CHAPTER 90
FELIXFelix walked into the loud, dirty market tent. It was hidden in a small snowy village near the dead mines. The air smelled like sulfur and cheap beer. People with scars and heavy coats pushed past him. Felix kept his head down. He held a small bag of gold coins tight in his hand.He walked up to a wooden table in the back. Behind the table sat an old man. The man had a metal patch over one eye and only three fingers on his left hand."What do you want, kid?" the old man grunted. "This is not a toy shop.""I need explosive powder," Felix said. He tried to make his voice sound deep, but it squeaked a little. "And smoke bombs. A lot of them."The old man looked at Felix with his one good eye. "Blast powder? What for? You look like a student, not a miner.""My boss bought a new mine in the south," Felix lied smoothly. "The rocks are too hard. The pickaxes keep breaking. He told me to buy the strong stuff to clear the cave."The old man stared for a second. Then, he reached under the
CHAPTER 91
The hidden cave behind the frozen waterfall was small, but the four of them sat in a circle on the dirt floor. A small magic fire burned in the center, giving them some heat. They placed all their new supplies in the middle of the circle.Bags of explosive Thunder-Dust. Black Shadow-Bombs. Five bottles of green Iron-Eater acid. A belt full of silver Sun-Flares. Wire-cutters, spider-silk rope, and healing bandages.Felix looked at the pile of weapons. He pushed his glasses up and wiped sweat from his forehead. "I feel like we are starting our own war.""We are," Darius laughed. He picked up one of the Sun-Flares and tossed it in the air. "Did you tell the old man you were a miner, Felix? You look too weak to hold a pickaxe.""I told him I was a worker!" Felix defended himself. His face turned red. "It worked! He gave me the bombs. What did you tell your seller? That you were a lost prince looking for a shiny toy?"Luna giggled. "Darius probably tried to fight the blacksmith to prove ho
CHAPTER 92
Captain Korr walked down the heavy metal walls of the Iron Peak. The cold wind blew snow into his face, but he did not care. He was angry. Preceptor Vane told him not to worry, but Korr was a soldier. He did not trust luck. He only trusted thick steel and sharp weapons."Move faster!" Captain Korr yelled at a group of workers in grey coats. The workers carried heavy iron plates. They pushed the plates against the small side doors of the fortress."Weld them shut!" Korr ordered. "Melt the metal! I do not want a single door open in the outer wall. If anyone wants to come in, they have to break the main gate!"Bright sparks flew into the dark sky. The workers used magic fire to melt the iron plates. They sealed every small door, every window, and every air vent.Korr walked to the next group. These were magic-users. They were painting glowing red symbols on the ground and the walls."Are the Null-Runes ready?" Korr asked.A magic-user bowed. "Yes, Captain. The Null-Runes are active. They
CHAPTER 93
The black smoke from the explosion hung thick in the cold air. Quinn ran through the falling dust and fire. His eyes were locked onto the large metal doors ahead. Darius, Luna, and Felix ran right behind him.Right beside Quinn, Bell just rubbed her eyes and yawned loudly."Master, the loud booms hurt my ears," Bell complained lazily. She kicked a piece of broken stone out of her way."Stay close, Bell," Quinn said. He kept his fists raised. "We are going to need you.""Okay," Bell mumbled. "But I want to sleep when this is done."They pushed through the smoke and entered the middle circle of the Iron Peak. The hallway was wide and made of shiny steel. But it was not empty."Halt!" a voice yelled.Thirty guards in heavy black armor blocked the path. They held long electric spears. Behind them, five magic-users raised their hands."Kill the intruders!" the guard captain shouted."I will clear a path!" Darius roared. He jumped forward. He swung his green sword with all his strength. "Ga
CHAPTER 94
"Hold your breath!" Quinn ordered loudly.Quinn ran to the solid steel wall. He pulled his fist back. He punched the thick metal with his heavy Star-Iron glove. BANG! The sound was deafening, but it did nothing. The wall was three feet of solid steel. The Star-Iron could break magic, but it could not break a mountain of metal.Felix dropped to his knees. He covered his mouth and nose with both hands. "I cannot breathe!" Felix cried. His voice was muffled. "My eyes burn!"Luna pulled out her last glass bottle of Iron-Eater acid. She threw it against the steel door. The glass shattered. The bright green acid splashed on the metal. It hissed and smoked, but the door was too thick. It only melted a tiny layer off the top."It is not working!" Luna coughed. She fell against the wall, sliding down to the floor. "The door is too thick!"The green gas was everywhere now. It stung their eyes. It burned their throats.Darius leaned on his green sword. He coughed violently. He wiped tears from h
