Chapter 41: The High Plateau Adhesion
When Locomotive Unit Two left the assembly bays of the Sector Twenty-Four foundry complex things changed a lot. Behind the train the rails did not go through channels or flat plains anymore. The western frontier went up immediately into a broken ridge line that marked the start of the Great Western Plateau. This plateau is a shelf of solid granite that is three thousand feet above the volcanic basins. It is swept by cold winds from the northern ice fields.Valen stood on the platform of the train holding the heavy iron brake wheel. The train had just cleared the yard switches. The new steel rails were low on the twelve Vanguard Carriers. They were dark. Smelled like the slow-cooling ash beds where they were made. The total weight of the train was over eleven hundred tons. This would test the engines ability to stick to the rails on the incline ahead. The grade we are going up is steeper than anything we saw in the mountain pass Marcus said from the engine cab. We are going up one foot
Chapter 42: Sunder Canyon Cantilever
The construction crews finally reached the edge of the ground after moving the tracking line past the Western exit switches of Sector Twenty-Nine. For ninety-eight miles they had been following the basalt beds and clay plains but at the boundary marker of Sector Thirty the ground dropped away into a huge crack in the earth known as the Sunder Canyon. This canyon was two thousand feet deep and four hundred and twenty yards wide.Valen stood at the edge of the masonry wall his boots on the concrete foundation tier. Below him the wind screamed through the rock gap carrying the smell of boiled water and sulfur. The steel rails ended abruptly at the edge of the void. The old plans showed that a big steel arch bridge was supposed to be built Kael said, unrolling some technical papers.. The main parts were never delivered. If we want to get our trains across this gap we need a cantilever truss system made from our new nickel-steel sections. Can the machine shops at Sector Twenty-Nine make th
Chapter 43: Caldera Descents
The machines that carry heavy minerals in Sector Thirty-Four needed to be fixed. These machines had been sitting still for a time and their wheels were stuck. Kael walked under the machine to check it. He used a lamp to see the wheels and the big steel frame. The wheels looked good. The brakes were stuck because of old mineral deposits. We cannot let these machines move until we fix the brakes Kael told Valen. The brakes are stuck. If we try to move the machines they will break. Valen said they would use oil to fix the brakes. Tor, bring the oil line from the locomotive Valen said. We will connect it to the machine. Make the brakes work again. We have to fix twenty-four machines before morning.Tors team moved in to connect the oil line. They wrapped the line around the machines frame with care. When Marcus turned on the oil it made a loud hissing sound and white steam came out. The old mineral deposits. The brakes started working again. The machines were ready to move.LOGISTICAL FLE
Chapter 44: The Great White Void
The people in charge had to redo the math for the brakes on the train because they added twenty-four mineral carriers. These carriers were really heavy weighing eighty tons each. During the part of the day it got a lot colder on the upper plateau and the water inside the air lines turned into ice. Kael was standing on the car of the train checking the space between the valves to make sure the air could move through the train without any problems.Kael told Valen that they could not move the train yet because they needed to add air to the engine. The train was too heavy now. If they did not add more air the brakes would not work properly. Valen decided to add an air compressor to the train. Tor was told to bring a steam pump that they had found in a old turbine vault. They put the pump on the front of the train. It worked really well. The pressure in the brake line went up. The brakes were ready to use. The train was now ready to move. It was a really big and powerful machine.LOGISTIC
Chapter 45: The Asymmetric Border
We left the rock-cut sanctuaries of Sector Forty-Four. Started the high-altitude part of our journey. This was the part where we had to be very careful with our freight assets. The line went out from the big concrete blast walls into a strong eastern mountain wind. This wind was carrying a lot of silt that was scratching against Locomotive Unit Two with a dry continuous hiss. The twenty-four recovered eighty-ton mineral carriers were making a lot of noise behind the engine. Their wheels were settling into a rhythm as the train began its slow ascent toward the unknown part of Sector Forty-Five.Kael was inside the corridor of the forward tool wagon checking the continuous readings from the primary axle sensors. The addition of the heavy-pattern vehicles from the Sector Forty-Four vaults had changed the balance of the fleet. This required a re-evaluation of the thermal lubrication schedules. At these altitudes the standard paraffin oil was separating into a thick waxy sediment. This sed
