CHAPTER ELEVEN “Jensen, please.” Her voice trembled on cue. Perfectly reharsed. “I made a mistake. A horrible mistake. I was scared, and confused, and Benjamin pressured me into all of it… please, just give me one more chance…” “No,” Jensen cut her off. Rose blinked, thrown by the lack of hesitation. “You don’t mean that. Two years, Jensen. You loved me.” She sniffled. “I did.” His voice stayed even, almost bored. “That’s in the past now. You made sure of that yourself, in a VIP room, in front of an audience, with another man’s hand groping you.” He shrugged. “Hard to unsee something like that. Even harder to care.” “You’re being cruel, Jensen.” Jensen scoffed. “I’m being honest. There’s a difference, but I understand the confusion. You’ve never experienced the second one.” Lana’s patience snapped instantly. She was behind Rose the entire time. “Don’t talk to her like that, you broke piece of trash.” She stepped forward, finger jabbing the air. “You think anyone
Empire
CHAPTER TWELVE Jensen walked off campus. One second he was standing outside the lecture hall, staring at the spot where Charlotte had vanished into the crowd. The next, he was three blocks away. His phone buzzed. A text message came in. [Coleman: Bro where’d you go?? You good?] He typed back. [Fine. Need some air] He kept moving. Charlotte’s text was still looping in his head. The “I just need to be alone right now” she sent before she vanished. Jensen would ensure Matthew got punished for this. A second buzz followed. It was a different number. [Geena: Hey big brother. You’re needed at the Victorian suite. Now. Don’t make me send Seth.] The Victorian suit was only used by Geena. She didn’t own it but she was the only one who liked it enough. She never invited anyone over. Jensen frowned. What was wrong? He quickly flagged a taxi and got in. Upon getting to the suit, the cabbie glared at him. “You’re sure this is the right place?” The cabbie asked. “
Friends… and new enemies
CHAPTER THIRTEEN “An empire,” Geena repeated, smiling like she’d been waiting all day to hear him say it. “Good. Because empires don’t run on sentiment, big brother. They run on leverage. And you’re about to get your first lesson in exactly that.” Jensen closed the folder. “Then teach me,” he said to her. “Start with whatever’s actually useful. Skip the parts where you dress it up as a metaphor.” Geena’s smile sharpened. “Fine. Next week, the three major families and Everest Corporation are throwing a charity dinner….” She stood up, walking toward the mini bar to pour herself a drink. “…Officially, it’s raising money for underfunded community programs.” She let the pause stretch. “Unofficially, it’s a cage match dressed in black tie. Everyone who matters in this city is going to be in that room, sniffing for blood, trying to figure out who’s actually running Whitmore.” “Meet me, you mean.” He said. “Meet you,” she confirmed. “They already know the company exist
Upgrade
CHAPTER FOURTEEN “You need an upgrade.” Geena’s voice echoed through Jensen’s mind. He smiled. If she thought some fancy clothes and shoes would do some good, then he would oblige. The mall doors slid open, and Jensen walked through them. Just at the beginning, he saw a newspaper report. STARR INC. SHARES CONTINUE FREEFALL. THIRD STRAIGHT DAY OF LOSSES. Jensen smiled, then kept walking. Geena’s handiwork was still bleeding out in real time. He didn’t feel guilty about the satisfaction. Not a bit. “Can I help you?” A woman in a tailored blazer intercepted him. He’d found the menswear store on the second floor. “Hello? Sir? What do you want?” Her tone carried the particular rush of someone already calculating how fast she could get him back outside. “Clothes,” Jensen said. “Several.” She laughed, taking in his appearance. “Sweetheart, the cologne samples alone cost more than whatever’s in your bank account. This isn’t a thrift store. This is for high class customers only.”
