[Tier Five Seeker on Rampage…][Attack before it summons the horde…][Bonus: 200 SP]I rose from the floor where I had landed, my eyes itching badly as I clenched my fists, ready to face the seeker with my hands now that the machete had been knocked away and Jaxen looked like he was knocked unconscious at the other corner of the Bear Cat.The seeker growled again. I shot it a mocking smirk. If knocking me into the wall was all it could do, then it’s a lazy-ass seeker. I would teach it the lesson of its ugly life. I lunged at it before it came for me and crashed into it. It struck with its claws, but I blocked with my elbows, then it revealed the next weapon in its arsenal. It opened its fang-filled mouth wide enough to swallow a man’s head, but I dodged the attack and, with the speed of light, I twisted its claws and tossed it into the wall. It landed on the wall. I tasted something bitter in my mouth. I felt something rising in my throat. My veins were beginning to bulge beneath my s

The sniper rifle materialized in a split second. I have not used such a high-grade weapon before, so I passed it to Jaxen, whom I believed was quite experienced in using such precision weapons. He accepted the expensive gift and cocked it with steady hands, then turned to the direction the so-called mutated shambler was coming from.Unlike regular shamblers, the giant mutated shambler wasn’t exactly slow. Its size aided its movement, so even though it wasn’t trudging at us, it was covering so much distance just by shifting its massive legs.“Guess we should get Bear Cat out of the way,” Jaxen said, peering through the sniper. “That bitch-ass zombie looks like it’s coming for us right now. It looks like it’s ready to give chase.”Ignoring Jaxen’s warning, I walked over to Bear Cat just to catch a clear glimpse of the giant. The floor was already vibrating as it covered more and more distance. Then, as though it had seen me, it crouched to the floor, and like a goddamn ball, it started

The webbed seeker’s mouth pried open, revealing rows of sharp teeth as it growled victoriously, maybe thinking it had secured a meal for itself and its fellows. But not so fast. Jaxen swung an arm from the floor and struck its waist, turning it away from me.It raised a claw at him and brought it down in a whiff, but he didn’t let it land. He caught it mid-air and seized it with his legs hooked around its goddamn upper abdomen, giving me the perfect chance to attack from the rear with a punch that damaged the zombie’s occiput. It struggled with Jaxen, who held it put, while I rushed back to Bear Cat, secured my machete and, with a single whiff of it, the sharp edge landed on the seeker’s head and cut it into equal halves. The growl stopped, the tunnel went silent, and its smelly ichor poured mostly on Jaxen, who had pinned it with his legs and arms, while the rest smeared onto my clothes. Now, we smell the same. Disgusting.[Tier 3 Seeker Eliminated…][Bonus: 200 SP][Spiked knuckles

No!I swear to the good Lord, I don’t want to fight goons. I didn’t ask to fight them. They attacked us first, and now, even Jaxen was ready to turn off the engine and come out with his gun. That minimart with apocalypse-grade reinforcement seemed to have something we need. It might have the fuel. And it surely has the engineer who reinforced it. Exactly what we were out for. I glanced at Jaxen’s face. He was cool. Still holding the steering wheel. But he should have moved if he swears he doesn’t want to teach those goons a lesson.“What do you think?” I asked him.“What do you want to hear?” he retorted, giving me a side-eye.The stones landed over and over again, hitting Bear Cat. Who the heck made them feel they could fight Bear Cat? What the heck gave them the guts to throw stones at us? The one with the gun aimed it at us. I waited for him to shoot. And yes. He shot. The fucker shot at Bear Cat.The hum of the vehicle now felt like it was calling us to go deal with those goons, e

Three freaking shots in the air and we didn’t see who was shooting. The shots didn’t seem like they were meant for us. Whoever had fired them must have used them as warning shots, maybe to scare us away from the man we were taunting, or worse, scare us out of the gas station. We looked around us to find the shooter, or better, to know where the shots were coming from. We didn’t see anyone till we looked at the minimart. The door was wide open, and a young lady, petite, wiry, and perpetually covered in grease. In fact, she looked like she had been working on something greasy all her life. She was wielding an engine with an exhaust attached to it.The engine and the exhaust were bigger than her. She touched something on the grease-dripping engine and the exhaust spat out black smoke that sounded like gunshots.“It’s the exhaust, motherfuckers!” she screamed, lots of disdain on her face like we didn’t just do her a favor by whooping the asses of those goons and sending them fleeing fr

