Chapter 21
Arthur adjusted his neck-tie to breathe more freely. Despite the cold temperature of the night, he was feeling some kind of heat listening to this. The woman's voice rose and fell beyond the door while another sound occasionally followed whenever she drew a sharp breath. Beneath it all, the low groan of an aged man could be heard from time to time. Arthur would never argue that the voice did not belong to Father Stone. He had listened to that priest speak often enough during prayers, punishments and sermons. There was simply no mistaking it.Inside that room was something Arthur had learned people called sin. The sin of the flesh. He was eighteen years old. He understood enough about the world to know what such sounds usually meant, and yet his confusion remained greater than his embarrassment. The priests spent their days preaching discipline, purity and sacrifice. Their disciples followed them with almost religious devotion. Yet one of those same priests was hidden behind a lock
Chapter 22
"Penioscos Resunik Aristhos," Arthur muttered beneath his breath just as the door burst open. How the spell escaped his lips was surprising enough to unsettle him. He had not planned on using it. In truth, he was not even certain it would work. This was the spell his father had taught him before his death, and everything concerning it had emphasized preparation, concentration, and caution. Yet in that desperate moment, with danger rushing toward him, the words had simply surfaced from memory and leapt from his tongue. The horned woman emerged into the corridor almost immediately. For the first time, Arthur had a proper view of her. The sight nearly made him recoil. Her skin was red—not merely touched by red light but genuinely red, as though blood itself flowed upon the surface of her body. Or maybe it's really a costume. Two curved horns rose proudly from her head, while her eyes glowed with an amber brilliance. The spiritual scent surrounding her was even worse. Arthur's n

Arthur took his time to equally stare back at Elvic. He ensured he showed no fear, even if Elvic looked like someone who deserved to be feared. This wasn't the first time Elvic was looking at him in this manner. Back at King Erunai's palace, this was the same expression the performer wore. It was difficult to know—maybe it was admiration or something else entirely.Their eye contact stretched so long that Arthur wished he could take his eyes off. But he fought back the urge. He wanted to know what Elvic was trying to look at or trying to say.A few seconds passed, and then a smile cornered Elvic's lips. It was a little surprising. His white row of teeth glimmered as he brushed his long hair from his face.Arthur found himself returning the smile just to feel eased by the situation. He watched as Elvic winked at him and somehow gestured for him to close his eyes or get caught by the priests. It was an advisable move to hearken to Elvic's words, so Arthur obeyed. He shut his eyes slowly
Chapter 24
Suddenly, Devic lunged at Arthur, pinning him down. The aged man didn't allow him to go at all; he tightened his grip as if his life depended on it.“You ghost! How dare you haunt my home?! You shouldn't be here.” Devic rasped. There was one thing that seemed to be lost in Devic's expression. Not his aggressiveness; that had always been present. It was something else entirely. Arthur really didn't care about being restrained; he was a little concerned as to why Devic chose to call him a ghost instead of a bastard.“Speak, you demon! I rebuke you in the name of the Lord!”There was little reason to actually watch Devic display his behavioural patterns. It was… totally amusing. Arthur believed the aged man was so good at theatrics that he ought to be performing some kind of court masque or something. Because dancing in royal courts could perhaps earn him more money than his fishing.“I said speak, you demon!” Devic yelled again.“Do you really want to say demon or bastard? I'm kind of c

Muttering that spell ought to have been followed by its manifestation, but nothing actually happened to Erunai's throne. Arthur had expected the king to fall and possibly slump to death itself. Why? Because the king was so blind that he couldn't sense the three priests were involved in something devious. Religious patriots trying to starve a young girl to death; were those really good people?Arthur even wondered if the priests had been faking all along. If they had been trying to abduct rather than liberate people. They really didn't look like people who could discern wizards in Sysia. But what hurt most was the king's blindness to the horrid practices of these priests.Religious beliefs were actually vague; it was hard to tell what these priests truly were. Arthur grasped that too well. The priests' religion was an abstract concept of pure ambiguity. There was nothing so straightforward about it. Instead, these priests tended to mitigate their horrible profiles under the noble title
Chapter 26
It was a cavern, a cave where water dripped from the overhead stone. A dark, oiled metal served as its barrier. And inside, was the merciless bite of unseen frost. There was no better way to sit than to place one's back against the wall and stare at the ventilated barrier for natural air.Arthur was grateful that the cavern was less unconducive. It was spacious enough for someone to breathe. However, it surprised him that this cavern had been built within the walls. It was situated closer to a grand chamber that had been reserved for Wilson.Low hums of conversation could still be heard from where Arthur sat. He could clearly pick out words from the priest and his damned attendant. That same attendant who had implicated him.In all honesty, Arthur wished he could repay this fellow in his own coin. Why hadn't he simply kept quiet? Arthur would have walked away in peace and perhaps would not be trapped in this mess."Those peasants that call themselves priests are merely underdeveloped