Chapter 46: Thermal Inversion Horizon
The weather at Outpost Seven was changing fast. Noa saw that the air pressure was dropping. This was not a small change in the weather. It was a shift in the weather pattern in the north. The cold air from the region was moving down to Sector Forty-Seven. It was moving fast.Within three hours the temperature dropped a lot. It went down by twenty-two degrees. This was very cold. The wind stopped blowing. The cold air was still. The moisture in the rocks froze. This caused noises as the ice expanded.Inside the repository Marcus was getting Locomotive Unit Two ready. He was putting a snow-plow on the front of the train. This plow was eleven tons heavy. It was made of steel. The plow could clear snow, up to seven feet deep.Marcus had to be very careful. The plow had to be put on right. If it was not the train could derail. Kael was helping Marcus. He told the workers to keep the crane chains tight. The bolts had to be put in right.Tor was working hard. He was sweating despite the cold
Chapter 47: The Rift Alignment
The weather forecast said it would be foggy at Outpost Eight.. It was. A thick fog came in during the part of the day. It was so cold that it froze away when it hit the metal parts of the train yard. This kind of fog is called frost. It covered everything in the yard with a layer of ice.The ice was a problem for Locomotive Unit Two. It had just arrived at the yard. Was frozen solid. The boiler was okay because it was insulated.. The valves and brakes were stuck. Marcus used a tool to melt the ice. He had to be careful not to apply much heat at once.Kael was helping Marcus. He told him to keep moving the tool so the metal would not get damaged. If the tool stayed in one place for long it could warp the metal. They needed to get the train moving again. Tor was going to bring down some cargo from the upper quarries. The team worked on the train for an hour. They used a mixture to lubricate the moving parts. The train was working again. Marcus tested it. Everything seemed fine.LOCOMOTI
Chapter 48: Permafrost Core Integration
The machines at Outpost Nine measured a drop in air pressure. This meant the cold air from the north was coming. It happened during the night shift change. The wind. The temperature dropped a lot. It got really cold. The air was so cold that the water in the air turned into ice crystals. These crystals fell on the train tracks at Mile Marker Four Hundred and Seventy-Eight. They covered the tracks with a layer of ice powder. This made it hard for the train to move.Marcus saw that the train was having trouble moving. The wheels were spinning,. The train was not going forward. The machine was making a noise. The wheels were grinding against the track. They were not getting a good grip. This was because of the ice powder on the tracks. Kael told the crew to use the sand to help the train get a better grip. The sand was. Sprayed onto the tracks. This helped the train to move. The crew also used brushes to clear the ice from the tracks. These brushes were attached to the front of the train
Chapter 49: Great Rift Viaduct Phase
The weather instruments at Outpost Ten showed that the air pressure was changing. This change meant that the cold air was now moving down from the top. The strong winds that were blowing across the top stopped. Now the air was still and very cold. This cold air made the water on the steel rails freeze. The ice that formed was very thin. It was a problem for the train.Marcus started getting the train ready at Mile Marker Five Hundred and Seventy-Eight. He told his workers to take the part of the train off Locomotive Unit Two. They had to take out four pins that had gotten stuck. The workers used hammers and hot oil to get the pins out. Then they put a wedge-shaped part on the front of the train. This part was made of steel and it helped the train move through the snow. The new part on the train changed how it looked and how it moved. The front of the train was now longer and heavier. The workers made sure that the part was secure and that it would not get stuck in the snow. They also
Chapter 50: Far Western Verge Expansion
The weather station at Mile Marker Six Hundred and Seventy-Five is now part of the network. This means the tracking office can plan the movement of the heavy mineral trains without worrying about the local weather changes. The air pressure in the western basin is still dropping at a steady rate. This tells us that the big storm is still stuck over the northern glacier shelf. So the path for the trains is clear for an advance to the Sector Fifty-Seven logistics boundary.Marcus is making sure Locomotive Unit Two is working well. He is using the good quality coal from the silos to keep the steam pressure stable. The new axle sets made by the Sector Fifty-Six lathes have really improved the machines performance. The tracking head is moving out from the monitoring outpost. It is going across an area with dark volcanic rocks that were broken by old earthquakes. To keep the train tracks level Valen told the excavation crews to cut a shelf into the rock face. They are working fast. Making go
