Chapter 51: Dead Sprint
The tires of the Vanguard rover ate up the broken asphalt of the old highway.Keal held the steering wheel tight with his hand. His left arm was hurt bad and was tied up against his chest. The engine was. The whole vehicle was shaking so much that his teeth were rattling.Outside the windshield the ash storm was like a big grey wall that was moving really fast. It would part for a second before they would smash through the junk on the road. How are they doing there Keal yelled out to the people in the back.In the red light of the back cabin the two medical people were holding on tight to the walls trying not to fall over as the rover turned. No change the main medical person yelled back. Commander Knoxs heartbeat is steady. It is really slow. It is like she is in a sleep. The special metal frame has fixed her bones. And what about the Boss Keal asked, turning the rover to avoid a truck. The medical person looked at Idris Cole. He was lying still. The hurt part of his shoulder had sto
Chapter 52: Steel Sanctuary
The searchlights at Vanguard Outpost cut through the grey air like fingers trying to grab something.Keal hit his palm on the steering wheel to wake himself up and focus on the steel walls of the outpost. The last twenty five miles were really tough on the rover. It was making noises and leaking fluid all over the place. The big iron gates of the outpost opened up enough for the rover to get through.Keal did not slow down. He drove the rover into the courtyard. Stopped it with a jerk. The engine. The cabin was filled with the smell of burned metal. Before the wheels stopped turning the back doors of the rover were opened from the outside.Evelyn was standing there with some medics and big stretchers. She looked inside the rover. Did not see anyone else.Where are the others Evelyn asked. They did not make it Keal said, getting out of the rover. He was really tired. His knees buckled.A medic tried to help him. Keal pushed him away.Forget about me Keal said. Get the Boss and the Comm
Chapter 53: Crimson Hunger
The hunger was not a feeling. It was like a force that was pulling Idris Cole down. He broke the straps that held him to the hospital bed. They were like paper. His new left arm was made of a glowing material and dark red bone. It sparked when he moved it. The red mist in the room swirled around him. He breathed it in with every breath.Idris looked down. Rhea was on the bed next to him. Her body was covered in a metal-like material. It was fused to her skin. The cracks were sealed with a colorful scab made from Idriss own blood. When he looked at her with his vision she was not the person he knew. She was a source of energy.A message appeared in front of his eyes. It said "Consume" in letters. It was beating like his heart. His body was telling him to eat Rhea. It would make him stronger. Idris raised his hand. His sharp claws were above Rheas chest. His mouth was watering. He wanted to eat her. Then Idris said "No". It was his voice. He was fighting the monster inside him. He remem
Chapter 54: Ascendant Feast
The big metal doors of the underground area were made to withstand a strong attack. They were three feet of metal locked into the ground with strong locks.Idris Cole did not look for a way to open them manually. He walked up to the metal door his breathing was shallow and rough. His body was using up all his energy burning his muscles to keep his heart beating. The red warning signs in his mind flashed, saying he would collapse in than three minutes.Idris raised his arm. The glowing red bone and muscle vibrated with a lot of energy. He did not punch the door he just pressed his claws against the cold metal and pushed. The heat from his body was so strong that it melted the metal door. A perfect circle of metal formed in the center of the door in seconds. Idris kicked the metal forward it crashed to the floor making a big hole.He stepped into the elevator area. Looked up. The main elevator was stuck on the floor because of Evelyns security lock. It was a way up, three hundred feet.
