Chapter one: Saving dying daughter
The ICU unit smelled of antiseptic, strained life and the static consistent beat of the monitor.Benjamin stared at her daughter under white sheet with an aching heart, an oxygen mask over her head supporting breath she was losing fast because bone marrow infection was taking over.Aria's eyes flicked open. "Daddy...where is mummy?" Her voice came small, exhaustion palpable. The question cut something vital inside his chest. He forced a smile that appeared too thin to be genuine and sat beside her bed, carefully taking her arm in his palm."Mummy is coming." He said with a gentle voice. "She's on her way, baby." He gave out an assuring smile. But the moment Benjamin looked away from Aria, his smile was gone, replaced with worry."Where are you, Hannah." He whispered with a trembling voice, the weight of the situation pressing him to a corner where he only relied on hope and assurance. "Your daughter needs you." Minutes later, Dr. Chad walked in with a medical report that would shatte
Chapter two: Young Master Hayes
Benjamin sprinted through a quiet alley, seconds counting down in his head, his heart pounding along with the monitor beep in ICU where Aria was fighting for her life.Less than an hour. "Hold on, baby. Hold on. I'll be there." His voice trembled. He clutched the briefcase to his chest like it was his lifeline— of course— his daughter's. "Dad is coming. Suddenly, two masked men appeared at the end of the hallway. One held a knife catching the afternoon sun and scattering it across like a promise of blood, the other tapped a baton gently on his palm, his posture relaxed, typical of someone who knew how to stir fear with a weapon. Benjamin's heart raced. His grip tightened on the briefcase. Slowly, he retreated. "Who are you people? What do you want?" "Good question." The one holding the knife said, his voice muffled under black mask. He waved the knife at the briefcase. "Hand over the money. Now." "What—" Benjamin gasped, his heart racing. Losing the briefcase equalized losing
Chapter three: The divorce
Benjamin paused and turned back to meet Jackson Voss's gaze. "Grandfather Amos Hayes is dead." Jackson delivered like news bulletin headlines. Without asking, he continued. "He died last night. He made me promise him that I will find you wherever it takes." He paused. "He apologized for everything he'd done, for neglecting his responsibility justifying anger against protecting his son and grandson while putting them at risk." Before Jackson continued, he produced the Velvet Box again. "He asked me to hand this over to you," He stretched the box out to him. "Everything you need to know is inside." "I need to see my daughter." Benjamin said impatiently with the voice of someone who knew priority. Inside the Premium ward was a far cry from the regular ward: Cutting-edge machines and everything that suggested wealth transformed for survival. Aria laid on the bed, his eyes flushing with colour looking different in the way that lifted his spirit. Her innocent, delicate and soft s
Chapter four: Trillionaire heir
What!" Hannah gasped, her expression cracking in genuine shock. Then an ugly laughter broke out from her lips, a crackle at d child throwing tantrums "Divorce?" She chuckled, her expression shifting from the divorce paper to Benjamin. "You're joking, Ben? Huh?" Benjamin's expression was indifferent now. "Sign it, Hannah." He simply said. "I'm done. Done with this marriage." Hannah snatched the envelope from the table and tore it open. Her expression completely crumbled seeing the bold heading: DIVORCE AGREEMENT that looked like a cruel joke. Her eyes darted to the bottom to see Benjamin's paper carefully scribbled there. Her laughter was an ugly hysterical thing rattling Condominium fittings. She waved the paper like it was trash. "This— it doesn't suit you, Ben. You're nothing without me." Her voice rose to a shriek. Her pride wavered because she hadn't expected Benjamin to make the move. "You're angry because I got busy? and you couldn't handle petty responsibility?" Benjam
Chapter five: Velvet Ember restaurant
Jackson nodded. "Yes, Master." "Go join them at the Hayes family house to follow the announcement," Benjamin said. "and tell me everything that happens there. Also I need compilation of my grandfather's inheritance."Jackson nodded. "The documents will be handed over to me by the lawyer as soon as the inheritance is announced. I'll send the list of your new estates."Benjamin nodded. A guard opened the door and he stepped down with Aria in front of Velvet Ember, one of the most expensive places in the city to enjoy time, a place where Benjamin couldn't afford in the past because one plate there would consume his six month salary. The place wasn't overrated. It was the same jaw dropping decors he'd seen in Ads before. Polished surfaces, crystal chandeliers scattering lights over patrons in different designer clothes and staff members in crisp white uniforms moving through the space serving patrons and welcoming others with a practiced smile.Cutleries clinked gently, conversation mi
