Chapter 11
Apparently, Arthur could easily discern that the Elvic guy truly had some abilities. The ability to charm ladies and walk out, leaving the atmosphere behind him stripped of their money. That guy was something. Not just anything; he might actually possess something that spiritually stripped shops and stores of their coins.Arthur already suspected this Elvic guy. Voicing his observations to the inhabitants of Sysia might be foolish. It might seem foolish right until Elvic walked into their homes or stores and somehow left them lighter of their coins. But Arthur found no reason to tell this to anyone. He did not blame Elvic for stealing with his tricks. Anyone could be a thief. Sooner or later, Elvic would have to answer for his punishable acts when caught. As Arthur walked toward their home, a patch of land slightly isolated from the others, his eyes caught the herdsman sipping from his wooden cup. Thin curls of steam drifted upward into the cooling evening air. It was clear that this

Arthur didn't know why Devic's words had frozen him where he sat. There was something deeply unsettling about them, something that crawled beneath the skin and lingered there. However, this was the first time he was witnessing tiny fragments of truth hidden within what Gad had written in that letter. People genuinely hated wizards because they believed wizards orchestrated evil throughout the world. And Arthur couldn't entirely blame such accusations. Wizards could be dangerous people themselves.“So you mean the priests fetch the wizards out?” Arthur asked.Devic nodded. “The priests always say there are still some wizards out there performing forbidden rituals just to make themselves stronger. And the incubus or other demons are their agents. Last year, a man in Sysia was named a wizard because he healed a woman miraculously. He was killed by the king's subjects before he could even be taken to the palace,” Devic narrated.“But you said he healed a woman. Why did they kill him?”
Chapter 13
In Sysia, this was how witches and wizards were caught. Generally, witches were not feared as much, but wizards were considered malevolent.Wizards were believed to be sinister and brutal beings, and very little could stop a powerful one when it decided to unleash its wrath upon a place.Although Arthur forced himself not to think too much about this incubus called Elvic, he was deeply afraid of being caught. Yet Elvic kept watching him and smiling as though nothing was wrong.Arthur believed one thing: if he was going to be exposed here as a wizard, then Elvic, who was also hiding behind a masquerade, ought to be caught as well. Neither of them should escape this."And now, let's all kneel!" the aged man in the long garment cried, raising a large pot containing something Arthur couldn't identify.Everyone dropped to their knees and, fortunately, Arthur could still see clearly from where he was positioned at the back. He had grown considerably taller since turning seventeen, so peerin

Arthur braced himself for pain. The moment the strange broth entered his mouth, he expected agony. He expected a searing sensation that would burn through his tongue, descend into his throat, and consume his insides. He expected to scream. He expected to collapse before everyone. But nothing happened. Absolutely nothing. Arthur blinked twice. The broth settled warmly inside him with no single reaction. Then his eyes widened. It was delicious. Not merely good. It tasted incredible. The vegetables were tender, the meat soft and rich, while the broth itself carried a sweetness unlike anything he had tasted before. It was warm and comforting, spreading through his body like gentle sunlight after a cold morning.Arthur stared at the bowl. Was this truly the same potion everyone feared? He cautiously took another mouthful. Again, no pain came. Instead, the wonderful taste deepened. Before he realized it, he was eating faster. Another spoonful. Then another, and another. The smoke still burs

Hearts could jerk to either two things; excitement or dread. It should be generally agreed that the latter was quite unfavourable. Unfavourable in the sense that it could steal away one's reasoning and replace it with vulnerability.Arthur experienced this sort of dread. Upon arriving within the priests' walls, the true meaning of insecurity settled heavily inside his chest. The structure was built from the strongest wood he had ever seen while gigantic stones stacked upon one another formed the outer fence. The walls looked less like a home and more like a place built to keep dangerous things from escaping.Elvic merely showed the dread Arthur was feeling and it couldn't be argued that the performer wasn't afraid. In fact, Elvic often gave Arthur reassuring looks as though everything would somehow be fine.Arthur himself knew that if he wanted to stand on the smart side of things, all was certainly not fine. Elvic hardly knew he was a wizard. A real wizard from a generation of wiza