Chapter 55: Abyssal Wake
Idris Cole was in a lot of pain. It was not his body that hurt it was like something was tearing him apart from the inside out. He was kneeling in the middle of a courtyard and he could not move because his own gravity was holding him down. The dark color that was spreading through his veins was from the Overlord Spire, a thing that the Curator had tried to control. The Leviathan mutation was helping his body heal. It needed a strong structure to work. So it was changing his bones. Adding alien technology to his body. The people around him were struggling to get up. They were. Were being crushed by the strong gravity. Idriss head went back. He let out a loud scream. It was a sound, like metal tearing and an animal roaring.Damian was on the roof of the Outpost. He could not shoot or even breathe. The air was getting thinner. His ears were popping. He was watching Idris in horror as his skin was splitting open. Dark armor plates were coming out of Idriss body. Covering his vital organs
Chapter 56: Iron Descent
The sky was on fire. It was screaming at the top of its lungs. The Vanguard dreadnought was coming down from the sky. It was a huge city in the air made of strong metal and plasma. It blocked out the light of the moon. Made a big shadow that covered the whole Vanguard Outpost and the canyon. The noise from its engines was so loud that it made the walls of the command center shake and dust fell from the ceiling.Evelyn was holding the edge of the console. Her knuckles were white. The radar screen was not working because of the warships electronic warfare suite. It was just a bunch of white noise. They are trying to stop us from using our defenses Evelyn yelled. Sector One Command has control over our outpost. They just shut down our plasma batteries.Keal was looking at the ceiling and the noise from the engines was making his gun shake in his hand. If they wanted to destroy the Outpost they could have done it from up high. Why are they coming down here? They do not want the Outpost Id
Chapter 57: White Hell
A huge wave of fire washed over Idris Cole. This fire was blue and white. It was so hot. The heat was really strong. It was hot enough to melt metal and turn rock into boiling glass in a second. The air around Idris Cole exploded. It made a loud noise that broke all the windows in the Vanguard Outpost. The plasma fire hit Idris Cole in the chest. It pushed him back a little. The light from the fire was so bright that it covered Idris Cole completely.Inquisitor Vance watched all of this through his helmet. He felt happy and cold inside. No living thing could survive the plasma fire. The heat would break down Idris Coles body at a small level.Inquisitor Vance said that Idris Cole was dead. He was getting ready to give the order to breach the bunker. Then something strange happened. The white fire started to turn black. The heat was not spreading out. It was being pulled towards Idris Cole. The blue flames turned into purple and then disappeared.Idris Cole was standing in the middle o
Chapter 58: Heaven Fall
The violet beam did not incinerate him. It became his highway.Idris Cole struck the center of the Lance of Judgement at three times the speed of sound. The thermal energy was astronomical, hot enough to strip the electrons from atoms, but his Apex Core was an insatiable engine forged from cosmic dark matter. Instead of burning, the skin covering his chest hardened into a hyper-dense, obsidian shell that drank the plasma fire like dry earth absorbing rain. His biomechanical left arm, pulsing with violet dark matter, reached out into the core of the beam.Invert, Idris commanded in his mind.He reversed the localized gravity vector within the pillar of light. The millions of tons of superheated plasma descending toward the Outpost were suddenly caught in a violent upward vortex, sucked backward toward the source of the firing aperture. Idris rode the inverted energy wave straight into the maw of the orbital cannon.Five hundred feet above the earth, the underbelly of the mile-long drea
Chapter 59: Ashen Reunion
Idris Cole walked alone through the wasteland the ash reaching up to his knees. It was a walk like a ghost tour and the only sound was the soft crunch of ash beneath his feet. The eastern ridge was on fire a wall of flames that seemed to touch the sky. This was where Sector Ones big warship had met its end. Ahead of him Idris saw the broken remains of Vanguard Outpost.Inside his head there was nothing. No thoughts, no feelings, a empty space. Idris tried to remember what food tasted like before the world fell apart. He tried to recall the face of the person he killed.. His mind was a blank.Idris thought about the system that was inside him. He asked for a status report. The red words appeared in front of him cold and without feeling. His Apex Core was working well. His body was stable.. His memories were broken. Forty-two percent of them were gone forever. The system warned him that using his matter powers would make him lose more memories. It wanted him to let go of his feelings.I
Chapter 60: Shattered Sky
The hard light dome came down over the valley like a heavy metal lid.The blue barrier made a humming noise and it was so strong that it flattened the ash clouds around it.The sky above was like a grid with dark shapes of eleven big Sector One ships hanging above it.Idris felt something was different away. The spatial lock was not just holding them back physically it was also stopping them with something called Sovereign suppression fields. The dark matter under his skin was moving slowly like heavy liquid. His eyes got smaller as he looked at the lines on the dome with his Apex vision.Rhea said beside him her voice was low and rough They are burning the air.She raised her hand and it was getting hotter but the hard light grid above was taking that heat and making the dome stronger.Idris said, It feeds on the energy we give it.Sector One made this to stop people like us who're very powerful. The more we fight it the stronger it gets. The heavy metal door to the bunker opened and
