CHAPTER ONE - Before it Ends
“Arrgh! You promised” Ray screamed helplessly. “You said you would release her!”Dani was on the ground sprawling weakly in front of him.Her clothes were tattered and her face was covered with dirt while her chin was bleeding as she trembled violently. This kind of trembling was not because she was cold but because she had been severely tortured and it was due to fear.Ray had witnessed enough of the apocalypse to understand what the shaking meant and the moment he understood it, his emotions died instantly and permanently, he was about to lose his sister. He has done every single thing he was asked to do.He had commanded zombies on their given orders and had cleared sectors, he had been pushed into the infected zone by Wolfe and his men and had used the ability to separate him from any other living being on earth for their purpose. Why? Because they had his sister and had promised not to hurt her as long as he obeyed all their orders. But it was all a lie.Wolfe bent down beside Da
CHAPTER TWO - One Week
Ray stood still at the entrance to his mother's room for a long time before she saw him.She was sitting up in bed the same way she always did every morning with her back in a straight position and hot tea on a small stool beside her, reading glasses slightly balanced at her nose tip reading a church magazine.Anna Parker never wasted her mornings, even though she had a heart attack which had been getting worse for the past three months she was always up before six and reading before seven. She looked up and saw him.“What's wrong dear, are you okay?.” She asked, staring at his face.Ray almost burst into a loud laughter, nothing was wrong with him yet, not now.“Nothing mom, I'm just happy I'm seeing you.”An unreadable expression of surprise ran through her face then it disappeared immediately.“Glad you're awake too.” She said,She went back to her reading and Ray left to eat at the dining but instead he stood beside a large table to think of how to clear everything in his head.He
CHAPTER THREE - Already Late
Ray's phone rang on Thursday at 5:00 am.He was already awake and had been sitting at the kitchen table with a notepad in front trying to build every list of names he knew would be connected to project X.The list had not been bulky, it only had three different names. He quickly grabbed the phone after ringing the second time.“Hello Ray,.” It wasn't Dani's voice, it was her room mate, Sara, her voice was hurried and abnormal.“Something has happened to Dani, she's…. I don't actually know what's wrong with her , she has these whitish substances all over her mouth and she scares me, her face looks…” Sara suddenly stopped. “Ray, her face was not normal.”Ray was already on his feet. “Don't touch her, don't allow anybody to come inside that room, I'm on my way now.”He was out of the room like a flash, he ran for almost five miles.Whatever the future version of himself had carried it had started coming to reality now.He didn't even think, he kept running and kept his phone glued to his
CHAPTER FOUR - Whitefield
Ray grabbed the form and he immediately signed it.He didn't read it this time. He already knew every word on every page. He took the pen from Wolfe's hand without giving it a second thought and signed his name at the bottom and handed it back without making any eye contact.Wolfe looked at him for a moment. Something shifted in his expression, not suspicion exactly, more like a man recalculating a number that came out different than expected. The process took four hours.Ray was taken to a facility and experimented on with different tubes implanted into him, he was also injected several times. The operation was a success. After the operation Ray suddenly stood up.“I need to be somewhere.” He told Crane“But we just finished the experiment, you need a few hours to fully recover and you need to be at the facility before…""I need two hours first," Ray said."That's not how this….""My mother and my sister are both in this hospital right now." Ray looked at him directly. "You're not
CHAPTER FIVE - Zoe
Ray grabbed the shelf and held on stiffly. The white in his vision had begun to disappear slowly. The store sounds came back with sounds of trolley wheels, a checkout beeping, music from the speaker above the third aisle. He was still bent and Zoe still had his arm.“I need to call someone,” she said.“No.” Ray adjusted and pulled himself off the shelf. "Don't. I'm fine.""You are not fine, you almost just hit the floor now.""I'm fine." He looked at her directly. "Please don't call anyone."She stared at him for a second. She had that kind of face that didn't hide what it was thinking. She thought he was being stupid and she was deciding whether to respect it or ignore it.She let go of his arm but didn't walk away.Ray breathed and counted and waited for the next round of spikes. It would surely come. In his previous life the symptoms had hit in three different waves before the final blackout arrived. He was somewhere in between the sequence right now.He had maybe twenty minut
