CHAPTER THIRTY-ONEThey bowed slightly and walked away after staring at Patrick for one last time. When he was certain that the soldiers were out of earshot, Patrick turned to look at the General who left him at once and continued walking toward the direction he had his eyes on. Patrick joined him almost immediately and after a few steps, they stood in front of each other with Titus holding onto his sword with his left hand just in case Patrick was still a threat. “I am sure you won't be needing that, especially now.” “Well, you never can tell. You might decide to be funny, and I wouldn’t hesitate to draw my sword.” Titus responded with a smirk, looking at Patrick who chuckled softly before he nodded with a smile on his face. “This better be good. Why did you take me away from my soldiers?” “We can’t trust anyone at this moment…” Patrick said with a whisper, and then he turned to look at some of the soldiers who had their eyes fixed on them. Titus joined him shortly after, and a

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO For the second time, Patrick thought about the words he heard from the General and realizing that it was the only way that he was going to be able to get into the palace without being attacked, he grunted at the fact that he was left with no choice than to agree with what he said. He grunted again, and then he stole a glance at some of the soldiers who refused to leave their positions and were patiently waiting to get a command from their General. “I hate that I am even thinking about this, General. This is really dangerous, and I don’t want anything to go wrong.” “Maybe that’s the price you have to pay for your freedom. You have no other choice, Ian.” Titus said calmly, looming at Patrick whose countenance was enough to tell that he was greatly troubled and unable to make a decision. Patrick let go of some of the air he had taken into his lungs, and then he discarded his deep concern so that he could be able to freely agree to what the General suggested. “Ve

CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE “No, not at all! We can continue.” Patrick responded to Titus who continued to look at him even when the soldiers he had beckoned arrived in front of him and bowed slightly. “Bind him! We have a prisoner to take to the Royal Prisons!”Titus pointed to Ian, and even though the soldiers had so much doubt about his words, they decided to do just as he had instructed. One of the soldiers pulled out a strong rope from underneath his single, and then he exchanged glances with his companion before they started to walk toward Ian. To their astonishment, Patrick Willingly extended his hands toward them while he waited for them to bind his hands. While still struggling to deal with the fact that Patrick was not moved by what they were doing, neither was he interested in what they were doing as he turned to look at Titus who had a scary smile on his face. When the soldiers were done binding Ian, they turned to look at Titus who observed Patrick for a while just to be sur

CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR The moment the soldiers set their eyes on the council member, they stood still while they waited for him to approach. He sauntered toward them from the point where he stood, lifting the edge of his garment as he walked down to them without taking his eyes away from Patrick who was nervously standing with his hands bound together. “I hope I haven’t made a terrible mistake,” Patrick whispered to himself, and then he turned around in search of the General who was still nowhere to be found. At that point, he could only imagine what was going to happen to him if things didn’t go as planned, and his heartbeat increased again as though his heart was attempting to finish up a race. “Lord Zane!” One of the soldiers said as they saluted the council member who stood in front of them with his hands clasped behind him. He observed the soldiers for a while, and when he was done with his observation, he turned to look at Patrick who struggled not to run away at the sight of

CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE When Zane was done with his silent thinking, he sighed for the second time in a short period, and then he turned to look at the soldier who was in charge of the rest of the absence of Arch Tamer George who was still nowhere to be found. “I think you should take him to the dungeons where soulless criminals like him are kept. I am sure that the reptiles in that place would teach him some lessons before he is finally brought in for trial before he faces judgment.” Ian’s heart sunk deeper into his belly as he heard the words from Lord Zane. He turned to look for Arch Tamer George without minding if it was going to seem a bit suspicious. He had heard stories about the dungeon in the palace which was a place of ruin from wars, and also an abode for some of the scariest creatures anyone could think of. The underground dungeon had shut down completely, and sealed with only a hole left open where hardened criminals who were to be handheld were thrown into with chains on

CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX “Move!” Two of the soldiers behind Patrick pushed him toward the passage up the stairs while Lord Zane watched him closely with both hands behind him, his countenance showing signs of intense contempt. Patrick grunted as the soldiers continued pushing him from behind, not minding the fact that he was going up the stairs with his hands bound together. “What is happening? Is that the way to the Royal Palace?” Tamer George appeared from a corner of the palace, glaring at the soldiers who halted instantly with their lips sealed, and their eyes stealing glances at Lord Zane who was facing the gate of the palace. “I am certain that I wasn’t talking to animals! Where were you taking him to? Why isn’t he yet in the Royal Prison?” The General’s tone was resonant, but the soldiers were skeptical about giving him a response, as they were not sure of the best way to present the situation to him.The General and Lord Zane were always at loggerheads with each other, disagreein

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN Tamer George ignored Lord Zane whose countenance showed eagerness to find out what could be going on. He stared at Patrick for a while, and then he sighed softly.“I was told that he was the same young fellow who almost stripped you of your ego. I was told that he almost defeated you in a duel if theEmperor didn't call it to a stop. So much for being the unworthy General of the Army.” Lord Zane scoffed, looking at Titus who managed to get a grip on himself even though the words of the old man really got to him. At that time, Patrick was hoping that the words the General heard from the old man were not going to make him change his mind about the plan they heard. “Silly old man,” Patrick whispered only to his hearing, looking at Lord Zane who saw his mouth move, but wasn’t sure of what he said. “General? Why do I have the feeling that you are going to try to harm this fellow because he won you in a duel even before he faces trial? Am I right, or wrong?” “I have

CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT Patrick continued to pay keen attention while he waited patiently to hear what else the man was going to say. For a while, nothing was heard, and he felt that those were the words of a crazy fellow who was just trying to get his attention. He sighed softly and after he had looked at his bound hands for a while, he took a step backward and looked at the entrance to the prison, hoping that the General was going to show up really soon. “You are still there, aren’t you? You heard everything I said, didn’t you?” The strange man questioned him with a loud tone, but even though he returned to his previous position close to the iron bars to be able to hear all the things he was saying, he refused to give him any response. At that time, it had already occurred to Patrick that he couldn’t trust everyone, not even the General who had left him for a while only to return just when he was about to be thrown into the dungeon. “Have you sworn an oath of silence? Have you bee

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE “I am sorry, Patrick. I had to ensure that none of the other soldiers on patrol had seen you.” “But you should have said something before leaving. The Councilman almost made the guards throw me into the dungeon. I wonder what would have happened if you didn’t show up. Well, I would have fought for myself.” “I am certain of that. Now, can we focus on the reason why I brought you into this place?” Tamer George ignored the fact that he had made a mistake, and then he returned his gaze to look through the hole in the wall. “The guards are not moving. I have to go distract them while you move as fast as you can. I won’t be able to go with you into the King’s Chambers until I have made sure that the guards standing in front of his door are out. You will have to do this alone.” “Wait…” Patrick gently dragged Titus who was about to move toward the guards, stopping him from taking another step. “How am I supposed to know where to go? I don’t even know where the Kin

CHAPTER FORTY Patrick was certain that Lord Zane couldn’t see him, but that didn’t stop the conflict that nestled in his mind from making him feel very nervous. He watched as the councilman approached with slow but steady steps, looking toward his direction with so much suspicion written all over his face. At that time, the soldiers who were moving with him had gotten close to the doors that led into the King’s Chambers, and they stood still, waiting for him to join them. Lord Zane continued to approach, and when he got a few steps close to Patrick, he lifted his robe and gently pulled out a bronze dagger which was strapped to a leather sheath. “What?” Patrick whispered to himself while he watched the councilman hold up the dagger in front of him with his eyes still showing flashes of suspicion and uncertainty. For some reason, Lord Zane could feel the presence of someone around there, but he was unable to tell if the person was gone and if he was still hanging around, with each
