Chapter 1: Left to Die
The sky above Sector One was a deep brown, like a large bruise. It was always covered in a layer of yucky ash and smog that people called the shroud. For years the sun had been hidden behind this mess, a faint light trying to get through. The city was a graveyard with broken buildings, twisted metal and cracked roads. Nature had not reclaimed this place; it was a big mess.
Idris Cole pulled his scarf up over his face taking breaths. His lungs hurt from the air and he knew he needed a good mask to stay alive. His long coat was stiff with mud and old blood. He held an iron pipe in his hand his only defense. It was not a weapon but it was better than nothing. Idris hid behind a bus looking out at the empty plaza. The ground was cracked, with weird black moss growing out of it. Thirty yards away a group of walkers were shuffling around a dry fountain. They were slow and blind. There were a lot of them. If they surrounded him they would kill him. Idris was not there to fight the dead he just wanted to survive. His stomach was growling he was very hungry. He had not eaten in two days just drinking rainwater. He looked at a store on the other side of the plaza it might have some food. In Sector One, a store that had not been looted was like finding gold. Idris waited for the wind to pick up then he moved. He kept low trying not to make noise as he ran to the store. His heart was beating fast he was scared. Every scavenger knew that speed was life and noise was death. He made it to the store without the walkers noticing him. He squeezed through a gap in the wall his coat tearing on a sharp piece of glass. Inside the air was thick with dust and mold. Idris did not waste time he started searching for food. Most of the shelves were empty. He found a small crate in the back. Inside there were three cans of food and a small bottle of medicine. Idris was happy he had found something to eat.. Then he heard a noise, a click from the front of the store. It was not a walker it was a person. Idris froze, his muscles locked. He put the food in his pockets. Held his iron pipe tight. A rough voice called out "Well well look what the cat dragged in a little rat looking for crumbs in our territory." Three men walked into the store they were scavengers. The bad kind. They wore leather armor. Had cruel faces. The leader had a shotgun the other two had machetes. Idris knew he was in trouble he had no chance of winning a fight. The leader told him to hand over his coat and the food. He would shoot him. Idris did not move he was thinking. Then something weird happened. A low humming noise filled the air and the shadows in the room started to move. A cold voice spoke in Idriss's mind "Sovereign alignment matrix initiated." Idris saw a screen in front of him it was, like a computer interface. It said he was level one. He had a special feature called Critical Rebate Mechanic. It meant that if he gave something to someone he might get something better back. Idris was confused. He knew he had to try it. The leader of the scavengers told him to move. He would shoot. Idris looked at the man in his pockets. He had the food and the medicine. He decided to test the system he pulled out the bottle of medicine. Held it out. The fluid inside was yellow and murky it was not good medicine.. Idris was hoping that the system would make it better. Idris said to the leader his voice steady his dark eyes locked on the leader's face. The thing I am giving you is a serum. It is very strong. It is worth more than the food we have. Take it. Let me go. The leader's eyes got a little bigger when he saw the bottle of medicine. In Sector One medical supplies are very valuable. He took a step forward his big dirty hand grabbing the bottle from Idris. A strong serum? The leader laughed, holding it up to the light his men looking at the prize. You are really stupid aren't you? You are giving away your thing before we even talk about it. The moment the leader's fingers closed around the bottle Idris heard a sound in his head like a bell. Ding! The system said: You have given something to someone That person is not a friend and is not very strong. You get a reward for this. You get a lot of medicine. The medicine is now in your box. Before Idris could think about this a big shiny silver box appeared on the floor behind him, where the leader's men could not see it. Idris did not wait. He knew the leaders' men would kill him when they were done laughing. He turned around dropped the iron pipe he was holding and reached behind the shelf. His fingers touched the handle of the silver box. It opened quietly. Inside the box, Idris saw ten needles filled with a blue liquid that seemed to glow. The liquid moved gently making a light on his face. The system said: This is strong medicine. It can make you very healthy and strong. It can even make you better than you were before. Idris took one of the needles. Put it in his arm. He pressed the liquid into his blood. At first, nothing happened. Then Idris felt a change in his body. It was like his body was being rebuilt. He felt his cells getting stronger and better. His lungs did not hurt anymore. He could see clearly even the small things in the air. His muscles got a little bigger and stronger. He did not feel tired or hungry anymore. He felt like he had a lot of energy. The system said: You have taken the medicine. You are now stronger and better. The leader saw the change in Idris. He looked different like a person. His eyes were darker and stronger. The air around him seemed to be moving. What is happening? The leader said, his voice shaking. Something is wrong with this guy! Shoot him! The leader raised his gun. Tried to shoot Idris.. Idris was too fast. He moved to the side. The bullets hit the wall behind him. The leaders' men did not see Idris move. They thought he had disappeared. Where did he go? one of them said, his voice shaking. Idris was behind him. He grabbed the man's