Chapter 21 : A Golden opportunity needs a Golden appearance isn't it?
Jaxen knew he had to get stronger if he wished to compete against the top elites at the National Hunter Academy. His sister, Lara, was finally receiving the highest level of medical treatment due to his agreement with Investigator Bill. Bill had kept his end of the bargain, but it meant Jaxen had to deliver on his. There was another issue weighing on his mind. Jaxen had already been involved in two major incidents that required the intervention of high-ranking officials. Anymore could lead to overwhelming suspicion from the authorities. He needed to lay low, but he also needed to grind. Normally, the Hunter Association dealt with assigning and allocating newly appeared dungeons to the highest-bidding guilds. However, their jurisdiction wasn't unlimited. The Greyzone was a notorious, underground area known for illegal activities, black markets, and rogue awakeners. Minor F, E, and D-Rank gates frequently appeared in these lawless parts. Unlike the clean streets of Horizon City,
chapter 22: The sunken catacombs
The day of the raid arrived. Jaxen’s golden pair of daggers and clock-designed mask were completely ready. He was fully prepared for his first raid under his new alias, "Chronos". Deep within the lawless Greyzone, an unregulated D-Rank dungeon gate buzzed with unstable energy. Jaxen registered with a sketchy underground broker using the alias "Chronos." Wearing a black and gold mask with a subtle clock design, he could safely grind for stats and earn money without drawing the attention of the Hunter’s Association. But his plans for a quiet, anonymous raid shattered the moment the broker started organizing the hunters. Because most Greyzone dungeons lacked structure, the broker divided the twenty raiders into smaller, four-man cells to cover different areas of the dungeon simultaneously. "You, mask boy," the broker barked, pointing a finger at Jaxen. "You're a scout, right? You're with Cell Three. Get moving." Jaxen turned toward his assigned group, and his blood turned cold.
Chapter 23: The Mana - Eater Below.
The fall felt endless. After tumbling through a suffocating tunnel of freezing muck, the vacuum suddenly released its grip. Jaxen slammed hard into a shallow pool of water, the impact knocking the wind right out of his lungs. He rolled over immediately, splashing into the dark current as he forced himself onto his knees. Striking a low-tier light crystal from his utility belt, the faint glow illuminated a massive, pitch-black cavern. The ceiling above was jagged with wet stalactites, and the floor was a wide, subterranean lake that stretched into the shadows. "Damn it... my leg!" Garret’s voice echoed through the cavern, followed by the heavy, metallic clanking of his armor. A few yards away, the former captain was struggling to stand. The dense mud from the upper floor had jammed the gears of his robotic prosthetic leg, making it spark weakly against the freezing water. Before Jaxen could even offer a fake hand to help, the water in the center of the cavern began to churn v
Chapter 24: A death sentence. The bait and the blade .
The warning flashed across his vision like a death sentence **[Hindsight Bias Has Been Temporarily Deactivated.]** **[Any fatal injury received will result in Permanent Death.]** Jaxen had grown so accustomed to the system's safety net that he'd almost forgotten what real fear felt like. The detached observation of someone watching their own life play out from the outside—that was completely gone. Every nerve in his body felt raw, exposed. The Leech King tilted its head, studying him with clinical curiosity. Its humanoid form shifted in the dim light, black leeches writhing beneath its skin like muscles made of worms. "Your energy... is fading," it said, its layered voice echoing off the cavern walls. "Are you already empty?" Jaxen pushed himself off the stone wall, ignoring the sharp ache in his ribs. His left eye throbbed where the mana burn had singed his skin, blurring his peripheral vision on that side. He blinked away the sting, forcing his right eye to do all the wo
Chapter 25 : Chronos .
Jaxen walked out of the jagged dungeon gate, carrying Garret’s massive, armored body over his shoulder. Initially, he had planned to leave the man to rot in the mud. However, with the dungeon’s boss officially dead, the unstable gate was bound to collapse sooner or later. Even though Garret had been fired from his high-ranking position, a hunter who once held deep ties with a powerhouse like the Iron Vanguard Guild going missing would trigger a massive, unwanted investigation. That was the last thing Jaxen needed. He couldn't afford to have high-ranking scouts sniffing around the Sunken Catacombs, tracing steps back to his true identity. The other casual guild members who had gone to clear the separate, safer chambers of the dungeon were already waiting outside. This being a standard D-Rank raid, it hadn't taken them much time to finish up their respective paths. Seeing that none of them had encountered anything dangerous, the gathered hunters all assumed that Garret’s vanguar
Chapter 26 : The wheels of fate are turning.
