CHAPTER HUNDRED AND TWENTY-TWOThey broke camp the next morning with Seth back on his feet, still moving stiffly and drinking more water than seemed necessary, but insisting loudly enough that nobody argued with him about it that he'd rather walk under his own power than be fussed over for another day, and Patrick understood well enough not to push it, since he suspected he'd have said the same thing in Seth's position. Dwayne had the map out before they'd gone half a mile, unrolling it against a flat rock while the others gathered around, and something in the way he studied it this time was different from the dozen other times he'd done the same over the past weeks, less puzzled, more certain, his finger tracing a line across the parchment with confidence"This matches," he said, more to himself than to anyone else. "I couldn't place it before because we hadn't gone far enough east. But this ridge here" he tapped a spot on the map, then gestured vaguely toward the rise of land past

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND TWENTY-THREEThe gap between the peaks turned out to be narrower up close than it had looked from a distance, barely wide enough for Borius to pass through without turning his shoulders sideways, and it opened, after a stretch of walking single file through stone that pressed close on both sides, into a wide bowl of ruins that none of them had been able to see coming from the approach, hidden as it was behind the twin peaks like the whole valley had been built specifically to stay out of sight. What must once have been a causeway stretched across the middle of it, wide slabs of pale stone laid in a straight line toward a structure on the far side that Patrick couldn't make out clearly through the haze still clinging to the lower ground, and it took him a moment of studying the causeway itself to realize why Dwayne, walking just ahead of him, had gone still."It's not whole," Dwayne said. "Look at the middle section."He was right. What had looked from the gap like

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FOURThe structure at the far end of the causeway turned out to be smaller than it had looked through the haze, a squat building of the same pale stone as the ruins around it, half-collapsed on one side but with enough of its walls still standing that Patrick could make out something of what it must once have been — not a temple, exactly, though it had that same weight to it, more like a place built to hold something rather than to hold people, no windows that he could see, a single entrance yawning dark ahead of them where a door had either rotted away or never existed at all."Careful," Heather said, though nobody needed the reminder by that point, and they moved into the entrance in the same loose formation they'd used crossing the ledge, Patrick and Borius flanking the front with Lucy and Seth close behind and Dwayne bringing up the rear, watching the way back the way he always did, whether out of genuine caution or habit born from something else Patrick

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FIVENobody said much for a while after that, the fragment passing from hand to hand as each of them turned it over and studied the broken letters like staring at it long enough might make the missing half reappear, and Patrick was the one who finally said what he suspected everyone else had already landed on privately."Rasmus," he said. "It has to be. There's no reason for half a dozen other names to start the same way and end up buried in a ruin tied to the same seal that hung over Charles Oliver's execution.""It's not proof," Dwayne said, though there was less conviction in it than the words themselves suggested, like he was arguing the point mostly out of habit rather than any real belief that it mattered."No. But it's not nothing either." Patrick wrapped the strip carefully and tucked it into his pack, next to the map that had gotten them this far. "We keep it. Whatever it means, it means something, and I'd rather have it in hand when we finally get

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND TWENTY-SIXThe woman didn't stay much longer after that, unwilling, it seemed, to linger any closer to the ruins than she had to, and before she turned to leave she gave them the last of what she'd come to offer not a map, nothing so precise as that, but a description of the terrain past the ruins that matched, close enough to make Dwayne go quiet and thoughtful over his own notes, something Charles Oliver had apparently mentioned to Borius and Heather in his cell before his execution, a detail about a hollow beneath a split tree that none of them had thought much of at the time because it hadn't meant anything yet."There's a valley past the second ridge," the woman said, already backing toward the gap in the peaks where her two companions waited. "Steep on both sides, thick with old growth nobody's cleared in longer than anyone living can say. If your medallion is real, and if it's anywhere near here, that's where I'd look first. Not because I know anything about

