CHAPTER ELEVEN - Inventory
They made it four blocks before a fire stopped them.It was not a small fire it was a full building on the left side of Trinidad Avenue, the ground floor was completely goneAnd the upper floors were feeding the street below with falling debris and heat that pushed Ray, Zoe and Charlie back against the opposite wall. Two cars on the road were caught in the fire and a third cat was going to catch in the next few minutes.Ray checked the path ahead and the fire covered the width of the street almost completely, a gap of maybe eight feet between the burning car on the right and the building wall on the left. It can easily be passed but not comfortable. He was calculating the crossing when he heard a sound. It was a small and high pitched sound coming from inside the burning ground floor."Mom. Mom. Mom."Ray stopped moving. The word repeated without stopping, the repeated sound of a child who had been saying it long enough that it had stopped being a sentence and become just a sound
CHAPTER TWELVE - The Train
They could hear the train before they saw the station. One long horn sounded from a distance, it was close enough that Ray broke into a full run without saying a word and the others followed suit.Charlie pulled ahead slightly, Zoe kept her pace, Ray with Eli locked against his chest with one arm.Two blocks now, one.Trinidad Avenue station came into view and Ray didn't slow his pace but his stomach became stiff immediately. There were hundreds of people packed from the station entrance back down the street in both directions, pushing, screaming, climbing over each other with bags and children and nothing. Some of them had nothing at all. A woman had fallen near the entrance and people were stepping almost on her without halting. Two men were throwing punches against the left wall over a backpack. A child was crying somewhere in the crowd with no adult responding. The city had emptied itself toward this single point."Stay together," Ray said. "Don't separate for anything."He pu
CHAPTER THIRTEEN - Clearance
The soldier's rifle was still up.Ray raised his free hand anyway. Not at the soldier directly in front of him but at all the four of them at the same time. He pushed the signal outward wider than he had ever pushed it, not targeted at infected this time but at four armed humans, and he had no idea if it would work on people and he had no time to find out slowly. Two rifles dropped from two Soldiers. Both soldiers' arms fell to their sides like the instruction to hold the weapon simply stopped existing in their heads. They stood there with empty hands and confused faces and Ray was already moving through the gate before either of them understood what just happened. The crowd behind him saw the rifles drop. That was all it took.Ray thought about this and it kept running through his mind.******Ray found four seats together at the rear of the car and put Eli down in the window seat and stayed standing long enough to check the car. Forty survivors packed in, more than the seats allo
CHAPTER FOURTEEN - Moving
"Hey, you"A man's voice slashed through the noise of the car before Ray even finished pulling the second supply pack from inventory. He had started with a small water bottle for Eli first, then food, crackers and sealed protein bars, then a clean shirt for the boy.Because the one he was wearing had smoke damage and dried blood on the sleeve that wasn't his. Eli had accepted the clean shirt with the seriousness of a child treating a little normal thing like it was important, which it was. Then Ray pulled a full meal pack and two water bottles for Charlie and Zoe and the man in the seat opposite from them stood up."Hey." Louder this time. "How the hell are you doing that?"Ray didn't answer. He handed Zoe her water and turned back to his seat."I'm talking to you." The man stepped into the aisle. Big body build and his early forties, wearing construction jacket, three days of beard and the specific aggression of someone who had been scared for too long and needed somewhere to put it
CHAPTER FIFTEEN - Dead Stop
Ray was moving before anyone else in the car stood up."Stay here," he said to Charlie. It was not a suggestion but an order.Charlie grabbed Eli and pulled him close and nodded.Ray moved up the aisle toward the driver's compartment door at the front of the car. People grabbed at him as he passed them with different questions, their hands were on his arm.A woman blocking the aisle asking if they had hit something. He moved through all of it without stopping and reached the compartment door and tried the handle. It was locked. He knocked twice. "Hello, is anyone there?"Nothing. He knocked harder. "Driver, talk to me right now."It was completely still.Ray stepped back and hit the door with his shoulder once, flat and hard, and the lock gave out and the door swung inward and he went through.******The driver was in his seat.He slumped forward, with his forehead almost touching the console, both hands in his lap. Ray grabbed his shoulder and pulled him upright and looked at his
CHAPTER SIXTEEN - The Collection
