Chapter 1- The Price of Loyalty
Far away from the shore, a private luxury cruise ship moved slowly across the ocean, the waves tossing and turning as turbulently as Calvin’s current emotions. He was feeling an extreme level of frustration and anger, neither of which was overshadowed by the immense pain coming from his left shoulder and elbow. He was dressed in his usual black T-shirt and jeans combination, one of his leather boots lost and destroyed somewhere, his bare foot leaking blood that flowed off the deck of the cruise ship and into the ocean behind him.Several holes dotted his shirt across his torso and legs, each one dripping blood, while small blades of glowing white light protruded from his thigh, shoulder, and elbow.Such a level of damage would've been fatal to a normal man, but Calvin was an elementalist with a body within the realm of superhumans.Even among the strongest superhumans, there were very few Elementalists on the same Rank as Calvin.Few, but not zero. And five of those scarce few had com
Chapter 2- The Shadow Reborn
Public HospitalDand CityEdgard CountryMay 1stYear 2020In one of the wards of the government hospital, there were two dozen beds, but only the right one closest to the window was occupied. On the bed was a slim youth who’d just turned 18 less than a month earlier, his head wrapped in bandages. He had messy black hair with long bangs covering the top of his eyes, and his thin lips were pressed into a deep frown.Behind the round glasses resting on his face was a pair of obsidian black eyes fixed on the news being played on the TV.It was reporting how a corpse had washed up on the shores of Elverta City, a popular coastal city often called the ‘Beach City’.The dead man had been identified as a 35-year-old company CEO who owned several businesses in Edgard’s capital, Aegall. Police were investigating the case seriously, not only due to the man’s identity and background, but also because on a night several days before his body washed ashore, dozens of his company buildings had been
Chapter 3- The Warmth of a Mother
Right outside the door, two voices could be heard.“Irma, I have 50,000 dollars in my savings account. It’s the money I was gathering up for Calvin’s college fee, but what use is it if he loses his life before that? Why are you stopping me from withdrawing it all?!”“Calm down, Martha,” the second voice said. “Don’t use it all. I’d give you some money to add to it for the surgery. You can use the rest of the money to care for yourselves after the surgery. You’ll need to take leave from work, won’t you? You’ll need money for drugs too!”“That…that’s true…” Martha muttered quietly.“Yes. So don’t worry. I’d pay it as we go downstairs so they can start the surgery quickly. You should also try to call our eldest brother.”Just as the woman named Irma said that, Martha immediately snapped.“That stingy man?! He and that money-grubbing wife of his would rather die than let anyone borrow their money.”The dialogue between the two women reached Calvin’s ears clearly through the gap in the doo
Chapter 4- The Family of Light and Shadow
By the time Calvin woke up, he’d already been checked by doctors, and his condition was confirmed to be relatively stable, especially compared to how he’d been when he was brought in.The impact from the metal pipes hitting his head had been enough to make him bleed heavily, and the doctor’s initial diagnosis had been grim. But now, seeing him, the doctor was so stunned he had to call a colleague to examine Calvin again to make sure he wasn’t mistaken. They then prescribed some drugs to deal with his blood loss and the swelling on his head, then left, leaving Calvin alone with his mother and her twin.Looking at the woman who had a faint red tint in her eyes that was very different from her twin’s brown eyes, Calvin was 99% sure of his hypothesis from earlier.‘She’s definitely an elementalist! A dormant one that hasn’t even awakened her affinity.’It seemed that his being reborn in Calvin Carter’s body wasn’t as random as he’d thought. Calvin likely had his own innate elemental power
Chapter 5- Awakening the King’s Core
In this world, everyone had an element they were in tune with. But while the majority had only the lowest possible affinity, there were those with strong enough affinities to awaken elemental powers and become Elementalists.Elementalists cultivated their powers by absorbing their respective elemental energies from the ambient energy permeating the world to increase their Ranks. They could also do this by absorbing the energy within the elemental cores of dead Elemental Beasts and Monsters that roamed the world.Just like humans awakened to elemental powers, so did animals, turning them into beasts that had, over thousands of years, mutated and evolved into a variety of new breeds and species.Dangerous new breeds and species, that is.Calvin closed his eyes and meditated, trying to feel the elemental energy in the air. Due to the Elemental King’s Core fused in his soul, his elemental energy sensitivity was on a completely different level, so it was easy for him to detect and silently