**[System Notification: Fate deviation has reached 16%.]** **[All attributes have been updated.]** * **Strength:** 66 *(Intermediate C-Rank entry)* * **Agility:** 76 *(Advanced C-Rank entry)* * **Perception:** 51 *(C-Rank entry)* * **Intelligence:** 42 *(D-Rank entry)* * **[Total Attribute Rank: Intermediate C-Rank]** --- "Intermediate, huh? At this rate, I should reach advanced C-Rank in no time. At a level like that, I could probably take down one of those iron-hide orcs completely by myself without even needing a rewind." The system notification flashed across Jaxen’s face as he lay flat on his back on his squeaky, foldable bed. It had been two days since the chaotic D-Rank dungeon raid in the Greyzone. After spending forty-eight hours resting and assessing his growth, Jaxen finally felt partially content with the strength he had acquired to enter the hunter academy. Still, the sheer physical fatigue hummed through his muscles. Every single turn, every sligh
Chapter 27: The Hunter academy
After handing over his enrollment documents to the main administrative office, Jaxen was directed toward the residential sector of the campus. He navigated his way through the winding, manicured stone pathways, quietly taking in his new surroundings. Everywhere he went, eyes glared at him. Whether it was intense curiosity or underlying resentment, Jaxen couldn't quite tell, nor did he care what his fellow students were thinking. After everything that had happened in the Greyzone, his mind was entirely focused on finally getting some rest. His assigned quarters were small, consisting of two identical beds, two closets, and two compact desks. It was obvious from a single glance that this was a shared room. Jaxen set his duffel bag on the empty bed and began to unpack. He laid out a few sets of ordinary, everyday clothes he had purchased using his earnings from the D-Rank raid, along with his new mid-tier daggers. The weapons were sleek, finished in a muted silver-grey color. He want
Chapter 28 : A cubical Anomaly.
Jaxen stood at the center of the evaluation arena, surrounded by dozens of other cadets waiting for the tests to begin. A middle-aged woman with sharp red hair walked onto the raised platform stage to announce the rules. At first, most of the students didn't seem to notice her presence, continuing to chat and look around the massive colosseum. "Kids nowadays have no respect for their elders," she muttered. Suddenly, she released a massive burst of raw mana. The sudden pressure sent an involuntary shiver down everyone's spine, instantly silencing the arena. *Damn,* Jaxen thought, bracing his legs as the heavy aura washed over him. *Judging by that mana output, she has to be at least a B-Rank hunter. So even the instructors at this school are seasoned veterans?* The woman took a step forward, looking down at the crowd. "My name is Karen, and I'll be your primary instructor," she announced, her voice carrying an absolute weight of authority. "But first, some words from the hea
Chapter 29 : Shadows and peers
When Jaxen woke up the next morning, the room was empty. Just like the day before, Peter was already gone, leaving only a neatly folded piece of notebook paper on Jaxen's desk. *Good luck on your test today,* the note read in sharp, hurried handwriting. *Wish me luck on mine as well.* "He’s one odd guy, isn't he?" Jaxen muttered quietly to himself, tossing the paper into the small trash bin. "Is he seriously going to keep doing this every single day?" After taking a quick shower to wash off the lingering grogginess, Jaxen made his way down to the campus cafeteria. He grabbed a simple, heavy breakfast of protein and complex carbs to fuel his body, eating quickly and keeping his head down. As soon as he finished, he went straight to the Crucible arena, arriving a full thirty minutes before the scheduled evaluation time. Today was the combat simulation phase, and he wanted to give his body an early, proper warm-up to ensure his movements wouldn't stiffen up under pressure. To his u
Chapter 30 : Back into the grayzone.
Out of the original 426 applicants, only 106 remained. These 106 were divided into three different groups based on their grades. Jaxen was allocated to the B-tier group. For a commoner, this was very impressive. Even though Jaxen hadn’t used 100% of his actual ability, he still knew there were students here who outscaled him in almost every aspect. He remembered the deal given to him by the broker from the Grayzone ruins. Seeing that classes would officially begin in a week’s time, Jaxen believed this would be a great opportunity to meet up with the broker and see what kind of dungeons he had in place. As soon as it hit nighttime and almost everyone was asleep, Jaxen quietly got up, trying not to wake Peter. He loaded his golden daggers and mask into a backpack and climbed out through the window. “System, activate Chrono Veil.”
