Chapter Eleven: Second Class Citizen
"Dana!" Cole pushed his way through the crowd and parted the gathering around him, trying to reach for her. Biscuit barked at the woman who stood over Dana but the woman kicked dirt into Biscuit's face, causing the poor dog to whimper in pain. The woman—who was twice of Dana's age—wore a blue wristband which indicated she was a B class awakened as she pointed her finger down at Dana. "Did you think I wouldn't see you steal another plate of food?!" She scoffed and trampled on Dana's feet. "You should be grateful they even let your kind into this place!" Dana stood up and shoved the woman hard on her chest, sending her flying into the crowd. "Don't you ever put your hands on me!" Dana yelled at her, "If you dare come close to me or my dog again, I swear I'll kill you!" "Did you see that?! This unawakened assaulted me and threatened to kill me!" The woman glanced around the crowd for support. "You people are just the same as those bloodthirsty Greys, you think you can just—" "Get a
Chapter Twelve: New World Order
"Jesus Christ!" Dana pressed a hand to her chest as the stranger from the dark shadow startled her. "I thought you were a fucking Grey!" "My apologies." The man chuckled and clasped his hands together. "My name's Malcom, I'm an E rank survivor." he introduced himself and brought out a hand for a handshake. Cole strolled towards him and shook his hand. "I'm Cole, she's Dana and the dog's Biscuit." Malcolm nodded with a dimpled smile. "I guess you two are new," he said. "Did you come in this morning?" "Yeah," Dana replied. "Ahh, no wonder you got into a spot of bother with Bertha," He spoke with a poised British tone. "You know who she is?" "Everyone knows Bertha. She's a B ranker who gets double rations in section two but comes over to section four to ensure everyone gets one portion." "What?!" Dana exclaimed and drew the attention of nearby campers "She gets two portions per meal and she dared to call me a low class, low life thief?!" "Keep your voice down." Cole cautioned
Chapter Thirteen: Lieutenant Cole Asher
Two days passed in a whirlwind and Cole Asher had already learnt the ways of the camp. The pattern was pretty obvious. Breakfast started at 7 AM, and section one and two lines were always served first. P.A.X officers positioned themselves to separate the higher awakened survivors — S, A, B, C from the lower, enforcing the new law and order. However, by the time the unawakened survivors reach the front of the line, the best food portions were already finished and the servers begin scraping the bottom of the pots. Cole watched this happen on his first morning and nearly began a riot but Malcolm came over to warn him about the building they kept survivors who violated camp order. He wasn’t intimidated by concealed building in the slightest, but was very dissatisfied with the thought of leaving Dana alone while he’s locked in there and so, he decided to overlook the situation. - - - On the morning of day three, Cole collected his half a portion meal and found an empty spot at the
Chapter Fourteen: Contract Denied
"What did you call me?" A frigid air caught up Cole’s throat as he struggled to breathe, his vision burning dry around the edges. In three long years, he’d never been addressed by that name…. a name which weighed more than a thousand lives on his shoulders. Lieutenant? No, he was no second-in-command. He had failed. He had lost his honor to that title. "I took the privilege of investigating more about you, Lieutenant Asher." Director Hale hummed and gave a nonchalant shrug. Cole grabbed a fistful of his P.A.X jacket and pulled Director Hale closer to him, their faces inches away he could smell the coffee from his breath. "What do you think you know about me?!" Cole barked at him. Director Hale slowly pointed his index finger toward the watch tower where multiple officers stood with rifles up and ready to open fire. “One signal from me and you’d be dead Lieutenant Asher.” “Stop calling me that!” He yelled and searched the man’s face. There was no way Director Hale would know ab
Chapter Fifteen: The P.A.X Medic
While Cole was sleeping, he felt a slight pressure of a finger making a careful, quick pinch at the back of his head.“Who’s there?!” He jerked and rubbed the throbbing spot at the back of his head, his eyes sweeping across the empty tent in one fast motion. The tent was exactly how he’d left it last night, Dana was still asleep in the far corner and nothing was out of place. However, the nipping sensation on his scalp proved someone was in his room and that person had definitely touched him.Rolling off his sleeping bag, Cole ran outside the tent shirtless with his dark hair tousled, ready to take on the intruder. It was almost 6 AM, the air was freezing, the camp was barely awake and the morning sun had already begun to paint the sky in orange hues. The only people outside were survivors who couldn’t sleep or those who needed to wait in line before the long breakfast queue but Cole immediately sighted his suspect. It was a young woman walking away from his tent in long strides, he