CHAPTER SIX - Life Saver
"Ray. Ray, please wake up."Zoe's voice echoed on the second word. She knelt beside him on the stockroom floor, both hands on his shoulders, shaking him vigorously. His body was completely limp. His veins along his forearms and neck had discolored and it was visible through the skin, branching upward slowly. He didn't respond. She pressed two fingers to his neck there was pulse there but it was weak and unsteady, like a phone battery at two percent, but there. The glass at the front of the store cracked again and it was louder this time. Then a sound she had never heard before that doesn't sound human or animal came from multiple directions at once, growing. She couldn't leave him here. She didn't know this man, she had met him thirty minutes ago at the fourth aisle. She didn't know his last name or where he lived or why his manager had thrown his wages on the floor and made him pick them up. All she knew his name was Ray and he stocked shelves and he had taken a cereal bar from
CHAPTER SEVEN - What He Became
Ray hit the first zombie before it fully made an attempt A single punch punch and ut banged in the shelving unit and brought half a crate of items down with it unable to stand up. Cans flung across the floor in different direction.Zoe recoiled against the office doorframe behind him and kept mute.Three more approached from the checkout lanes. Ray moved toward them instead of waiting for them and that was the difference he made, zombies expected things to run but he didn't run. He closed the distance and hit the first one across the jaw and grabbed the second one by the collar before it could react and drove it headfirst into the corner of the checkout counter. He adjusted himself and looked at his hands. He felt no pain throughout, and his hands were still.Whatever Project X had done to him in the minutes he was unconscious on that floor, it had strengthened him. He could feel it as if it was part of him now.He turned back to Zoe. "Stay directly behind me and move faster,
CHAPTER EIGHT - Dead Streets
The city looked like it had not been alive for years. But it was just few hours.Ray and Zoe moved along the left side of Crescent Street, tight to the buildings, stepping over broken glass and around two bodies that Ray did not look at long enough to recognize. Four vehicles had halted in the middle of the road at angles that suggested the drivers had simply stopped caring about lanes. One was still speeding with door open, radio playing something that had no business existing in this street right now."How far are we going?," Zoe asked quietly.“Twelve blocks.”She nodded twice and kept moving.Ray was observing everything simultaneously. The entrance, the doorways, the broken windows above them and the space between stopped vehicles. In his previous life he had learned that the zombies moved in a kind of pattern even when they looked random. Sound was the first thing that attract them then the next thing was movement. The ones that had turned recently were faster and more aggre
CHAPTER NINE - Restricted
St Emmanuel looked like as if a group of bodies was used to build itRay halted at the corner of Millbrook Road and just looked at it for five good seconds. The entire block in front of the hospital was filled up. They were not scattered like those in Crescent street. They were packed from shoulder to shoulder with no space. More were coming around both sides of the building from the car park, all of them were moving with a focused aggression that the ones on Crescent Street hadn't had. These were different.Ray could see it all of a sudden all the zombies movement. They were more coordinated and the ones at the edges were actively looking around.Their heads were turning in more controlled position like they were watching perimeters. In his previous life the infected had taken weeks to develop that kind of group behaviour. But now they had it on the first day.Something about St Emmanuel had improved their mutation.“There are so many of them,” Zoe said beside him. Her voice som
CHAPTER TEN - Trinidad Avenue
Dr. Arnold grabbed Ray's wrist tight. His grip was weak but his eyes were sharp and present, and still thinking behind whatever was reducing his body's strength. His lips moved three times before he spoke."Trinidad Avenue." Each word cost him something. "Twenty blocks north. There is a train." He stopped and breathed. "Three hours and it leaves for Kansas before…."His hand dropped immediately.Ray pulled his collar. "Before what Arnold, before what happens…"No answer Arnold's eyes were still open, but his body had gone completely still. He wasn't dead because Ray checked his pulse and found it, thin but fighting. Whatever happened to him in that room had not killed him completely. Something else was working through his system and Ray did not have time to point out what.He stood up.Zoe was already looking at him. "What's in Kansas.""I don't know.""What's on Trinidad Avenue.""I don't know that either." Ray looked at Arnold on the floor. He couldn't carry him and he couldn't le
