The ruins of the Hawthorne estate rose from the mist like a skeleton of a forgotten empire. Blackened stone walls, collapsed roofs, and the skeletal remains of what had once been grand towers. The fire had taken everything, the wood, the fabric, the memories. Damian Falcone stood at the edge of the property, his hands clasped behind his back, his red Aevum flickering faintly beneath his skin. He had been standing there for ten minutes, just watching and waiting. "Sir?" One of his enforcers stepped forward, a young man with nervous eyes. "The perimeter is secure. No sign of anyone."Damian didn't respond, he just kept staring at the ruins.He had been to this place once before. Years ago. The training ground was a small clearing in the woods behind the Windsor main house. The grasses were overgrown and wild, but flat enough for practice. Axel had been at it for hours, his palms glowing with blue flame, sweat dripping down his face.He tried to shape the flame into a ball but all he got was a little flickering and then it ended up dead. He tried to extend it into a stream. It sputtered and vanished.He tried to hold it steady for more than thirty seconds. It burned bright for a moment, then collapsed like a dying breath."Again," Mariette said from across the clearing. Her voice was flat, impatient."I can't," Axel said, gasping.