The train door flung open. Two mercenaries entered from the front simultaneously. They were wearing dark jackets with no insignia.Their weapons were already drawn and held low but not pointing at anyone, it was just present, the way experts carry weapons when they want cooperation. Two more came through the rear door behind Ray's position.Four were in his car alone. He stayed seated and counted what he could see through the windows. Eight more were outside moving along the track in both directions. Making twelve in total. All moving with the specific coordination of people who had practiced this, who knew the layout of this train before they even boarded it.The car went completely still. Not the silence of people who didn't understand what was happening. The silence of people who understood exactly what was happening and had decided that stillness was the correct response. The lead mercenary moved up the aisle without speaking. He was carrying a device in his left hand and wea
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN - Underground
The vehicle stopped and Ray timed the moment.Forty one minutes from mile marker 47. He had tracked every turn during the movement. Three lefts, two rights, one long straight that lasted eleven minutes, then a descent. That last part was what told him everything. The vehicle had angled downward for the final four minutes, following a gradual slope, the kind built deliberately into the ground rather than following natural structure. It was an underground facility. The door opened and two mercenaries pulled him out and he got three seconds to look at the entrance before they moved him through it. It was made of reinforced concrete ramp, military grade steel doors at the bottom standing open, and two armed guards on each side.Cameras were also at every corner with no windows anywhere visible. No signage and no external markers of any kind. They walked him through the doors and into a corridor and the doors closed behind him and the sound changed completely. The outside world was gone
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN - Subject 14
“Alright, where do you want us to get started?” Samuels adjusted her glasses and exhaled."My father's ability," Ray said. "Walk me through everything."Samuels opened the file to page four and turned it toward him without rushing. It was a typed document, with dense government formatted handwriting and dates running down the left margin starting seventeen years ago. Ray didn't read it yet he just kept his eyes on Samuels."Your father came to us voluntarily," she said. "He noticed things about himself in his late twenties. He noticed objects suddenly appearing in his hands, physical injuries closing faster than they should.”She continued.“He thought he was losing his mind and he found us through a contact and we ran tests for eight months before we understood what we were looking at." She paused. She adjusted her glasses."The inventory ability, the regeneration, the signal control and any abilities of yours none of it was created by any experiment. It is a genetic inheritance
CHAPTER NINETEEN - Gone
Samuels put one finger on the label under the left photograph."These rooms were assigned to your sister and mother six hours ago by Arnold's operation. When our team reached the location four hours ago the rooms were already empty. Both patients were moved in the two hour window between assignment and our arrival."Ray looked up from the photographs. "Moved by who?""We don't know.""Give me your best guess.""We have three possibilities." Samuels held up one finger. "Arnold moved them himself when he realised the facility had been compromised." She raised her second finger. "Or Wolfe's people tracked the location through Arnold's network and extracted them for leverage. She then raised her third finger. "Or maybe the third part took them.""The third part," Ray said. "The one you can't name.""We already have locations and patterns. We have eight months of organ harvesting data that matches neither Wolfe's operation system nor ours.”She sighed and stared at Ray slowly. But what w
CHAPTER TWENTY: Back On Foot
Ray heard the mercenary coming before the door opened. It was a single set of footsteps and heavier on the right foot, like the walk of someone carrying weight on one side, a weapon, a radio and something holstered. The footsteps stopped outside his room and the door handle moved and Ray was already standing with his back to the wall beside the frame when the door came open. The mercenary stepped in looking at the table where Ray had been sitting.Ray hit him once from the side, a clean hit, at the jaw, and caught him before he hit the floor. He lowered him quietly and took his keycard from his jacket and the radio from his belt and moved into the corridor. Two more between him and the exit. He had examined their positions from sound during the twenty minutes alone One was stationed at the corridor junction twenty feet ahead, the other one at the base of the entrance ramp at the far end. Radio hung on his belt and crackled once and he pressed the volume down immediately and kept