Enjoy while it lasts
CHAPTER FIFTEENJensen stepped into the VIP section. He wasn’t done spending yet.“Can I help you?” The salesman’s eyes swept over the bags from the menswear store, then over Jensen’s face.He frowned. “I’d like to see the special pieces.” Jensen“Listen pretty boy, those start at fifty thousand. This isn’t a pawn shop where you bring in your mother’s wedding ring and walk out with a story. Maybe try the food court. I hear the watch kiosk by the pretzel stand does battery replacements for five thousand dollars.”A woman browsing nearby snorted into her hand.“I didn’t ask for comedy,” Jensen said. “I asked to see the collection.”“And I’m telling you to leave before I call security and save us both the embarrassment.” The man leaned on the counter, smug. “This is the VIP session. Some random playboy cannot anything here. You can leave now. These things are above you.” He said to Jensen.“Things people like you gatekeep,” Jensen replied, “because the moment someone walks in without t
Saving her
CHAPTER SIXTEEN The slap echoed before the scream did. Jensen recognized that voice. Charlotte! He’d decided to give Geena her gift later. But first make a quick stop at the university restaurant. He’d been three blocks from the restaurant when the sound cut through the quiet street. Jensen looked into the alley. He saw a man grabbing her hair. A thug, maybe? Dan had her pinned against the brick, one hand fisted in her hair, the other raised for a second strike. He was a common thug who also worked with Benjamin. Charlotte’s lip was already split, blood smeared dark at the corner of her mouth. “Should’ve stayed pretty and quiet,” Dan said, voice slurred and ugly. “Everyone’s already seen what you really are. Might as well act the part. Fucking bitch!” “Get off me,” Charlotte snapped, voice shaking. Dan chuckled. “Heard you like it rough,” the man slurred, breath reeking of cheap liquor. “I saw the videos. Everyone has. No point playing innocent now, sweethear
What she learned
Chapter 17 "My mother used to say hunger has a smell.” Charlotte said, turning the bottle slowly between her fingers. "You don't notice it until you've been clean of it for a while, and then it hits you while walking past a restaurant vent. Cooking oil and rot, at the same time." Jensen kept his eyes on her. She took another sip of her alcohol before sniffling like she got something in her nostrils. “We lived in the Hollow district. You’ve probably never been there.” She smiled faintly. “Nobody goes there unless they have to. My father died before I could remember his face. My mother collected scrap to keep us fed: copper wire, old appliances, whatever people threw out that still had value if you knew where to sell it.” A pause. A long one. Like she was pulling the memories out from the darkest core of her soul. “Winters were the worst. We didn’t have real walls in half the apartment. Just wood boards nailed over gaps where the wind came through. I used to sleep in eve
Almost…
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN"Kiss me," Charlotte said again, softer this time. Like he didn't hear her the first time.Jensen didn't move."Charlotte." He kept his voice gentle. "You've had five beers and just told me the worst thing that ever happened to you. That's not a yes I'd trust tomorrow."Her face fell flat. "You don't want to?""I want to," he said. "That's exactly why I'm not going to. Not like this.""You're weird, Jensen. Most guys would jump at this opportunity.""I'm not most men."He pushed his chair back and extended his hand toward her."Come on. Let's get you home.""Okay," she said quietly. "Okay."He paid the tab on the way out, leaving enough that the bartender didn't bother counting it twice. Charlotte swayed slightly as she stood, catching herself on the edge of the table, and Jensen slid an arm around her without asking, steadying her before she could insist she didn't need it.The walk back was slow. Charlotte's steps had gone unsteady somewhere between the bar door and
Benjamin… again.
CHAPTER NINETEEN “Told you I’d be back!” Jensen pushed off the brick wall and got a clear look at the army Benjamin had assembled. Twelve muscle men, heavily tattooed. “Twelve men,” Jensen said while wiping blood from his lip. “For one busboy. Did your father know you’d need a small militia, or did you not bother telling him you’re still this pathetic?” Benjamin’s smile wavered. “You only won before because some rich bitch came riding in on her Trojan horse. She’s not here tonight.” He spread his arms wide, theatrically. “It’s just you. Just you and the people who actually matter in this city.” “I don’t see anyone here who matters,” Jensen said. “I see a coward who needed a dozen strangers to feel brave for one night.” Benjamin’s smile cracked.. “Kneel. Apologize properly. Or I swear, you’ll spend the rest of your miserable life learning how to crawl instead.” “You couldn’t make me kneel with a gun to my head,” Jensen said. “What makes you think twelve id
Summon him
CHAPTER TWENTYBenjamin’s screaming had finally tapered into ragged sobs by the time Seth turned away from him.“Twelve thugs and a coward,” Seth said, rolling his shoulders like he’d barely broken a sweat. “I’ve had harder mornings stretching.”Jensen almost laughed. “I’m impressed anyway.”“Don’t be. None of them could fight. They were just numbers.” Seth glanced at the wreckage scattered across the alley: groaning bodies, a dented car, Benjamin curled like a baby on the pavement. “Numbers don’t impress me. Skill does. None of this was skill.”That left Brian. He hadn’t moved from where he stood near the alley’s mouth, hadn’t tried to run, hadn’t tried to fight. He simply watched, arms loose at his sides.Jensen walked toward him slowly.“You’re not like the rest of them,” Jensen said.“No,” Brian agreed. “I’m not.”“Then you already know how this ends if I let him finish what he started.” Jensen tilted his head toward Seth.Brian’s jaw tightened. “I know.”“But I’m not going to.”
