CHAPTER 1: The Last Cultivator Awakens
The world was burning. Towering machines marched across a ruined city, their crimson eyes glowing like stars of destruction. Above them, countless warships filled the heavens while a lone figure stood atop a shattered skyscraper. His robes fluttered in the violent wind. Golden Qi erupted from his body like a raging storm. The armies below trembled. A woman’s voice suddenly echoed through the battlefield. “Kai… run!” she screamed. The young man slowly turned around, there was blood on his hands, tears in his eyes, then everything exploded in blinding light. Kai Ashford suddenly opened his eyes from his sleep. He sat upright on his bed, breathing heavily, and sweat drenched his clothes. The room was dark, only the pale moonlight entered through the curtains. He stared at his trembling hands again, the same dream, the same burning city, the same voice and the same strange feeling of unbearable loneliness. He lowered his head and rubbed his face. “What was that?” he muttered q
CHAPTER 2: The Hunt Begins
Pain, that was the first thing Kai felt. It was not the ordinary kind of pain that came from a bruise or a twisted ankle. It was a deep, burning sensation, as though molten fire had been poured directly into his veins. He collapsed onto the cold stone floor of the underground chamber, clutching his chest. “Agh… what is happening to me?” he cried out, his voice trembling with fear. The golden light around him grew brighter. The ancient book floated in the air, its pages turning by themselves. The strange voice echoed once more. “Spiritual Inheritance initiated…” Then memories that did not belong to him flooded his mind. He saw mountains floating in the sky, he saw men and women flying on swords, cultivators battling giant metallic machines beneath a crimson moon, cities burning, and finally… He saw a man in white robes. The man smiled. For a brief moment, Kai thought it was his master, but it wasn’t. The man slowly raised a hand toward him. Then everything disappeared. Kai gasp
CHAPTER 3: The Mysterious Broker
The crimson eyes of the machine glowed like twin suns in the darkness. Kai’s body froze, his heartbeat pounded so violently that it echoed inside his ears. The machine slowly raised its cannon. A cold mechanical voice filled the underground chamber. “Target confirmed. Beginning extermination protocol.” Kai instinctively took a step backward, his mind was blank. Fight? Run? How do you fight a machine the size of a truck? His trembling fingers tightened around the ancient book, then his phone vibrated with a loud buzz. Unknown Number: “Listen carefully. Panic will kill you faster than the machine.” Kai swallowed hard, his eyes never left the enormous weapon pointed at him. Kai: “Who are you?” The reply appeared almost instantly. Unknown Number: “Later. If you want answers, survive first.” The machine fired beams at Kai. BOOM! A brilliant blue beam exploded from the cannon. Kai’s pupils shrank instantly and without thinking, he threw himself to the side. The beam
CHAPTER 4: First Breakthrough
The shadow on the rooftop never moved. Rain continued to pour over the silent street as Kai stood frozen, pretending to admire the books displayed behind the fogged glass of a nearby bookstore. His heartbeat refused to slow down. He didn’t dare look directly at the figure again, afraid that even the smallest reaction would reveal that he had noticed them. “Calm down,” he told himself. “Panicking is exactly what they want.” His phone suddenly vibrated softly inside his pocket. Unknown Number: “Good. Don’t look at them again.” Kai’s eyes widened ever so slightly. “How does she always know what I’m doing?” he wondered. Another message appeared. Unknown Number: “Walk normally. Turn left at the next intersection. There’s a crowded night market ahead.” Kai obeyed without hesitation. The streets gradually filled with life as he entered the bustling market. Vendors shouted over one another, children laughed while chasing balloons, and the aroma of grilled meat drifted through th
CHAPTER 5: Echoes of the Forgotten Path
The rain had stopped before dawn, but the weight pressing against Kai Ashford’s chest remained. He woke after only a few hours of restless sleep, immediately reaching for his phone on the bedside table. The conversation with the mysterious girl was still gone. Every message had vanished as though it had never existed. He stared at the blank screen for several long seconds before letting out a slow breath. “Did something happen to her?” he muttered quietly, worry creeping into his voice. It was a strange feeling. He had never seen her face, never heard her voice, and didn’t even know her real name, but yet after everything that had happened, the silence felt unsettling. She had saved his life more than once. The thought that she might now be in danger because of him filled him with guilt. Kai forced himself to get dressed and head to work. As he walked through the bustling morning streets, life appeared completely normal. Office workers hurried toward train stations with cups
