CHAPTER HUNDRED AND TWELVE Patrick looked at the leader of the Forsaken for a few seconds, and even though he struggled not to be afraid of him, he couldn’t stop himself from being wary of the fact that it wasn’t going to be easy to kill him just like he had killed Rico who was not as strong as he was. He was still struggling with the uncertainty that crept into his mind as he stood before KaelWho was getting ready to attack him when he suddenly felt a weakness surging through his veins, causing him to feel very dizzy. His body seemed to be reacting to something he was completely unaware of, and he struggled to keep his eyes open while he groaned. “What is happening to me? Why do I feel this way?” Patrick asked himself in a whisper while he continued to struggle with himself amidst the weakness that became more intense with each passing moment. “What is wrong with him? Why is he acting very strange?” Lucy whispered only to her hearing while she looked at Patrick who was still str

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND THIRTEEN Kael grunted angrily while his men groaned in disappointment as they thought that the spear was going to get Patrick after Kael had aimed for his head, hoping to kill him with the second spear. “You missed!” Patrick said to Kael with a smirk on his face while he struggled to catch his breath after having a near-death experience while he watched the spear attempt to plunge into his head. “Hand me over a sword!” Kael said imperatively to his men, and one of them brought a sword that was shaped like a branch of a tree, with two sharp edges and a pointed end. The sword was made from bronze, and Lucy gasped at the sight of it,While Kael held onto the sword with a tight grip, he increased the pace of his steps while he growled at Patrick whom he wanted to kill so badly. “I think I have had enough of this! Let’s get this over with!” “Gladly!” Patrick nodded at Kael’s words, and he started walking toward him as well, keeping his eyes on the sword which was o

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND FOURTEEN For almost thirty seconds, Patrick looked at the sword in his hand, wondering if it was going to be able to do anything to hurt the beast in Human form standing before him. At that moment, he would have preferred the energy blade, but there was no time to think about any other decision as Kael had gotten ready to attack. Stomping his feet heavily on the hard floor, Kael ran toward Patrick with all the energy he had in him, ready to finish him off with a single strike. “You are going to regret what you did to my champion!” Kael roared, jumping up again while he lifted his sword, and struck Patrick with it. Reacting to the nervousness that cringed into him the moment he saw the sword coming down at him, Patrick lifted his sword impulsively in an attempt to block the strike from Kael’s sword. Unexpectedly, the blazing sword blazed with a fierce glitter that was bright enough to blind anyone who gazed at it for a long time. Sending Kael’s sword back to h

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND FIFTEEN"Can we take them all?" Lucy asked but no one could provide a response, because the truth was nobody knew, and the savage men who remained were already closing the gap between them with their weapons raised."Stay behind me," Patrick said, tightening his grip on the sword that had just taken Kael's head. The blade still glowed faintly with red light on its edge, and for a moment he let himself believe that just maybe, it was enough to make the rest of the Forsaken hesitate. It wasn't.They came at once, not in the ordered way Kael had commanded his men before, but in a wild, headless charge, each man trying to be the one who avenged him."They've got no one telling them what to do," Borius said, already moving to place himself between the charging men and his sister. "That makes them more dangerous, not less.""Cheerful," Heather muttered, an arrow already fixed to her bowstring.ALERT: HOSTILE GROUP ENGAGINGRECOMMENDATION: DO NOT HOLD GROUND"Not planning

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND SIXTEENPatrick moved through the ferns with the blazing sword lowered but lit, using its light more as a lantern than a weapon now that the sounds of pursuit had faded. The forest here was thicker than what they'd crossed before, trunks pressed close enough that the moonlight barely reached the ground, and every shadow looked, for one heart-stopping second, like a man with a spear."Lucy," he called again, far quieter this time.He heard her before he saw her, the unmistakable sound of someone trying very hard not to cry and failing at it, off to his left past a fallen log slick with moss. He found her sitting with her back against the wood, knees pulled to her chest, her bow across her lap with an arrow still nocked."Hey." He crouched in front of her, and she flinched before she registered who it was, then let out a breath so hard it shook her shoulders."I thought you were" She didn't finish it."I'm not." He held out a hand and pulling her up. "Are you hurt?""