"What possibly is your mission with that door?" Father Gath enquired as they both walked the endless stone way.Arthur looked at Gath, likely stole a glance at his taller frame, then he swallowed hard."I think I heard a disturbing racket in there," Arthur said.Father Gath glanced down from his shoulders with a stoic gaze. "A disturbing racket? That's a new one. Define it.""Like something running all over the room and scattering things, Father."Father Gath glanced from his shoulder again. "Things like that should be easy to ignore... what's your name?""Jack, Father."Arthur lied although he couldn't tell why he had been using many names lately. Earlier, he had used Tye, maybe he needed to stick with this particular name now."Alright. So, speak to me Jack, because I find it hard to accept your term—disturbing racket. What really led you to that door?" Father Gath demanded as he clasped his hands behind him.Arthur hesitated. He didn't know why he dreaded telling the priest that he

Returning back to his ward, Arthur fully accepted things were not going to be easy. He needed to leave here. At the very least, he needed to find a way beyond these walls and retrieve his book before attempting any escape. The longer he remained under the priests' watchful eyes, the greater the chance of being exposed.Concerning the escape itself, there was a strong intuition that it would not be something easily attained. Too many flaws could emerge from such a plan. Someone could notice his absence. Someone could follow him. Worse still, someone might already be expecting him to try.Even thinking about escape felt like something that needed caution. Arthur knew very little of the world hidden beneath ordinary appearances. There could be powers at work here that he neither understood nor perceived. Apart from that, priests themselves surely possessed limitations just as performers supposedly did. Yet limitations alone did not make them harmless.Arthur had not been able to ask

Arthur could bet on it that Elvic possessed the platinum face-card. And somehow, that same handsomeness made all the women pause this way. The fellow was treated like some god of beauty descended from the heavens. As Elvic walked into the midst of the ladies, clearly unwilling to fetch water from where the disciples were gathering theirs, the women immediately offered assistance."Please, my lord, we shall help you fill your carriage."One beautiful woman spoke while two others hurriedly took the containers from Elvic's hands."But you needn't trouble yourselves. I can carry them myself."Elvic attempted to protest like a gentleman. The same woman pressed on with confidence."We are aware of that, my lord. We only insist. Please remain by the bank so your boots do not get wet."From his place in the river, Arthur watched Elvic glance between them in mild surprise. Arthur himself found the entire scene astonishing. Elvic's gift appeared to earn him support wherever he went. In some st

It was at the same moment Edward and Alaric burst back from the water and regained their footing. Both disciples immediately sniffed the backs of their hands again, their eyes reddening with each breath they drew.Arthur and the remaining disciples instinctively stepped away from them. They smelled terrible. To Arthur at least. Edward's and Alaric's scent reminded him of Horiah, the dreadful man who had torn his father's heart from his chest.Arthur could perceive their spiritual smell perfectly.Obviously, they smelled this way because of that Clarity Powder they kept inhaling. If a substance could alter a person's spiritual scent so greatly, then perhaps the powder was far more abysmal than Arthur originally thought. As the enraged disciples attempted to charge at Elvic once more, Arthur suddenly noticed something.Elvic's eyes glinted amber.Only for a second. The moment it happened, Edward's and Alaric's belts loosened.Their trousers slipped downward. Both men stumbled forward

"Yes sir, I cannot deny that. Me and my friend, Jack, are performers." Arthur immediately wondered how Elvic seemed to know that name. He had never spoken it to anyone except Father Gath on the day the priest questioned him. Did that mean Elvic had somehow been spying on them? Somehow, it explained the confidence the performer carried everywhere he went. Elvic often behaved like a man who already knew things before others spoke them aloud. "A performer who women often swarm, who controls wind and people's belts?" Father Stone asked this time. Arthur saw Elvic glance toward Edward and Alaric. The two disciples were not smiling. They sat stiffly with disgust written across their faces. In all honesty, Arthur was interested in the question too. Edward and his close friend had witnessed the strange occurrence by the river. Arthur himself had witnessed it. Whether Elvic admitted it or not, something unusual had happened there. Elvic smirked before slowly licking his lower lip
