Chapter Twenty One: The Infected Survivor III
“Shit!” Cole winced in pain and clutched his jacket sleeve against the open wound, feeling the warm, red blood trickle down his forearm to his fingertips. The man grinned in satisfaction and an inhumane growl came out his mouth as he twisted the knife in his hand. “Cole, get away from him!” Dana pushed through the blockade of P.A.X officers, running to Cole and stood next to him. “My God, you’re bleeding.” She gasped at the horrid sight and covered her mouth in shock. “Awn, so cute.” The man rasped and chocked on his own black blood. “Now… I get to kill two of you!” He scowled and pounced at Dana. Before Dana could react, Cole took a hold of his wrist and crushed his fingers, twisting the knife out his hand while Dana quickly kicked it out of reach. “Touch her and I’ll make hell a resting place for your soul.” Cole gripped the man’s neck tightly, lifting his feet off the ground. “Mr. Asher, release the infected man immediately.” Director Hale said as the man struggled to
Chapter Twenty Two: Nowhere to Run
Everyone had witnessed the Grey infected man come back to humanity in sixty seconds and Director Hale stood in the aftermath with his hands clasped behind his back."Mr. Asher." He gestured toward the white tent with an open hand. "I think it's time we spoke privately and get this—"His remaining statement lodged behind his throat as Cole grabbed Dana’s hand and sprinted toward the Unawakened tents in section four.“Go after them!” Director Hale ordered his officers and the armed men pursed on foot. They bustled through the crowd fast, Cole leading and Dana keeping pace behind him.The swarm of survivors parted way for them, not out of reverence but due to confusion as they stood there dumbfounded.Dana and Cole reached section four and entered into their tent. “Dana, quick. We need to leave now.” Cole breathed heavily, his heart racing as he ripped clean a piece of cloth and bandaged his bleeding forearm.Malcolm rushed inside the tent with Biscuit in his arms. “Director Hale is com
Chapter Twenty Three: Property of P.A.X
A white blinding light distorted Cole’s vision as his bloodshot eyes fluttered open and a sharp headache pierced into the back of his skull. The air around him was different. It was flat, filtered and stripped of everything that felt natural. He tried to sit up but the leather restraints buckled at his wrist and across his chest, strapped him down to the laboratory table. “Dana.” He called out and pulled at both wrists with full strength but the solid table beneath him bolted indifferently to his straining efforts. “Who’s there?!” Cole yelled and glanced side-to-side to make out his surrounding. He was locked up in a laboratory as the space smelled like chemicals and antiseptics. He saw bloody surgical instruments scattered on a metal tray, an oxygen tank to his right and a monitor on his left that read his vitals. There were no windows as all four corners of the room was sealed off with white panels. "Cole." Dana's muffled voice came from his left. “I can’t breathe, Cole.” She
Chapter Twenty Four: Savior of the World
Cole’s words barely settled in the moment before the titanium doors slid open and the female P.A.X medic strolled into the laboratory. Cole recognized her immediately and Dana scoffed, “Yay, it’s your girlfriend.” Sarcasm dripped off every syllable as she rolled her eyes. The P.A.X medic had her blonde hair tied back, her transparent medical glasses resting on her freckled nose and her former P.A.X medic coat was replaced by a white lab coat. She carried a tablet and walked with the same head straight efficiency she'd used to walk away from his tent and the trash can. Standing at a professional distance from Cole, she glanced at his bandaged forearm, which was visible below the leather strap. "Mr. Asher." Her voice was tinier than he expected. "My name is Talia. I'm the lead medical researcher on the V-1 Response Initiative." She set the tablet on a counter. "I know this isn't the circumstance either of us wanted but I have to be straightforward with you about the procedures
Chapter Twenty Five: Test Subject
The doors opened again at exactly two hours. Director Hale and Talia walked in and her electric blue eyes took a quick sweep at Cole. Trailing behind them, three more scientists spread into the laboratory and one of them checked Cole's vitals on the monitor. Director Hale clasped his hands behind his back and surveyed the lab with satisfaction. "Mr. Asher." He looked at Cole on the table. "I trust you rested well?" “We’d hoped you rest well in hell forever," Dana spoke through the glass. Director Hale gave her a side-eye, then turned back to Cole. "We shall begin the first phase by taking tissue samples from the wound site. After, we shall begin the blood collection. You won't feel most of it." "He will feel all of it," Talia corrected, putting on a pair of sterile gloves. "We won't be administering any local anesthetic for the tissue collection cause we don't want the medication interfering with the makeup of the compound in your blood." "Dr. Talia, his vitals are stabl
