It didn't take long to appear in front of the door. I flicked the machete, tightening my grip on it.“It's time to draw blood.” I said, not knowing if it was the feeling of control speaking or the disturbing hive in my soul.Either way, I didn't care. No one would trample over me again. Before they could, I'd stand over their freaking head.“You brought a stone?” Jaxen chuckled, looking at the rock in my hand.“Yeah, can't have my weapon failing on me when it's time to hack.” I smiled back in response.“I hope you are ready? These guys don't look like they are ready for diplomacy.”Flicking off the safety of the rifle in his hand, Jaxen turned to me.“Just don't try to hold me back.”“Of course ‘Commander.’” I smiled back on him, while sharpening the blade of my machete.[Ding!][Weapon Sharpening Stone Activated.][Sharpeness +2][Sharpeness +2][Durability +2]I narrowed my gaze on the machete, running it on the stone. My mind went to the army gathered around there. There was no way I

Without giving me a response, Jaxen rose to his feet, slamming the machine into his rifle.“Okay, that's good.” I said, and I swiped my machete against the wall. It created the sharp sounds of sparks as the steel hit the sharp part of the wall.If I wanted to get a blind seeker’s attention, the best way was through the disturbance of the other senses. The dark swirly bug eyes turned to me, and it narrowed.“Yeah, come at me.” The words left my lips, and I leapt forward. With insane speed, the seeker shot towards my direction, a shrill roar leaving its mouth.“Invest 100 SP each into strength and speed.” I gritted out, and the surge of energy moved through me, and the muscles in my legs tightened. It felt like energy was going to pour through me, and I gritted my teeth, tightening the hold on the machete.“Jaxen. Bring this bastard down!”And the sounds of gunfire filled the entire cave.A few inches away from my face, the monster drew down, face going into the floor as it lost its fo

The pathway got slimmer as we rushed forward. This time, Jaxen was leading the way, and we could only rely on his hyper awareness.“How far? Can you sense it now?” My voice came out, while I moved behind, holding tightly on to his hand. This way, he could easily focus on the direction we were heading to.[50 SP consumed.]The notification came up and I understood that he had found exactly what we were looking for.“Get your machete ready.” Jaxen's voice came out, and I nodded. The weapon materialized in my hands. The deafening roar shook the area and I was not about to let a stray monster destroy my home.“Release me, Commander. I'd take the lead this time and I want you to cover my back.”“You sure about this, Mateo.” Jaxen frowned.“Sure as I can ever be.” With that, he released me, and slowed down, allowing me to move forward.“Dang these things.” I said, removing the machines in my chest and tossing them to Jaxen. “You need it more than I do, Commander.”“But you are the one who k

Relying partly on Jaxen’s hyper-awareness and sheer effort, we trailed the intruders to the very heart of the tunnel passage. Fuck, those trespassers are super-fast. We aren’t giving up anyway, no matter how deep they surge into the cave. Now, the footsteps were clearer. I could make a proper count, judging by the difference in size and pattern of each footprint. Four were those of soldiers, probably guarding the two other footprints with an awkward pattern. But why the heck are they so keen on surging deeper into the canyon? For fuck’s sake, I’m out here trailing their shitty movement when they should be seeking me out. What are they fleeing... or what the heck are they looking for?[Ding…]“What now?” I grunted, irritated by the sudden pop-up of the blue screen in my sight. Swearing didn’t put it off.[Warning…]Gosh, I stopped. Jaxen stopped beside me, his gesture posing all the questions his lips would have uttered.[Anti-mutation weapon detected…]“What do you mean?” I asked

“Get him!” the lead soldier, a hardened red-beret commander in tough military gear, hollered at his men, pointing at what seemed to be where my human anchor was probably grappling with an enemy soldier. Acting some distance from me seemed to be taking a huge toll on Jaxen.I sprang from my hideout and lunged at the soldier with the launcher before he could launch the RPG. I pounced on him, knocking him to the ground, but the impact didn’t stop the rocket from launching off. Rather, it helped it. The thud was loud as it hit a target. Wrong or right, I don’t know. The racket it caused blocked my ears. Even the soldier on the floor wriggled in pain and confusion. The commander’s command rattled just seconds after the explosion. He’s bent on having his men slaughter Jaxen. I doubt they would be able to do that, but I felt he might need me right now.I rose to my knees, brushing dust off my face as I looked into the blurry space. The explosion had covered the expanse with white dust, offer

