What the dust remembers
The dark inside the records hall wasn't empty.Kael knew it the way you know someone is standing behind you in a quiet room. He didn't turn. He kept his eyes on the carved word on the wall, and he let his hand drift, slowly, toward the knife at his belt that he had never once used on anything but vegetables.A match scraped. A lamp came alive in the far corner."Twenty years," an old voice said. "I had started to think the stories were wrong."The man behind the lamp was small and bent, with milky eyes that didn't track the flame. He sat on a stool between two shelves like he'd grown there. His robe had no color Kael could name. It might once have been white."You're the archivist.""I'm the dust." The old man smiled, and several teeth were missing. "Archivists get promoted. Dust gets forgotten. Sit, boy. You're letting the cold in."There was nowhere to sit except the floor, so Kael stayed standing. The old man seemed to approve of that."Don't ask my name. I gave it up when they sto

The woman with the lantern
Nobody moved for a while. The lamp on the archivist's desk burned steady. Elder Maren's lantern burned steady. The only unsteady thing in the room was the floor, which had started to hum louder, a note so low that Kael felt it in his back teeth before he heard it."You're doing that," Maren said quietly. "The floor. You should stop.""I'm not doing anything.""That's exactly the problem."She stepped inside and pulled the door shut behind her. Up close she looked older than she had in her office. There was gray at her temples that hadn't been there three days ago, or maybe he just hadn't looked. She set the lantern on the floor, and she kept both hands where he could see them."I'm going to tell you something true," she said. "You're going to decide I'm lying anyway. That's fine. Just listen first. We have maybe a quarter of an hour."Kael kept his palm on the ledger. "Until what?""Until the gate bell rings."The archivist made a small dry sound that might have been a laugh. Maren ig

The door that knew his hand
The third shelf slid aside before he touched it.Behind it stood a slab of black stone with no handle, no hinge, no keyhole. Just a shallow hollow in the middle, the size of a man's palm, polished smooth by nothing Kael could see. He heard the boots reach the cloister door. He heard Maren's breath catch. He heard the archivist say, almost kindly, "Quickly, now."He pressed his hand into the hollow. It was warm. That was the first surprise. Stone shouldn't be warm. The slab opened without a sound, and cold air rolled out of the dark, carrying a smell he knew from somewhere much older than his own life. Wet rock. Old iron. Water that had never seen a sky."Go," Maren whispered. "I'll hold the hall.""You can't hold an Inquisitor.""No." She picked up her lantern and straightened her robe, and for one strange second she looked exactly like what she was, a woman who had decided something twenty years ago and was only now paying for it. "But I can be annoying for a few minutes."Kael stepp

The lock and the key
It did not hurt the way he expected.Kael had braced for fire. Pain was the language he understood, the price you paid for anything worth having. But the black light closed over his hand like cool water, and what flooded up his arm was not agony. It was memory. Not his. That was what made his knees give. A woman running through snow with a child against her chest. A man in grey and gold robes, kneeling in front of a gate of bone and iron, whispering words into the lock. A thousand faces, one after another, all with the same stubborn jaw he saw in the mirror every morning, each handing something small and shining to the next.A key. Passed down. Passed down. Passed down.Every Warden carried a fragment, the First Being said. The voice was inside him now, not beside him. Your mother's line held eleven. Your father's held nine. You were born carrying all twenty, folded small, because they knew they would not survive to teach you.Something behind his ribs unfolded. Not all at once. A dra

The ground'skeeper
Oris made tea. That was the first thing he did, before Kael had found his voice, before either of them had said a single useful word. He filled the dented kettle, set it on the little iron stove, and fished two chipped cups from the shelf where they'd always been. His hands were steady. His left eye, the wrong one, a pale silver with no visible pupil, watched the kettle with the same flat patience the right one did.Kael sat down on the cot because his legs had decided for him.The shed was exactly as he'd left it. Same crooked table, same knife scratches on the shelf, same patch of damp in the corner shaped like a dog's head. Only the candle was new. And the man."You're dead," Kael said finally."I was." Oris poured. The steam rose between them. "Drink that. You look like something the well coughed up.""It did.""Then drink it twice."Kael drank. The tea was bitter and too hot and tasted like every morning of his childhood, and something in his chest that had been clenched for four

Warden ground
Daven Sorrel did not knock."Kael Dravon!" His voice carried easily. It was a voice trained for rooms with high ceilings. "By authority of the Ashveil Order and the Third Elder's seat, you are charged with desertion, theft of restricted records, and unlawful contact with a sealed archive. Come out, and you will be bound with dignity."Nobody answered. The torches hissed. A horse shifted. Somewhere above the thatch of the old groundskeeper's shed, a crow lifted off a beam and flapped away into the dark."I see," Daven said. "We'll do it the other way."He lifted one hand, and the rider beside him unwrapped an oilcloth bundle and raised something into the air. A shallow bronze bowl, etched inside with rings upon rings of tiny characters. The characters caught the torchlight and began, slowly, to glow. The ground groaned.Inside the shed, Oris winced like a man who'd stepped on a splinter. "That's going to be annoying.""Can it hurt you?""It can hurt the ground, which is worse." Oris wa