Chapter Twenty Six: Under the Fence
Dana couldn't sleep. She was thinking about life before the apocalypse whilst sitting in the dark, her back against the wall of the glass chamber, watching the rise and fall of Cole's chest. Quiet footsteps approached the laboratory and the titanium doors slid open, revealing a P.A.X officer in a full armor gear holding a black bag. They moved into the laboratory without switching the lights on, using the dim emergency strip along the floor to navigate toward Dana’s chamber. Dana scampered to her feet and the P.A.X officer stopped at her glass chamber, reached up and took off their helmet. "Hello," Malcolm said and Dana gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. "Apologies for the dramatic entrance." He held up the keycard. "I nicked this off an officer guarding the building and I’ll admit, it was considerably way easier than I anticipated." He slid the card through the chamber lock and the glass door released. "Shall we?" Dana ran out and threw her arms around Malcol
Chapter Twenty Seven: Midnight Run
Dana face-planted into the dust and her chest hit the ground with a thud. "ARGHH!" She cried and reached for the excruciating pain exploding in her lower abdomen. Cole turned back and got on his knees immediately. "Dana!" He rolled her over and found the gunshot wound fast. His stomach twisted as he saw the P.A.X uniform soak dark and wet below her ribs, where the bullet had gone in."Dana, look at me." He got his arm underneath her shoulder and sat her up.Dana looked at him, her jaw was locked tight and her breathing was shallow and rapid. "Is–Is it bad?" Her hand pressed against the wound, trying to hold herself together."No, no, it’s alright, okay? You will be fine," Cole reassured her despite the way his hands trembled as he picked her up. "You will be okay." The alarms continued blaring as floodlights flashed across the outside perimeter to detect them but Cole ran with Dana in his arms and Biscuit still strapped to her back. His feet treaded forward in the darkness, searchi
Chapter Twenty Eight: Can of Beans
Cole didn't know when he fell asleep. One moment he was embracing a cold and lifeless Dana and the next morning, tiny beams of sunlight seeped through the roof and shone on his face. He sat up and looked around the shop but the space where Dana laid was empty. "What?" He jumped to his feet before the thought completed.“Dana?” Cole's brows furrowed as he scanned the corners but still no sight of Dana or Biscuit or the bag she'd been carrying. Was he dreaming about last night? Did he escape camp without Dana? Could P.A.X have found them and taken her body away? Cole looked at his hands and stared at dried blood cracked at his palms and knuckles.“So, it wasn’t a dream?” He muttered to himself and heard jagged footsteps sauntering towards the shop.Cole trudged out the shop and into the Grey zone, covering his eyes against the morning light with his palm.Amidst the Grey miasma, Dana limped down the empty street with the wound compress still visible beneath her P.A.X uniform. In one
Chapter Twenty Nine: No Signal
When the first wave wiped out 40% of the world’s population, it gave no warning. The humans didn’t get bitten, but they got infected by simply inhaling the putrid Grey’s air and Cole pondered if his blood could stand a chance against the second wave.Or maybe… he’d randomly wake up one day and see Dana turning into a bloodthirsty creature.“Hellooo, earth to Cole,” Dana waved a hand in his face as he’d spaced out in his thoughts. “What were you thinking about?” “Nothing.” Cole lied. “I’m just a bit tired.”“Well, it’s time to stitch me up.” Dana picked up the suture kit and handed it over to him.Cole arranged the items and donned on his gloves, working carefully in full concentration. The wound was clean without fragments of bullets and luckily the bleeding had slowed significantly.Dana held completely still, breathing through her nostrils as Cole closed together the edges of the wound."All done," He said, tying off the last sutures and applying the bandage strip."Thank God." Da
Chapter Thirty: Old Friend
The afternoon sun was unbearable. Even after the Grey Plague took everything alive— the people, the air, the smell of a city—the scorching sun stayed relentless. Underneath Cole's P.A.X uniform the heat smite his skin as the fabric was designed for people who had access to climate-controlled facilities. For Dana, it certainly wasn’t the best option for traveling through a dead city in with a bullet wound in her abdomen and no water since dawn. “I’m gonna have to drink piss if I don’t get water to drink soon.” Dana groaned for the hundredth time in an hour. "Look… over there," Cole pointed at a grocery store half a block ahead. “ The front windows were still intact, the door were pushed in rather than broken, and Cole guessed the threat level inside was probably low. "We need to survey.” Cole tried to check around the block but Dana grabbed his jacket and stopped him. “Water first," She said. "You can’t run or fight and I don’t want a Grey to attack us by surprise.” Cole said.
