Chapter 11
Bruce looked down at the assassin. Mike was still alive. His chest moved up and down as he took shallow, weak breaths. But he looked completely different. His hair, which had been jet black, had suddenly turned totally white. His skin was pale and covered in deep wrinkles. Without his mana center to keep his body strong and young, Mike had instantly aged twenty years. He was just a weak, old man now. He was a mundane. He would never be able to cast a shadow-stitch again. He would never be able to sneak through the dark. He would never be an assassin again. Mike slowly opened his eyes. He looked at his own hands. They were trembling and covered in liver spots. He tried to summon a tiny bit of magic, just a single spark of shadow, but nothing happened. The well inside him was completely dry. It was gone forever. "My magic," Mike whispered, a tear rolling down his wrinkled cheek. "It's gone. I am... I am nothing.""You are what you always were, Mike," Bruce said coldly. "Nothing."Bru
Chapter 12
Bruce looked down at the wooden floorboards. The True Sight allowed him to see right through the wood, through the stone ceiling below, and down into the deep structure of the Iron-Heart Estate. Before, he had only seen a small golden pulse near the bed. That pulse had been the hidden compartment containing his mother's diary and her lock of hair. Now, with his mana center expanded and powerful, Bruce could see much deeper. He pushed his vision down, down, down. Past the second floor, past the grand dining hall, past the wine cellars. Suddenly, Bruce gasped. Deep, deep underground, far beneath the foundation of the estate, he saw it. It was a massive web of glowing, golden energy. It looked like a giant root system of a magic tree. The golden energy was flowing through the stone walls, up into the manor, powering the magical defenses, the glowing lights, and the wealth of the Iron-Heart Clan. And in the very center of that golden web was a single, bright, beautiful heart. It was
Chapter 13
Bruce fell into the absolute dark. The heavy stone trapdoor slammed shut high above him with a loud BANG. The sound echoed loudly in the tight space. Bruce was falling down a narrow, vertical shaft. The air rushing past his face was stale and smelled like old dust. For a second, panic gripped his heart. He could still hear the terrible echo of Lady Hestia’s voice bouncing off the stone walls. “...Burn the mother to kill the son... we offer her soul to the Deep Beast!”She was going to kill his mother. After nineteen years of pain, after finally finding out the truth, he was going to be too late. But Bruce was not alone in the dark. Suddenly, massive arms wrapped around his body. They were cold, feeling like polished bone and thick leather. The Ashen Seraph pulled Bruce close to its chest. Whoosh. The Seraph snapped its six giant wings open. The feathers scraped against the sides of the narrow stone chute, shooting sparks of dark silver light into the blackness. The giant wings a
Chapter 14
Bruce looked down at the floor where the bed had been. There was a heavy, square latch set into the stone. It was made of black metal and covered in thick, glowing red symbols. The symbols looked like angry eyes. They were pulsing with a hot, dangerous energy. "A blood-ward," Bruce said, staring at the red symbols. He could feel the heat coming off the latch. It felt like standing too close to a bonfire. "This is high-level magic. It is designed to burn anyone who touches it if they do not have the right blood.""It is a pathetic lock," the Seraph said, stepping up beside Bruce. "Do you wish for me to break it, Master?""No," Bruce said. His eyes narrowed. "I need to save my strength, but I also need to learn how to use this new power. If I rely only on you, I will always be weak."Bruce knelt down on the cold floor. He reached his right hand toward the heavy metal latch. The Brand of the Void on his shoulder began to ache. It was a good ache. It was the feeling of hunger. As Bruce
Chapter 15
"Yes. Long before your clan existed, long before the city of Oakhaven was built, there were others who ruled this land. Ancient beings. Dark kings. They built cities deep underground to hide from the sun. This place is an ancient ruin. A remnant of the Old Times."Bruce touched the rough stone wall. It felt freezing cold, like ice. "So the clan found this ruin and claimed it.""They found it, and they found the machine inside it," the Seraph said. "A machine designed to siphon spiritual energy. But the machine was broken. It required a pure, powerful soul to turn it on. They needed a battery.""My mother," Bruce whispered. His heart ached. "Yes. Your mother possessed a rare, ancient spirit. She was the perfect fuel. The clan locked her in the ruins to power their own wealth. They are like mice, living in the bones of a dead dragon, pretending they are dragons themselves."The truth made Bruce sick to his stomach. His cousin Nicholas acting so proud. Lady Hestia acting so holy and pow
