"What happens when you need something and you come to me and remind me that you helped when nobody else would."Edward leaned forward."I am going to tell you the one rule that governs everything this foundation does," he said. "No beneficiary will ever be asked to repay us through loyalty. Not today. Not next year. Not in a decade.""How can you guarantee that.""Because the rule is written into the foundation's charter. It cannot be changed without the unanimous consent of every trustee, and none of them answer to me." Edward looked at her. "You are not borrowing a favor. You are receiving what should have been given to you years ago."She stared at him for a long time. Then she nodded once. The principle spread.Within a month, every beneficiary who walked through the foundation's doors was told the same thing. Every lawyer, every doctor, every grant administrator repeated it the same way.No repayment through loyalty. The words became the foundation's identity. Its defining rule.
