Chapter 41
It was definitely the soil hearkening to the command of Jedd and Osris, not actually the shrubs. Arthur strongly believed he saw that clearly. But he was still far from making a conclusion yet.“So, what can you two manipulate?” Osris asked with pride.“Why are you looking like that, Arthur? Do you sense something strange about them?” Ysolde asked softly, having noticed Arthur's ponderous look. And that question made Arthur remember his nose. Nothing smelled evil about these fellows, no repulsive spiritual foulness despite their soiled physical state. Their spiritual scent wasn't repelling; instead, it was quite the opposite.“No, actually. They don't seem harmful to me,” Arthur answered.“You are not answering?!” Jedd called out.Ysolde refused to take her serious gaze off Arthur. Then she whispered again, “Why then do you have that onerous look?”Arthur smiled.“I think the guys are confused about what they really are,” he replied.“What are they?” Ysolde asked, suddenly excited.Ar
Chapter 42
Insights were limited. Although Arthur happened to know what Osris and Jedd were, he was not sure that could be all there was about them. So he made this known to the guys. Father Gath had explained that performers could only control earth, and that should not be all about them. There could possibly be more.Arthur and Ysolde were shown around the forests by their new friends. The greens were somewhat a haven of their own. There was this good feeling about the place, the views, the endless beauty, and the friendliness that seemed to linger in every part of the atmosphere. And Arthur found it absurd that Osris and Jedd were very dirty and repulsive as well. Meanwhile, beautiful ponds and rivers could be seen along some of the major routes of the endless forests. It should not be possible for them to remain this soiled. But the thought of lecturing the two guys on personal hygiene vanished when they turned through a road that twisted into a slightly dense lawn. Gazing up, massive slabs
Chapter 43
The following morning brought with it a cool sensation. Arthur woke up right from where he had been seated the previous night. His buttocks hurt so much that the pain extended all the way to his waist. Even attempting to stand seemed difficult, as though his body had been glued to the chair. But the chair only jerked slightly when he finally rose.He looked through the forest again. The morning breeze was already howling through the leaves.Arthur could not deny the fact that the air was indeed pleasing. It felt remarkably good.At the same time, the thought of the tormenting growl slipped back into his mind. That thought slowly pulled his attention away from appreciating nature. He wondered what could possess such a dangerous roar.It never sounded like a human, nor like any ferocious beast he had ever come across. It sounded too unreal. The vibration alone had felt destructive. That voice by itself had taught him a little about the science of sound. And of course, not real music, bu
Chapter 44
Arthur almost burst into laughter seeing how sheltered the two brothers were. Explaining what water was used for sounded admittedly hilarious. Ysolde only looked at both brothers and shook her head in pity, as though she couldn't believe anyone could survive this long without knowing something so basic.Afterward, all four of them returned to the pond where Osris transformed himself. Right there, the two brothers realized they had been living quite a life of darkness for most of their years. The discovery left them stunned, and for a while neither of them seemed to know how to react to something as simple as clean water.Just that, Arthur sensed both Osris and Jedd could still be enlightened about things he himself wasn't familiar with. Being observant enough, he could tell they were not entirely safe within these woods. Something walked beneath the embrowned sky. Something moved through the forests with enough confidence to make the entire wilderness feel like its territory.Night re
Chapter 45
“Why are we running away from it? Can't we merge as we did back at the walls of the priests?” Arthur asked while running alongside Ysolde. “Then you will be testing the anger of this thing. Do you know what this is?” Ysolde panted. The Veyrath slapped the earth violently behind them. Arthur fell, followed by an uncontrolled roll, but he sprang up again and resumed running. Ahead of them, Osris and Jedd were fleeing as though their lives depended on it. Of course, their lives depended on it. “Ysolde, just tell me what this thing is!” Arthur cried behind her. “It's a powerful creature known to be extinct. I can't tell why we found one here. And it shouldn't be after us,” Ysolde stated. “Then why is it after us?” Arthur demanded. “I don't—” The Veyrath's muscled and jagged fingers struck the earth again. A turbulent burst of wind exploded outward. Arthur and Ysolde were thrown off their feet before crashing into the ground. Even Osris and Jedd had lost their footing long ago