Chapter Sixteen: Foolproof Plan
Dana laid out every detail she’d gathered from Cole and came up with a plan, swearing her idea was a hundred percent foolproof. Cole sat on a foldable chair in the corner and tried his hardest to listen to her, propping his chin in his hand but he was agitated with every second he spent under the nose of Director Hale. “We are going to give Director Hale your samples to steal; your spoons, a handkerchief, and napkins and then we wait for him to fall for the bait.” Dana said, while pacing around the tent. “And how would we know my spoon or napkin was the one taken out of the trash can?” Cole stood up restlessly and took a peek outside the tent, his eyes slowly observing his surrounding. “I have a lipstick!” Dana grinned from ear to ear and dug into the front pocket of her duffel bag. “The red lipstick stain will be a subtle indicator for every item you use today.” Cole turned around and quirked a brow at her. "You carry a lipstick?" "I carry what I need." She shrugged, stil
Chapter Seventeen: Falling for the Bait
Cole wasn’t prepared for the softness of Dana’s moist lips as she stood on her toes and kissed him with her eyes closed, her torso gently pressed against his.Cole stood here awkwardly with his arms by his side, his eyes glimpsing around the camp as people stared at them.“Don’t worry, I will make sure your camp girlfriend knows you’re single.” Dana pulled away and used her index finger to even out the faint lipstick on his lips.“I don’t have a camp girlfriend.” Cole turned aside and walked toward the cafeteria, queuing in the Unawakened line.“That’s not the impression I got between you and the blonde P.A.X medic.” Dana said from behind him.“She works with Director Hale, which makes her my enemy.” The servers marked their food vouchers and dished their breakfast—scrambled eggs and a blob of mashed potatoes.“There goes our unemployed law enforcer.” Dana snorted as she saw Bertha the B ranker, coordinating the Unawakened food line.“One portion per person!” Bertha yelled as a server
Chapter Eighteen: Mission Plan Two
Cole hands moved with intensity as he folded their blankets, rolled them tight, and strapped it to the outside of Dana’s duffel bag. They hadn’t come with much and in a good minute under quiet pressure, Cole had packed everything they brought and needed.Putting on his jacket, he began zipping up the duffel when Dana came in through the tent flap. Malcolm walked in behind her and Cole straightened up to looked at him as he stood in the entrance of the tent, his fidgeting hands steepled in front of him."Da—Dana told me everything," Malcolm croaked, his voice barely audible.Everything? Cole thought to himself.Dana was only meant to tell Malcolm they were leaving, not to spill every information about Director Hale and P.A.X to him.Cole glared at her and Dana purposely glanced all over the tent to avoid his gaze, "He needed to know," she muttered, defending herself. "And you need to hear what he has to say."Cole turned to Malcolm. "How much did she tell you?""I know you’re not Unaw
Chapter Nineteen: The Infected Survivor I
Every person in camp stopped what they were doing at the sound of the explosive gunshots. P.A.X officers hollered in the far distance, their boots stomping on gravel as they marched urgently toward the main gate. Dana pressed Biscuit against her chest and clutched Malcolm’s hand. “What the hell was that?!” Her eyes widened in fear. Cole dropped the duffel bag and hurried to the tent entrance before the echo of the third shot faded, his eyes combing the scene as P.A.X officers converged from every possible direction with their rifles up. Chaos spread across the camp as survivors ran out their tents, the section lines dissolving into a crowd. "Stay here," Cole said to Dana and Malcolm, and ran out the tent before either of them could protest. The camp erupted into two movements as survivors pressed away from the main gate while the officers pressed forward into the commotion. “Run!” A survivor screamed and fell to the ground while running. “Hide in your tents!” Anoth
Chapter Twenty: The Infected Survivor II
“NO!” Cole sprinted across the open camp ground, and closed the gap between him and the infected survivor. He slammed his shoulder into the man and they fell down together in the dirt, the bullets cutting through the air where they had been standing. The knife in the man’s grip swung away and the little girl broke free and made a brisk run for it toward her mother's arms. “Piper!” Her mother shrugged off the P.A.X officers at her sides and embraced her daughter, hauling her into the crowd for safety. Cole rolled off the man and came up on one knee breathing heavily. “I don’t want to fight you. I just needed you to let her go.” He said. The man chuckled and got up slowly, wiping black blood from his lips with the back of his hand. “Fool!” He sneered with blackened teeth. The infection had now spread to his neck, dark veins branching above his collar as his skin turned sickly grey, his eyes gradually losing their color. "You think you're a hero?!" He picked up his knife and