"What did you say, Elvic?" Arthur eventually asked, trying to gain some clarity.Elvic smiled even more. "You didn't notice I have been looking at you for some time now?" he asked back.Arthur stood there watching Elvic. It was hard to explain whether Elvic simply chose to make jest of him this way, but this performer had never been too comical as a person. Elvic was strangely reserved yet engaging as an individual."What do you mean by all these?" Arthur frowned at him."Wow," Elvic whispered. "You look even cuter narrowing those eyes." he said.Arthur realized he had had enough of this guy."Are you trying to mock me because I'm about to be executed by these strange people?" he banged against the gate. "That's just the poorest form of comedy, Elvic." he added.Elvic giggled and then pocketed his hands."Don't be afraid, dear. No one is going to touch you." he said with a smile that looked almost devious.Arthur narrowed his eyes even more. At first, he wanted to be relieved that thi

At the mention of those words, Louis, who had been closest to the semi-wooden door, was blown into the open area at a sharp angle. The door exploded with a force that knocked everyone backward. Forthwith, everyone found themselves in the open spot, distanced from the annihilated doorway.Lying on the floor, Louis gasped his last breaths. Across his head was a piece of hardened wood lodged deep into his skull. His hands trembled weakly, searching for life where none could be found. From where Arthur knelt, his fingers jerked to something he couldn't explain. He glanced at the shattered door and then back at the victim. Watching Louis die in that manner was proof that whatever lived behind that door held a brutal malevolence."Oh my Larbanister! Why didn't you tell me you were rearing a demon?" Wilson cried, looking at Gath with a scornful glare."We are not rearing a demon. We are preserving the vessel for Dagon," Father Stone interjected."Dagon? Really?" Wilson laughed. "Do you peasa

If there was one thing Arthur saw as a thrilling entrance, it was the one Elvic had just demonstrated. In all likelihood, Elvic was far more than what he seemed to be. With those yellow eyes that did not look natural and a presence that sent chills through one's body, he was more than he claimed to be. Additionally, it sounded as though he was the cause of all these problems.Ysolde could definitely be weakened by the strange ropes Stone and Wills were wielding. Arthur was unable to tell what those ropes truly were, but they were certainly not something good. And they should not have been something priests ought to be using.Everyone was now facing Elvic, who kept smiling with an unsettling grin. He looked different with those frightening eyes, adding even more dread to the bodies lying across the ground."Who are you, unclean performer?" Stone enquired.Elvic chuckled lightly."Of course you know me, Stone. There is no need for formalities. What matters is that we need to understand

“Aahhhhhh!!! You!!!”It was not a coincidence that the priests screamed at the same time. That gesture made them glance at each other in confusion. Behind them, Edward and Alaric, having had their Clarity Powder effects reduced, watched with total bewilderment.Elvic laughed, her amber eyes glowing brighter. “That simply shows that you are all guilty. Can you see now that you are all fallen?” she said. From the spot where Arthur sat, the urge to accept all that was happening before him was subdued by his inability to fully believe any of it. Elvic is a woman? Does this mean he hardly knew anything about him—no, her?The answers to those questions had long since been born. Because the mystery of Elvic calling him handsome eventually made sense. Maybe Elvic had never truly been a man after all; everything she demonstrated was a foreshadowing of what she really was.“We'll cast you back into the Deep, you evil spirit!” Stone said.“You don't belong here, demon!” Wilson supported.“You ca
