house. The fire hadn't burned it to the ground but it was very obvious that there had been a fire outbreak there.Flint stepped in past the debris. "Shall we finish this?" His voice echoed off the walls. The system blinked.[MANA LEVEL: 80%]Flint had thought it was referring to him, until his gaze caught the shadow standing not too far from him. It looked, as always, calm and deadly. In a blink, Flint was in its face and with his hands covered with rocks and debris pointed at all sides, he launched at the demon. The effect was so strong that it finally drew a growl from it.Flin