Chapter 46
It started with a crack. Then another. Then a series of continuous cracks. It almost took Arthur a while to realize the sound was coming from the earth beneath them, as the beast's grunts were proving far too distracting.Osris and Jedd summoned a platform that lifted them above the water. Ysolde remained suspended in the air while Arthur stayed submerged below. The beast kept watching, kept calculating, and seemed content to wait for someone else to make the first move.“Do not attack first. Allow it to make the first move,” Arthur instructed. The Veyrath burst forward with unpredictable speed, blasting straight through the sandy platform the two performers had built. Osris and Jedd immediately thrust themselves into the air, summoning another platform farther away.Ysolde narrowly avoided the attack while Arthur invoked a repulsive art to shield himself. The cantrip required no spoken words. It responded entirely to thought. Even then, the impact sent Arthur tumbling backward until
Chapter 47
Just before the sun exited the sky, Arthur saw his reflection in the waters. His eyes were totally amber. With the cold wind whizzing through the woods, Orisa's image flashed through his mind. He immediately shook his head and looked at the Veyrath again. The creature refused to lower its head. Every one of its roars continued blasting through the water alongside the freezing winds sweeping across the region. It was a very wise choice that Jedd and Osris refrained from attacking. The Veyrath was demonstrating something terrifying. Its roars were manipulating the atmospheric conditions.Arthur repeated the Flames spell again and the fire around him flared higher despite the violent winds. Behind the beast, the others remained where they were. They looked equally disturbed by the sight overhead. Every fog gathering across the sky had darkened into something unnatural. For several moments, the Veyrath's roars gradually reduced in volume. Then the darkness truly arrived. The sky became s
Chapter 48
When they collided, Arthur heard his flames whizzing in his ears as both forces repelled one another. He had actually been listening to the flare of those flames for quite some time now, but the constant hissing of raindrops striking the fire kept distracting him. It was a testament that this fire, which stubbornly refused to burn him, was indeed capable of scorching something else.As he crashed into the water, the liquid hissed even louder against his ears. The sounds were beginning to feel like burdens now. The boiling around him, the endless hissing of rain striking the flames. It never sounded like Ysolde's voice, or... music precisely. As the Veyrath lunged forward for another attack, a massive block of earth burst from the water and slammed into its jaw. The creature convulsed backward as Jedd surged closer through his manipulation of the earth. Osris still held Ysolde, who stubbornly refused to wake. The beast roared just as Arthur summoned a massive ball of fire.Hurling the
Chapter 49
The speed at which Ysolde bolted toward Arthur was beyond prediction. One moment she hovered before the Veyrath with those crimson eyes burning strangely beneath the storm, and the next she was already upon him. Arthur barely saw the movement before an unseen force struck his chest. The impact hurled him backward through the floodwater. He tumbled violently, rolled beneath the current, and sprang back to the surface immediately. Ysolde rushed again. This time her tiny frame crossed the distance between them like a released arrow. Her palm struck across his chest with enough force to stagger him several paces through the rushing water. Arthur managed to remain upright, though the shock of the blow rattled his bones. Anger surged through him. For a fleeting moment, he wondered whether Ysolde had been leading him toward this fate all along. Perhaps every conversation, every warning, every journey they had taken together had been part of a larger deception. Perhaps she had been rais
Chapter 50
The last thing that jagged through his auditory nerves was the roar of the endless waters. There was also the violent splash of liquid, the battering collision of current against flesh and stone, each impact spreading fresh pains across Arthur's body. The moment everything got flooded, his gut loosened inside him as though the waters were trying to untie every knot keeping him together. With his eyes shut tight, he was driven wildly through the darkness beneath the flood, tossed and dragged without direction, yet amidst that chaos another problem steadily worsened. He was becoming hot. Not merely hot, not even feverish, he was truly boiling.Everything had become dark now, and even the downpour felt distant beneath the waters. It was difficult to conclude where exactly they were being carried. The canal itself had been terrifying enough, yet this felt deeper, wider, stranger. Even while trapped inside the turbulent flood, Arthur had not once crashed into another person. That alone