CHAPTER 6: Shadows Beneath the City
Kai stood motionless outside the old bookstore as the wooden door slowly closed with a long, eerie creak. The lively sounds of the city seemed to disappear the moment the lights inside went out. A cold breeze drifted through the narrow alley, carrying the scent of old paper and rain-soaked wood. He swallowed uneasily, unable to shake the strange feeling that someone, or something, was watching him from within. His fingers instinctively tightened around the jade ring hidden inside his pocket. This place doesn’t feel normal, he thought. Then again… nothing has been normal since I found that book. His phone vibrated suddenly. Unknown Number: “Go inside.” Kai frowned and quickly typed back. Kai: “You said not to follow the girl.” The reply came almost instantly. Unknown Number: “I did but I never said not to enter.” Kai sighed helplessly. “You really enjoy confusing me,” he muttered before pushing open the bookstore door. A tiny brass bell chimed softly overhead. The i
CHAPTER 7: The Hidden Trail
Kai could not take his eyes off the dark monitor. Even after the words *THE GAME HAS BEGUN* disappeared, an unsettling feeling lingered in the hidden library. His mind kept replaying every strange event since he had entered the abandoned district. It had all happened too fast. Only a few days ago, he had been an ordinary young man struggling to pay rent and scrape together odd investigation jobs. Now the government was hunting a cultivator they could not even identify, mysterious hackers were risking their lives to protect him, and some unknown force seemed to already know his true heritage. He exhaled slowly, trying to steady his thoughts. “I feel like everyone knows my story except me,” he said quietly, frustration bleeding into his voice. “I am tired of chasing answers that only create more questions.” Aria looked at him with quiet sympathy before closing several encrypted programs on her screen. “I understand how you feel,” she said softly. “But if I tell you everything now,
CHAPTER 8: Warehouse Seventeen
The words *The First Guardian Arrives* kept glowing on the ancient black book long after the shaking had stopped. Kai stood rooted to the spot, unable to look away from the pages. His pulse raced, fear and excitement tangled together. Ever since he had awakened his Qi, every answer he found seemed to spawn two new mysteries in its place. He tightened his grip on the jade ring, trying to steady himself. My master, he thought. What exactly did you leave behind? And who is waiting outside that door? Across the room, Aria pulled herself together fast. She hurried back to her computers, fingers flying across the keyboard. One by one, the security cameras around the bookstore lit up on her screens. She flipped through every angle, zoomed into every entrance, even switched on thermal imaging, but nothing, no one stood outside. “No visual contact,” she said quietly, unable to fully hide the confusion in her voice. “No heat signature. No movement. It is like whoever knocked is not even
CHAPTER 9: The Qi-Devouring Beast
The mechanical voice echoed through the hidden library, so calm and emotionless it sent a chill down Kai’s spine. *”…To the individual known as the Last Cultivator… we know you are listening.”* Silence followed. Kai looked toward Aria instinctively. She was already moving, fingers racing across the keyboard as streams of code flooded every monitor in the room. One by one she disconnected network cables, shut down wireless receivers, and threw up multiple encrypted firewalls. “That broadcast is not directed at us specifically,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady despite the tension underneath it. “It is being sent out across thousands of frequencies at once.” Kai frowned. “So they do not actually know where I am?” “No,” Aria said immediately. “If they knew, this building would already be surrounded.” Kai let out the breath he had been holding without realizing it. Shen Tian folded his hands behind his back, watching the monitors without a trace of panic on his face.
CHAPTER 10: The Beginning of the Next Hunt
The following morning started like any other. Kai arrived at Blue Lantern Investigations with a paper cup of cheap coffee in one hand and the investigation file tucked under his arm. The office smelled of old documents and printer ink, and for a brief moment he almost managed to forget about Qi, satellites, and government hunters entirely. Almost. His manager looked up from his desk. “Good, you are here,” he said. “Our client called twice already this morning. He is getting impatient.” Kai set the file on the table. “What is so important about a missing package anyway?” he asked. The manager adjusted his glasses. “No idea. The client refused to describe it over the phone. Says he will only explain once you get there.” Sophia wandered over with a teasing smile. “Try not to disappear this time,” she said. Kai laughed, a little awkward. “I will do my best.” She handed him a small lunch box. “You skipped breakfast again.” He looked at the homemade meal, surprised. “You did not