CHAPTER 95
Behind him, Darius kept his green sword raised. Felix held his broken screen. Luna rubbed her arms to stay warm. Bell floated next to Quinn, wrapping her giant black cloak tightly around her small body."Master, it is very cold here," Bell shivered. "The magic feels heavy. It feels like a giant sleeping rock.""Stay close to me, Bell," Quinn said quietly. "We are almost there."Felix pushed his cracked glasses up his nose. He looked at his screen. The blue light blinked very fast. "We are right above it. The giant ice block is at the bottom of these stairs. I can read the life signs of the children. They are very weak, Quinn. We do not have much time."Luna’s hands turned into tight fists. Her blue eyes burned with a fierce light. "They will not die today. I will heal every single one of them.""Listen to me," Quinn stopped on the stairs. He turned around to look at his squad.Darius, Luna, and Felix stopped. They looked at Quinn."Behind this door is the final wall of defense," Quinn
CHAPTER 96
"Kill them all," Preceptor Vane whispered softly. He dropped his hand. Hundreds of sharp silver needles shot through the cold air. They moved like silver rain, aiming straight for the backs of the broken squad.Quinn lay on the ice. The heavy gravity pressed his face into the cold floor. His body was completely out of strength. But in his mind, he heard the children crying in the iron cages. He heard Luna gasping for air.*I will not die here.*Quinn closed his eyes. He did not pull on his physical muscles. He pulled on the dark magic snake wrapped around his right arm. He fed his anger to the shadow. He fed his pain to the darkness. The black snake on his arm hissed loudly. It bit deep into Quinn’s own skin.Dark, pitch-black smoke exploded out of Quinn’s body. The smoke did not just float. It acted like a giant pair of hands. The dark magic grabbed the invisible gravity pressing down on them and violently ripped it apart.*CRACK!*The sound of the gravity spell breaking echoed like
CHAPTER 97
Vane glared at Quinn. "You... you cannot kill me. I am the voice of the circle. If I die, a hundred more will take my place. The Beast... will wake up.""You talk too much," Quinn said.Quinn reached into his dark bag. He pulled out the white healing bandages he bought from the market. He knelt down next to Vane."What are you doing?" Vane gasped. He tried to push Quinn away, but his arms were completely broken.Quinn wrapped the thick white bandages tightly around Vane's mouth. He tied a hard knot at the back of Vane's head. Vane let out a muffled scream. He could not open his mouth. He could not speak a single magic spell."Felix, give me the spider-silk rope," Quinn ordered.Felix ran over. He handed Quinn the thin, black rope.Quinn rolled Vane onto his stomach. He tied Vane’s hands behind his back. He wrapped the spider-silk rope around Vane’s legs, pulling it tight. The thin rope was stronger than steel. Vane kicked and struggled like an angry worm, but he could not break free.
CHAPTER 98
At the end of the throne room sat the King of the North. He was an old man, but he was very big. He wore thick white furs over his royal armor. His face was stern and angry. His eyes were like sharp ice.The heavy oak doors of the throne room opened with a loud creak.Four Royal Knights marched in. They wore shining silver armor. In the middle of the knights was Preceptor Vane.Vane looked terrible. He was no longer a neat, polite man in grey robes. His robes were torn and stained with dark blood. His face was covered in bruises from Quinn's punches. The thick white bandages were still tied tightly around his mouth. The heavy spider-silk rope still tied his legs. But the knights had added more. They had wrapped massive, heavy dread-iron chains around Vane’s chest and arms. Two knights dragged him across the smooth marble floor. They threw Vane to the ground right in front of the King’s throne.Vane hit the floor hard. He groaned, but he glared up at the King with his blind, white eyes
CHAPTER 99
"Darius," Quinn said. "You are coming with me."Darius smiled. He wiped his mouth and stood up. He grabbed his green sword and tied it to his belt. "Finally. We go to get our gold. I am ready to be rich again."Felix looked up from his dead, broken screen. "Be careful. If the Royal Knights recognize you, they might trap you. You made a huge mess at the Iron Peak.""They will not trap us," Quinn said. His voice was calm and flat. "We will go in, prove who we are, take the money, and leave. We do not stay for a party."Luna crossed her arms. "Do not fight anyone, Darius. We just need the fifty thousand gold coins for Felix's new screen, and money to fix your weapons.""I am a gentleman," Darius laughed. "I only fight when someone is stupid.""Stay here and protect Bell," Quinn told Luna and Felix.Bell was asleep on a wooden chair. Her face was covered in breadcrumbs. She snored softly.Quinn and Darius walked out of the tavern. The cold winter wind hit their faces. They walked through
