CHAPTER 111: The Third Seal
Davan did not give up the ledger right away. He stood under the eave with both hands on its cover, the way a man holds a door he is not sure he wants to open. The wind had turned in the last hour and now came off the canal in short, wet pushes. It carried the smell of tar and fish from the lower docks, and somewhere behind the Office a gutter ran full and loud. The lamp in the side doorway laid a thin yellow line across the bottom step. Cassian could see the grain of the stone where the light touched it, worn into shallow dips by a century of clerks' boots. He thought about Cress's letter, the phrase about records held back for review. He had read that sentence four times and never asked who wrote the review schedule. He asked himself now, and the answer was a shrug he did not like.Behind them the Keeper's cane sounded on the cobbles. Cassian turned. She came up the last few steps slowly, one hand on the iron rail, her breath short but her eyes steady. Her coat was buttoned wrong, on
CHAPTER 112: The Man at the Desk
The door stuck. Damp had swollen the frame, and Cassian had to put his shoulder into it before it gave with a groan that went up the stairwell like a shout. Behind him Aldric swore under his breath.Inside, the air was warm and bad. Wet wool, lamp oil, old paper, and under it the sour tang of a chamber pot somebody had forgotten to empty. The stairs were narrow and the treads were dished in the middle, slick with a century of boots. The Keeper took them one at a time. Seraphine climbed behind her with a hand hovering at the small of her back, close enough to catch and careful not to touch.Cassian's mark had started to itch under his collar. A dull, crawling heat, like a burn that was healing wrong. It got worse with every step.On the second landing a line of yellow light showed under a door. A pen was scratching inside. It stopped when the stair creaked under Aldric's weight."Come in," said a voice. "The whole street heard you at the door. No point being polite about it now."The r
CHAPTER 113: What the Ledger Wouldn't Say
Nobody went first. The gutter ran loud outside, and the Keeper's breath rasped in the quiet. Holt kept his shirt open. The scar shone on his chest, and every pulse of it landed in Cassian's breastbone like a thumb pressed into a bruise.Aldric broke it. "Sayle. What was he to you?""A courier." Holt rubbed his split thumbnail with the other thumb, over and over. "Iver's nephew. Owed me a favor, and he was stupid enough to think favors meant something. I gave him the die and told him to carry a note to a boy in the marsh. I didn't tell him why.""He tried to sell us out in Brannock's loft," Aldric said. "He had a knife on a woman.""Then he was stupider than I thought." Holt didn't look away. "I'm not asking you to forgive that. I didn't plan that part.""What part did you plan?" Seraphine asked.Holt let out a long breath through his nose. The room smelled of cold tea and his sweat, sharp and old. "The report. The commission's report on the marsh settlements was going out at month's e
CHAPTER 114: Names Against the Door
Aldric had the bolt thrown before the first boot hit the landing. It was a thin iron thing that wouldn't stop a determined child. He put his shoulder to the desk and grunted. "Help me. Now."Seraphine took the other end. Ink pots skidded off the blotter, and one tipped, spilling black across the wood and into the cold tea. Holt snatched the lamp clear with both shaking hands. They dragged the desk across the floor and jammed it against the hallway door just as something heavy hit it from the other side. The whole frame shuddered. Plaster dust sifted down Cassian's collar and stuck to the sweat on his neck."Archivist Holt." A man's voice, calm, almost bored. "Conclave review. We know you have the book.""Window?" Aldric said."Two floors up, canal side," Holt said. "You'd land on the tar barges and break both legs.""There's the copy room," Davan said. His voice squeaked, and he swallowed and tried again. "On the far wall, behind the shelves. It has its own servants' stair down to the