Chapter 16
The Ashen Seraph was aging the doors. It was fast-forwarding time. Thousands of years of rust and decay happened in three seconds. The massive iron spikes crumbled into powder. The thick metal plates cracked and warped. The hinges groaned in agony. "Dust to dust," the Seraph whispered. The angel pushed its hand forward slightly. The massive, twenty-foot-tall wrought-iron doors completely collapsed. They did not fall; they shattered into a million pieces of brown rust and gray ash. The ash blew forward into the dark, carried by a sudden rush of cold wind. The barrier was gone. Destroyed with terrifying casualness. Bruce stared at the pile of rust on the floor. He realized just how much power he had sleeping inside his own soul. If the Seraph could do this to solid iron, what could it do to a human body? "The path is clear, Master," the Seraph said, lowering its hand. It stepped back, bowing its head slightly to let Bruce walk first. Bruce gripped his smoke-blade tightly. He ste
Chapter 17
The Matriarch swung the glowing purple dagger down in a brutal, shining arc, aiming directly for Victoria Thompson’s heart. "NO!" Bruce screamed from the catwalk. But he was too high up. He was too far away. The distance between the metal walkway and the black obsidian platform was hundreds of feet. Bruce could not run fast enough to stop the blade. He could not throw his shadow-spikes that far. Time seemed to slow down. Bruce watched the purple light of the dagger get closer and closer to his mother's pale chest. Then, a massive shadow stepped in front of Bruce. The Ashen Seraph did not panic. The giant angel simply raised its empty left hand and flicked its long, silver-bone fingers. BOOM.A shockwave of solid, black air shot out from the angel's hand. It traveled across the massive cavern faster than a bullet. The black wind hit the obsidian platform exactly half a second before the dagger reached Victoria’s skin. The force of the impact was incredible. It sounded like a bom
Chapter 18
Inside the third vat was an old woman. She had gray hair and a kind, wrinkled face. "Martha," Bruce choked out. He pressed his hands against the cold, wet glass. Martha had been the head cook in the servant's kitchen. When Bruce was a little boy, freezing and starving in the stables, Martha used to sneak him warm bread and bowls of hot soup. She was the only person in the entire estate who had ever shown him kindness. Three years ago, Martha had dropped a very expensive silver plate during a grand dinner. Lady Hestia had been furious. The next morning, the servants were told that Martha had "run away" to the city because she was ashamed. She never ran away. None of them did. Bruce walked down the row. He saw missing commoners. He saw servants who had made small mistakes. He saw minor nobles who had spoken out against Lady Hestia. He saw people who were branded as "heretics" and exiled. They were all here. Hundreds and hundreds of people. They were not dead, but they were not tru
Chapter 19
Before Bruce could take a single step, a terrible sound ripped through the cavern. WROOOOOOOOM!It was a loud, grating horn. It sounded like a dying beast. The sound bounced off the stone walls, shaking the floor. The destruction of the massive wrought-iron doors had finally registered on the catacombs' magical alarm system. Suddenly, the dim, gray crystals on the ceiling turned bright, bloody red. The entire cavern was flooded with flashing red emergency lights. The red fog on the floor began to swirl violently. "Intruder!" a voice boomed over a magical speaker system. "Sector Four breached! Protect the harvest! Kill the intruder!"Bruce spun around, looking for the source of the voice. Along the far walls of the cavern, large stone doors began to slide open. Heavy boots stomped loudly on the stone floor, marching in perfect rhythm. Stomp. Stomp. Stomp.A dozen men marched out of the shadows and stepped into the flashing red light. Bruce’s eyes narrowed. He had lived in the Iro
Chapter 20
The massive steel war hammer came down. It was swung with brutal, terrifying force by the giant Captain of the Dungeon Guards. Crackling green lightning exploded from the head of the hammer. The lightning looked like a wild, angry snake made of pure electricity. It shot straight toward Bruce’s chest, lighting up the dark cavern with a sickly, glowing green light. Time seemed to slow down for Bruce. He could hear the crackle of the lightning. He could smell the burning ozone in the air. He knew he could not dodge. He knew he could not block it with a magical shield. If he fought back the normal way, the clash of magic would demand more power. The Captain’s weapon would just suck more life out of the innocent people sleeping in the glass vats. Bruce could already see the young farmer in the vat next to him twitching in pain as the machine pulled on his soul. "I cannot fight the magic," Bruce thought quickly. "So I have to eat it."Bruce did not step back. He did not raise his Blade