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND SEVENTEENMorning came without much ceremony with light filtering down through the trees, the fog low enough that Patrick could see his own breath before he could see past ten feet in any direction. Nobody had slept well. He knew that without asking, because nobody complained about being tired, and that was usually how you could tell."Which way did you say he fell?" Heather asked, already checking her quiver."Near the ridge, past where we fought Rico." Patrick rubbed at his eyes. "I think. It's hard to tell one patch of that place from another.""That's helpful.""I'm working with what I've got."Borius pushed himself up slower than he wanted anyone to notice, one hand braced against the log, and Heather was at his side before he'd finished standing, though neither of them made a thing of it."You're limping," she said."I'm walking.""Those aren't the same word."He gave her a look that wasn't quite annoyed, and she gave him one right back that wasn't quite worr

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND EIGHTEENThe shriek didn't come again, and that was almost worse than if it had. They stood there a moment, all five of them, waiting for it to repeat itself so they'd at least know which direction to avoid."Could be nothing," Lucy said, though she didn't sound like she believed that."Could be," Heather agreed, in a tone that made clear she didn't believe it either. They pushed on anyway, because there wasn't really a version of this where they turned back. The fog grew worse as the climbed, and within a few minutes Patrick could barely make out Borius's shape more than a few steps ahead of him."Ground's getting soft," Borius called back. "Watch your footing."He wasn't exaggerating. What had been solid dirt turned, without much warning, into something closer to sponge — the kind of ground that gave a little under a boot before deciding whether to hold or not. Patrick's foot sank an inch deeper than he expected, and he caught himself against a low branch before

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND NINETEENThey finally made it out of the fog into a clearing that didn't feel like it belonged in this decripit dimension , the ground here packed hard and swept clean in a way nothing overgrown ever managed to on its own, and Patrick understood before anyone said a word that they'd walked straight into somewhere people actually lived. A ring of crude shelters stood around a low fire pit, built from branches and hide and the bones of something large enough that Patrick didn't want to guess what it had been, and past the shelters, tied to a post driven deep into the dirt, stood Seth,m filthy, favoring one leg, but unmistakably alive, and the sight of him hit Patrick in a way he hadn't braced himself for."Seth," Lucy breathed, already moving forward before Heather's arm shot out and stopped her."Wait," Heather said, low. "We don't know how many there are yet."She was right to say it, because the answer came a second later when six figures rose up from around the s

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND TWENTYThey didn't stop moving until the fog thinned out into the kind of ordinary forest they'd grown used to over the past weeks, tall trees and solid ground and none of the wrongness that had clung to the basin and the camp behind them, and only then did Patrick let himself believe they were actually clear of it. Seth still leaned on him more than he probably needed to by that point, though nobody suggested he stop, and when they finally found a spot sheltered enough to risk a fire, the centaur folded himself down onto the ground like his legs had simply decided they were done being trusted with the job of holding him up."Water first," Heather said, already crouching beside him with the skin she'd been carrying, and Seth drank like a man who hadn't had the option in longer than any of them wanted to think too hard about, some of it spilling down his chin because his hands weren't steady enough yet to manage it properly."Slower," Lucy said gently, and he laughe

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND TWENTY-ONESeth slept for most of the day once his stomach had settled enough to hold food, curled up near the fire with the kind of stillness that told Patrick just how much the past two days had actually cost him, and the rest of them let him have it without much discussion, since nobody seemed to feel much urgency about moving again so soon after finally getting him back. Patrick spent a good part of the afternoon simply sitting with his back against a tree, doing very little beyond watching his friend breathe and letting Dara run through a slow, quiet check of everyone's mana levels, which came back low across the board but not dangerously so, which was about as good a report as he'd expected to get.It was somewhere past midday that he noticed Heather and Borius had drifted off a short distance from the rest of the camp, close enough that Patrick could still make out the shape of the conversation even if the words themselves stayed mostly private, and somethin