After acquiring all the scrap metal and engines in Ruby’s minimart, we all boarded Bear Cat and Jaxen took off. Ruby slipped two earpieces into her ears and relaxed her head on the headrest, her oversized glasses still hanging on the bridge of her nose.Peter Pan, on the other hand, kept nursing his wound by running his middle finger around the bandage on his thigh. It irritated me, so I looked away from him and focused on the windscreen. The drive was quiet. We weren’t done scouting for supplies. We needed more. My space warehouse had initially dropped to seventy-five percent, but with the scrap metal taken from the minimart, it increased to eighty-two percent. We needed one thing we hadn’t gotten yet. Gas for Bear Cat. The gas station we picked Ruby up from was empty. No gas reserve. Also, we needed to take more people home so that work would begin as soon as possible in Hawthorne.“Is that the way to your place?” Peter asked, his voice hoarse. “Are you part of Sky’s gang?”I turned

We had every reason to lure those pussy ass jeeps into the tunnel where the seekers had gathered like someone threw a seeker wedding party in there, but Jaxen’s hyper awareness took hold of him. He already knew what would become of us or…let’s say the world around us, if we fed the seekers. No matter what. You don’t feed seekers to get fat. You don’t feed shamblers. And you don’t pray for your worst enemies to fall prey to the mimics. That’s quite kind of us. But those jeeps showed up in the side mirror. They were chasing us with all their might.I don’t blame them anyways. We had snuffed the life out of their buddies without thinking twice. So, they resorted to chasing us without thinking twice. Maybe someone should just tell them that we had no choice but to defend our asses when their buddies gave us a chase. And we needed the fuel. Yes, the fuel we tapped from the jeeps. We needed it so much. Maybe this time around, we would need not just the fuel in the four jeeps that just poppe

The heat hit before the sound did.Bear Cat's back end lifted off the asphalt like something had punched it from underneath, and then the boom caught up, a wall of pressure that cracked the windshield into a spiderweb and threw Ruby's head into the seat in front of her. I grabbed the door handle just to have something to hold onto. My whole body slammed sideways into Jaxen's shoulder."Nest's popped," Jaxen said, voice flat like he was reading the weather off a clipboard. He wrestled the wheel and got us back on four wheels, tires screaming against the cracked road.[Warning][Nearby Tier 5 seeker nest ruptured][Estimated hostiles: 40+][Recommend immediate evacuation]"No shit," I muttered, watching the Scanner drop pin after pin after pin across my mental map, faster than I could actually process them. Forty of them. Maybe more, the system had stopped bothering to count individually and just started throwing up a mass instead, a red bloom spreading out from the rupture point like i

The underpass swallowed us whole, and for a second the world went black, just the roar of Bear Cat's engine bouncing off concrete walls and the wet, chittering sounds of things that hadn't seen daylight in a while. Then Jaxen's headlights caught the wreckage. The jeeps. Or what was left of them. We'd left them behind not twenty minutes ago, and now the seekers had found them first, a churning knot of gray bodies tearing into the corpses we'd made, into the fuel, into anything that smelled like meat or blood or gasoline."Oh no," Ruby whispered. "Oh no, oh no, no.""They're feasting," I said, watching the pile of them through the cracked windshield. Dozens, maybe more than what had come out of the tunnel, all packed shoulder to shoulder around the ruined jeeps like it was Thanksgiving and someone forgot to tell me. "That's good. That buys us time.""That's not good, Mateo, that is the opposite of good." Ruby's voice climbed an octave with every word. "There's a hundred of them between

The scrape of claws on metal is a sound you don't forget once you've heard it. It's the sound of something deciding you're dinner and being right about the timeline."It's on!" Ruby shrieked, twisting in her seat to stare at the back window, where a gray shape had its claws hooked into the tailgate and was hauling itself up, jaw working, drool or ichor or whatever passed for spit in that thing stringing down in long ropes."I know," Jaxen said, and I realized he'd known before Ruby said a word. Of course he had. Hyper-Awareness didn't sleep on the job even when the rest of him wanted to.He didn't slow down. If anything he sped up, weaving Bear Cat through the wreckage littering the service road, trying to shake it loose the old-fashioned way. It didn't work. The thing had claws built for exactly this, hooked and vicious, and every jolt just seemed to make it climb faster, dragging itself along the roof now, upside down, moving like something out of a nightmare that hadn't gotten the