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND TWENTY-SEVENPatrick woke before dawn out of habit more than necessity, the kind of light waking that came from days spent needing to be alert the moment his eyes opened, and it took him a moment lying there in the grey half-light to register what exactly had pulled him up out of sleep, since nothing around the camp seemed obviously wrong at first glance. Seth was still breathing steady beside him. Borius sat near the dead fire on the tail end of what must have been his watch, alert but unbothered. It was only when Patrick's eyes moved across the rest of the camp, counting without quite meaning to the way he'd started doing automatically since the day they'd lost each other in the fog, that he came up one short."Where's Lucy," he said, and it came out flatter than he intended, more statement than question.Borius turned, and whatever he saw in Patrick's face was enough to bring him fully alert in the space of a breath. "She's not with you?""She's not anywhere I c

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND TWENTY-EIGHTThey found her not past the ridge but on it, sitting on a flat outcrop of rock with the valley spread out below her, and the sight of her sitting there, whole and apparently unharmed, hit Patrick with a wave of relief so sharp it nearly buckled his knees before the next thought caught up with it, that whole and unharmed didn't mean the same thing as fine, and something in the stillness of her posture, the way she hadn't turned at the sound of five people scrambling up the last stretch of the slope toward her, told him this wasn't going to be the simple, grateful reunion he'd been hoping for the whole way here."Lucy." He reached her first, dropping to a crouch in front of her, hands hovering like he wasn't sure yet whether touching her was the right thing to do. "Are you hurt? Talk to me."She blinked, and it took a beat too long for her eyes to actually focus on him, like she was surfacing from somewhere deep enough that the trip back took real effort

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND TWENTY-NINEThey stopped just short of the tree line rather than pushing straight into the valley, Patrick calling the halt himself once it became clear nobody else was going to be the one to say out loud that walking blind into a place even the Forsaken avoided wasn't the kind of decision to make on momentum alone, and they settled into a rough half-circle among the last of the open ground, packs down, weapons close, the old growth ahead of them dense enough that Patrick couldn't see more than a few dozen feet past its edge no matter how he angled himself."We're not walking in without some kind of plan," he said. "Not after everything the last two days have cost us to learn.""There isn't much to plan around," Dwayne said, though he was already unrolling the map again out of habit more than expectation of finding anything new on it. "We have a description of a split tree with a hollow beneath it, secondhand from a dying man, and a warning from someone who admitte

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND THIRTYThe quiet inside the tree line didn't ease the further they went, if anything it deepened, until Patrick found himself listening for the small sounds a forest should have made and hearing nothing where they should have been, no birdsong, no insects working the undergrowth, nothing but the soft fall of their own footsteps against a carpet of old leaves that hadn't fully rotted the way leaves usually did, as though even the ordinary business of decay moved slower here than it did anywhere else."How far to the split tree," Borius asked, and even he kept his voice low, without anyone needing to tell him to."I don't know," Dwayne admitted, map rolled and tucked away now, since it had nothing useful left to offer once they were actually inside the growth it could only gesture toward from the outside. "Charles Oliver never gave a distance. Just that it was there, and that it mattered."They walked for what felt like an hour without any clear marker of progress, t

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND THIRTY-ONEPatrick was the one who finally moved, because someone had to, and because it felt wrong to let Dwayne be the one to test it first when so much of the party still didn't trust him enough to want him going in alone with whatever he might or might not already know. He stepped past Dwayne's crouched shape at the hollow's edge, close enough now that the cold radiating up from the dark beneath the split trunk raised the hair along his arms, and he'd barely gotten a hand out toward the shadow when the whole clearing seemed to lean in around him, the thin grey light dimming further still, and a voice that wasn't quite a voice pressed itself into his thoughts rather than his ears. What do you carry that you haven't spoken aloud? He staggered back a step, more from surprise than any physical force, and behind him he heard Heather's sharp intake of breath, which told him the others had felt something too, even if the words themselves had landed only in his own hea