Chapter 6- A Strike from the Dark
Water elementalists were often renowned for their healing abilities, but the water element could bring as much death as it could bring life.Pressurised water was a deadly weapon, and if the spear hovering in front of that man’s palm was fired at top speed, he doubted that the younger doctor would be able to jump to the side fast enough to avoid it.Even if he did, the elementalist could just fire another.A cold breeze blew across the open balcony roof of the building, the two doctors silently facing one another while Calvin hid in the dark and considered his next course of action. While he was doing that, the two doctors were speaking to one another.“W-what do you want?” the younger doctor demanded, his voice trembling lightly. At this, the older man snapped.“What do I want?! Rickey, you betrayed me! You made me end up like this! Because of you, I got fired, and my wife divorced me! Now everyone looks down on me because I lost my license!”Hearing this, the young doctor, Rickey, f
Chapter 7- The First Venture
Public HospitalDand CityMay 5thYear 2020Calvin stayed in the hospital for a few more days so the doctors could monitor his condition, and his rapid recovery surprised them. Some began to wonder whether Martha had hired an Elementalist doctor to treat him with their abilities, given how quickly his body was healing compared to a normal patient. They ran several checks on him, and in the end, he was cleared for discharge. In the days following the rooftop incident, Rickey came to visit Calvin daily, and the young doctor’s friendly demeanour quickly made Martha warm up to him.Calvin also didn’t mind having Rickey around, and with little to do whenever Martha wasn’t present, he started to look forward to the doctor’s visits. On the day of his discharge, Rickey came by and escorted him and Martha out, even calling a taxi for them back to their apartment. They lived in an old high-density housing district of Dand City, in a one-bedroom apartment. The monthly rent wasn’t high due to the
Chapter 8- Elemental Stone Gambling
There were markets where people sold Artifacts, items recovered from ruins and special pocket spaces scattered across the land known as ‘Rifts’.A large portion of these 'Artifacts', due to the nature of their origin, were coated in faint elemental energy, which often made it difficult to tell whether they truly held special abilities or were simply ordinary items that had absorbed too much elemental energy without proper appraisal or analysis.Because of this, it was easy for counterfeit artifacts to appear, with people coating them in elemental energy using real artifacts or elemental tools, then selling them to unsuspecting buyers at outrageous prices. This district contained both shops and markets selling genuine and fake artifacts, but unlike reputable businesses that would not want to be caught dead with even a single fake, the open markets were filled with far more counterfeits than originals.Buying artifacts from the open markets carried a high risk, and there was an unspoken
Chapter 9- A Disappointed Winner
As soon as Calvin got to the machine, he heard a loud voice from the front of the line.“What?! Not a single one had an elemental stone! Impossible!”The machine operator continued packing away the cracked ores in silence, placing the empty fragments into separate containers with practised ease. After a moment, he looked up and asked the man, “Do you want to sell the cracked ores or take them with you? The company will buy them back for half price.”The man clicked his tongue in irritation, clearly frustrated, but with the guards standing nearby watching him, he couldn’t act out. After a moment, he reluctantly nodded and muttered that he’d sell them. The line moved forward, and Calvin watched the elementalist pass by. The man wore a disgruntled expression, clearly annoyed at the money he had just lost.As he stepped aside, his eyes drifted back toward the display platforms, lingering on the remaining ores
Chapter 10- An Unexpected Intervention
Calvin got up and continued walking, taking long detours through crowded areas and glancing at reflective surfaces to see who else was following him.Eventually, he decided to head into an alleyway with very few people, and the moment he entered, a group of four men rushed out from the main street and immediately surrounded him.‘Oh, only two were E-Rank elementalists? Guess sensing their actual levels from a distance is a bit hard for the current me.’While Calvin had those idle thoughts, the few people in the alleyway scattered, having no desire to get involved in what was about to happen.“Brat! Why the hell were you moving around so much?! You wasted our time!”The familiar gambler immediately shouted, his nostrils flaring with anger and releasing faint traces of steam. As Calvin calmly noted that small detail, the second of the four, a man with dyed blonde hair and piercings, stepped forward and spoke.“Look, kid. We know you made a lot of money selling that elemental stone earli