wrist. Squeezed it. The man's bones. He fell. Idris hit the man's neck. He died. The system said: You have defeated one of the guys. You get some points. The other two men were scared. They did not know what to do. One of them ran away. The other tried to shoot Idris again. Idris was too strong. He caught the man. Pinned him to the floor. Please do not kill me the man said. Take everything let me go. I know something, about the Iron Clad camp. Idris looked at him. Said: Where is your camp's food storage? The man told him. Idris said thank you. Then Idris killed the man. The system said: You have defeated another guy. You get some points. Idris looked out the window. Saw the other man running away. He was going to catch him. Idris did not run. He walked over to the briefcase that was sitting in the corner. The briefcase had the remaining nine syringes of the SSS-Tier Celestial Gene Enhancement Serum in it. Each syringe could create a powerful ally or be used as a very valuable bargaining chip. Idris picked up the briefcase and closed the lid with a firm click. Then he put his iron pipe back in his hand. It was time to see if the iron pipe could be upgraded. Idris stepped through the window and out of the convenience store. He stood in the air of the plaza. The common walkers who had been walking around the fountain had heard the sound of the shotgun blast. Now they were turning towards him. They were making moans as they smelled the living flesh. Idris ignored them. He looked at the raider who was running away in the distance. Idris had strength and agility that were at the limit of what a human could have at Tier 1. He crouched down. Kicked off the ground. The asphalt under his boots. Sent stones flying backward. Idris moved forward fast. He covered ten yards in his step. His body was a blur as he moved through the wind. The common walkers did not even have time to turn their heads before he passed them. The wind from his movement knocked some of them to the ground. The raider heard a rushing sound behind him. He looked back. Was very scared. Idris was catching up to him fast. No the raider screamed. Stay away from me. He swung his machete behind him as Idris got closer. Idris did not slow down. He stepped into the raider's path. Grabbed him by the throat. Idris lifted the raider off the ground with one arm. The raider kicked his legs. Tried to grab Idriss arm but it was no use. Look at me Idris said. His voice was loud and clear. The raider looked down. He was very scared. You are going to help me Idris said. He had a smile on his face. He raised his hand and held out the iron pipe. He put the pipe in the raider's hand. Made him hold it. I am giving you this pipe Idris said. Consider it a gift for your help. The raider looked at the pipe in his hand. He did not understand why Idris was giving him a pipe while choking him. Then the system made a noise. It was louder than before. Idriss mind was filled with a light. Ding. System Notification: Idris had given a -consumable weapon to someone else. The raider was a human. This met the requirements for a rebate. The system triggered a Critical Rebate Mechanic. The iron pipe had changed. It was now a Titan-Grade Nano-Carbon Monomolecular Longsword. The sword was put into Idriss's system matrix. A brilliant light cut through the air in front of Idris. The space seemed to tear open. A small hole appeared. The hilt of a sword came out of the hole. Idris let go of the raider. Reached for the sword. He wrapped his fingers around the hilt. The hilt was black and fit perfectly in his hand. The guard was small and shaped like a bird's wing. The blade was very thin and black. It had a line running down the center. The line glowed with heat. Hummed with energy. The air around the blade. Shimmered. The blade could cut through anything. Item: Titan-Grade Nano-Carbon Monomolecular Longsword. This sword is a cold weapon technology. It was made by a civilization. The blade's edge is very sharp. It can cut through any material. It has a core that heats the edge to a very high temperature. This cauterizes any tissue it cuts. The sword is indestructible. It weighs 1.2 kilograms. Idris held the sword in his hand. It felt like part of his arm. It was light but very powerful. The raider on the ground looked up at the sword. He was very scared. He still held the iron pipe in his hand. Please the raider whispered. What are you? I am the one who changes the rules Idris said. He swung the sword in an arc. The sword cut through the raider's neck and the stone pillar behind him. There was no sound or resistance. The wound was cauterized. No blood spilled out. The raider's head fell off. The stone pillar broke in half. System Notification: Idris had neutralized a scavenger. He gained experience points. Idris stood in the ruined avenue. The moonlight caught the line on his sword. In less than ten minutes, his life had changed. He had entered the convenience store as a human. Now he was a human with a legendary system and a powerful sword. The common walkers were coming towards him. There were, over sixty of them. They made a lot of noise. Idris did not run. He did not hide. He lowered the point of his sword towards the ground. His eyes flashed with intelligence. He needed experience points to reach Level 2. He needed to find the subway station to get food and weapons. He needed to find allies to help him unlock his system. The apocalypse had broken the world.. Idris had found a way to survive. " Let's go Idris said to himself. He moved forward with his sword cutting a path through the walkers.Expand

The Grey Grid was crying. That was the way Idris Cole could describe the bad rain that was hitting the strong roof of the Vanguard Outpost. The rain did not make the smell of death go away it just made it worse. It mixed the smell of blood with the smell of bad air and old things. If you went out in that rain you would die slowly and painfully. The bad rain would eat away at your clothes.
