CHAPTER TWENTY

Benjamin’s screaming had finally tapered into ragged sobs by the time Seth turned away from him.

“Twelve thugs and a coward,” Seth said, rolling his shoulders like he’d barely broken a sweat. “I’ve had harder mornings stretching.”

Jensen almost laughed. “I’m impressed anyway.”

“Don’t be. None of them could fight. They were just numbers.” Seth glanced at the wreckage scattered across the alley: groaning bodies, a dented car, Benjamin curled like a baby on the pavement.

CHAPTER 27The CEO office looked different when it was just the two of them.Bigger, somehow. Geena moved to the window. Jensen sat on the edge of the desk, jacket off, studying the city below. It has been 24 hours already, 24 hours since he became CEO of Whitmore.“Found something on Greg.” Geena said to him.“Walk me through it.” Jensen replied.“He expected either to be named GM, or to have enough influence over whoever was named that the difference wouldn’t matter. When I got GM and you came in as CEO, he lost both assumptions simultaneously.” She crossed her arms. “What made it worse is that he thinks I’m on his side. Or was. He’s been operating under the impression that I resented being passed over, that I’d be willing to undermine you quietly to make myself indispensable.”Jensen looked at her. “Is that what he thinks, or is that what someone told him to think?”Geena’s expression shifted. “That’s a good question.”“Because if someone positioned you as his ally before I ar

CHAPTER 26Greg’s call connected on the second ring.Jensen saw it happen from across the lobby.Thirty seconds, maybe less, before Greg pocketed his phone and started making his rounds to the manager floors with obedient efficiency. He had a frown on his face.Jensen filed it away and walked into the meeting room.Twenty minutes later, every chair was filled.Thirty faces arranged around the table.Greg sat third from the left, hands flat on the table, wearing the picture of cooperative professionalism.Jensen sat.Geena took the chair beside him. Fae and two security personnel positioned themselves against the wall behind, totally still and silent, making the room feel tight with their presence.Jensen let the silence stretch past comfort, past awkward, and well past the point where most people in leadership would have filled it with noise just to release the pressure. He didn’t release it.Forty seconds passed. Fifty. A man near the middle cleared his throat. Someone else shifted i

  • Whitmore

CHAPTER 25The lobby of Whitmore Asset Management went quiet the moment Jensen stepped through the doors. Then the applause started. Two hundred and sixty employees arranged in a reception line, clapping in unison, faces arranged into expressions of welcome that ranged from genuine to carefully performed. Jensen walked in, Geena a half-step behind, Fae silent as a shadow at the rear.He clocked the three deputies immediately.Greg Worthington stood dead center at the front of the line — mid-fifties, and broad. His applause was slower than everyone else’s. Deliberately.May McBride stood to Greg’s left. sharp-eyed, composed, clapping correctly while her eyes ran a rapid, private calculation across Jensen’s face.Bruce Hull stood to Greg’s right. cold and economical with his presence.Jensen walked the line. He nodded. Said nothing, and let them look. The whispers underneath the applause traveled with him like a current.“He’s younger than I than I thought…”“They really skipped Gre

CHAPTER 24The Mercedes hadn’t moved yet.Geena watched Jensen settle into the seat beside her.“Luthor,” Jensen said, saving her the trouble. “Talk.”“In a minute.” She glanced toward the front. “Jensen, meet Fae.”The driver’s eyes found his in the rearview mirror: sharp, dark, completely still. She looked approximately his age, which was the least remarkable thing about her. “Master,” she said simply, and pulled into traffic without being asked.Jensen looked at Geena. “Master?”“She knows who you are. She knows everything. From today, Fae is responsible for your defense. Surveillance, tracking, daily protection… anything that falls under keeping you alive and informed. She commands a five-person team.”“And Seth?” Jensen asked.“Offense. Five-person team as well.” Geena held his gaze. “Together they’re your full security system. Separate functions, separate chains, both answering to you.”Jensen studied the back of Fae’s head. The stillness of her, the way she’d merged into tr

CHAPTER 23Ping!A text from Principal Luthor’s office, into Jensen’s phone.[Mr. Pike. The principal requests your presence at your earliest convenience. His office. Main administration building, third floor.]Jensen stared at it for a moment, running through the probable reasons. The fights. The absences. The fact that he’d paid for a dinner that cost more than the university’s catering budget for a semester. Any one of them could justify a formal summons. He forwarded nothing to Geena, told Coleman he’d be back, and walked across campus alone.Jensen arrived at the block. The secretary showed him in without making him wait, which told him something before he’d even crossed the threshold. And that unusual smile on her face? Definitely Suspicious.Principal Luthor stood when Jensen entered, hand already extended across the desk.“Mr. Pike. Thank you for coming so quickly.” He gestured toward the chair across from him. “Please, sit. Can I offer you anything? Coffee? Or perhaps someth

Chapter 22The phone rang eleven times. Matthew’s smug smile had been dissolving for the past thirty seconds.“Wrong number?” Jensen asked, not even looking up from his breakfast.Someone near the back laughed — short, quick. But it had happened, and everyone heard it.Matthew tried again. His jaw tightened incrementally with every unanswered ring.He pulled the phone from his ear and stared at it like it had just confessed to cheating.“He’s probably busy,” Matthew said, voice losing altitude fast.“He’s probably unconscious,” Jensen replied, and picked up his fork.Dead silence.Matthew looked around. A few heads nodded slowly, uncertainty creeping back in through the cracks.Coleman dropped back into his seat, barely controlled fury vibrating off him. “You’re actually the calmest person I’ve ever met and it scares me sometimes.”“Getting angry would require caring,” Jensen said. “I don’t.”“Don’t think you’ve won anything. Benjamin will still come and deal with you!” Matthew blurt