Chapter six: The confrontation
Let her go,” Benjamin's voice was calm and conversational. "I'll pay. Margaret turned, tossing her hair behind her back to look at the intruder. Her expression paused, surprise flickering in her eyes. "Benjamin?" "Hannah's useless husband?" Her lips twisted in mock amusement. "What are you doing in this place?" Benjamin was also slightly surprised to see her but his expression stayed calm. Margaret is one of Hannah's friends in the industry who detested him like everyone else. "It's Benjamin. Preferably Mr. Hayes." He corrected with a firm voice. Cassandra stood at the side, quietly staring between Benjamin and Margaret. Margaret blurted out a laughter that sounded like glass breaking. "Mr. Hayes, huh?....what are you doing in a place like this?" Her voice dripped with mock sarcasm. "Hannah sent you on an errand? Because that is the only thing you're ever useful for. She really deserves better than an errand boy but she's not listening. She deserves a man like Richard Carlson
Chapter seven: Show off
Meanwhile in another restaurant which was no different from Velvet Ember where crystal chandeliers flaunt rainbow over patrons and expensive dishes, Hannah and three of her friends sat around a table nestled with expensive desserts and wines. Each of them wore designer outfits that seemed to compete for the costliest. Amara, dressed in the latest Fendi gown leaned forward, an intricate silver strap watch with authentic sapphire crystal as the centre piece catching the light on her wrist. She wriggled her hand as she flaunted it. "Ladies. Guess who gave me the latest Sapphire Crystal watch for my birthday gift. Custom label. $1 million dollars. Imported from Geneva." She said with flourish that overrated designer watch. She paused for effect that came with impressive nods from people accustomed with wealth. "Mr. Johnson. Chairman of X Enterprise. My new man. He's spoiling me." "I'm happy for you, Amara." Lizzy said. She was dressed in a silk burgundy gown embroidered with diamond s
Chapter eight: How dare he!
Hannah shifted on her seat, wine glass froze in her hand. "Benjamin? What did he do?" "He's hooking up with another woman Hannah!" Margaret screamed, vein bulging on her temple. "With your money. He's showing off with cloth you bought him.You need to stop feeding that trash man, he's getting arrogant and he's going to ruin your public reputation. He insulted me! He attacked me! "Benjamin?" Hannah repeated with a mix of surprise and more confusion. "You heard me, Hannah." Margaret blurted, anger radiating off her. Hannah was confused, bordered between believing a friend’s narration or believing that the man she'd married for four years attacked a woman first. Four years in the marriage, Benjamin had never raised his voice at her at any point, he'd never spoken to her with a harsh tone even. "Benjamin can be anything— call him any names you like but attack a woman?" She shook her head in firm disapproval. "Relax Margaret," Lizzy chipped in calmly, eyes steady on Margaret who w
Chapter nine: Aria asked strange woman to the table
Back at Velvet Ember, Benjamin Pocket his phone immediately he dropped Hannah's call and turned his gaze to meet the young woman at the back. Cassandra. She is tall, elegant in the way beautiful alone couldn't describe— Soft dark hair curled behind her back, white impeccable blazer that fitted her curves without tightening. For some seconds, Benjamin stared at her, taking in her striking features but he didn't linger on her. Cassandra's finger clasped in front of her pants, head slightly tilted down, her cheek flushed in embarrassment from the earlier exchange. "Thank you, Sir," She said, her voice small. "I will pay you bac—" "It's not necessary." Benjamin cut through her words gently. "and it wasn't your fault. She should have focused on the way instead of scrolling through her phone." Cassandra lifted her head gently, her beauty striking despite the sadness in her expression. "I thought no one saw it. I thought I was the one who was wrong. Always wrong." She said with a somb
Chapter ten: Daddy will be lonely
The order arrived plated inside expensive ceramics— three plates carefully arranged on a silver tray with orange juice set beside it with three glass cups. "Enjoy your meal, Sir, Ma." The waitress bowed gently as she set the tray down with a professional smile. "Thank you." Benjamin uncovered Aria's plate. Steam curled into the air, the aroma of the seasoned jollof rice filling the air around them quickly and spreading around them. "Wow.." Aria gasped, her small eyes widening in astonishment. "The chicken is bigger than my head." Benjamin and Cassandra laughed, excitement filling the air as they leaned into the table to eat. Benjamin didn't start eating immediately, staring at Cassandra's phone that was still vibrating on the table with notification she'd been ignoring. "Won't you like to attend to that?" He nodded at the phone. "It's not really important." She said without looking at the phone, picking up a spoon to commence eating. "Your husband?" Benjamin asked, uncoveri