I braced myself to attack the man currently manning and aiming the machine gun at us, but as I closed in, along with Jaxen, who was clearly yearning to teach the fella a lesson, I realized the fool couldn't use the machine gun. He was touching every part of it, clicking everything that clicked. He was definitely looking for the trigger. We got to him, and before he could plead for his worthless life, I grabbed him and tossed him away from the machine gun. He landed squarely on the floor, clutching his chest. Jaxen dismantled the machine gun and broke it on his knee. I watched him toss it away like it had not been the same tool that pinned us both down and nearly turned the tide of the battle to the red-beret commander.I lowered my gaze to the floor where the commander had supposedly fallen, but he was not there. I saw the trail of blood, alerting me that the machete did hit its mark. But the mark it hit was probably hiding somewhere, waiting for us to lower our guard so he would str

I woke up shortly after my mutation level spiked to eighty percent without warning. Jaxen had realized I was mutating without warning and rushed in to help me. Placing his hand on me, I felt a rush of relief and collapsed into a quick nap as the system dinged in my head. Now, I feel strong, like I had swum out of a river. Jaxen was sitting by the corner with his head bowed in rest against his crossed arms. The strange device was sitting on a long stool by one of the tables. The prisoner was nowhere in sight, and the silence here was so heavy I felt it press down on my skin. I sat up and looked around me. One thing I just can’t explain was what caused the sudden mutation spike. I was not overwhelmed with adrenaline, I wasn’t in the middle of a fight, neither was I worried about anything. But it just happened.I needed an explanation, maybe from the system itself, but the system didn’t budge. I cleared my throat to draw Jaxen’s attention, but he was probably as tired as I had been earli

Silence. The bitch-ass dude isn’t saying a thing. He’s just shaking his goddamn head like a freaking NPC, saying he doesn’t know what the goddamn order is. For fuck’s sake, this dude talks like he was drawn into doing something without knowing who sent him and what the something is.“You don’t know the order?” I asked, nearly biting his face off. It would be a waste of time if I kept tossing questions at him because he wasn’t going to say anything. I clenched my fists to throw a jab at his pussy-ass face, but something slipped into my mind.Maybe if I showed him the device, he would remember something about their mission down there. Or if I talked about the pentagon object, he might remember something.I sat back on the seat, looking him in the face. He bowed his head, not uttering a word or pleading to be released. Maybe he already concluded what his fate was going to be. Well, I don’t intend to waste him so fast. I want to obtain any useful piece of information he could be harboring

Unauthorized movement? But we took care of every one of those boys. How come we have an unauthorized movement coming from the same cave we had taken good care of?Maybe we didn’t do a clean job. Maybe a mimic had found its way in. I can’t just tell what must have brought the movement, but I ditched my bottle of milk and biscuits and stood up, searching for my machete. Jaxen raised his brows in question, holding his bottle of beer in a firm grip and munching tuna and beans.“My machete,” I said, worried he might not have retrieved it from the cave after calming down my mutation spike, however way he did it. He shrugged, picked it up from beside his stool, and passed it to me.“Why are you agitated?” he asked as I took the machete from him.[Sharpening stone activated…]I sharpened my machete with the stone while ignoring his question and wondering what could be making the so-called movement through the passage. Jaxen dropped his bottle of beer on the desk, dragged his gun up from the f

Bear Cat was badly damaged from our previous expedition, but not entirely destroyed. Jaxen managed to weld the outer parts together, then, to make it more formidable, I assisted him in welding sharp pieces of metal garbage to the massive protectors shielding the front and rear of the vehicle, to make it too lethal for zombies to leap at it either from the rear or from the front.I pity the ones we would run into though. They would regret breathing in the gas. I felt my dark humor creeping in. It’s wrong to muse over what would happen to zombies when they play stupid, but I couldn’t help the smile that broke out on my face.Soon, we both hopped into the vehicle. Bear Cat’s engine was still as active as ever, and we had loaded it with enough fuel, even keeping a reserve in the trunk. Jaxen turned on the ignition, while I hooked my seat belt, waiting for him to pull off, knowing fully well that the drive won’t ever be a smooth one as the roads would be so jagged from the burnout and all
