Lord Vane did not look back when Solveig fell.He and his wife followed the guards dragging Liv from the hall. Most of their men went with them, but ten remained behind to prevent anyone from following.Vargr watched the doors close. Then he stopped crying. The tears disappeared from his face so quickly that one of the Ashkim guards blinked several times, wondering if he had imagined them.Vargr rose from his knee and touched the small cut on his neck.“That man called me an animal,” he said. The ten men from House Vane reached for their weapons.Vargr counted them once.Ten.That was not enough to inconvenience him.His Law-Seal flashed silver beneath his sleeve. Before the first sword left its sheath, a pale light spread across the hall and passed through every one of the men.Their eyes closed. They collapsed at the same time. The Ashkim guards stared at the bodies, then at Vargr.“My lord,” one of them said carefully, “were you not begging for your life a moment ago?”“I was being

The gates of Valhalla opened before Kaedric reached them. The guards had seen the whirlwind coming from a great distance, and several weapons were already raised. The moment Kaedric stepped out of the fading wind, every weapon dropped.“My lord!”The guards cleared the entrance at once.Kaedric walked through the gates with the unconscious woman in his arms. Sigrid followed closely behind him, holding the baby against her chest. One of the guards looked at the blood covering the woman’s clothes and began shouting.“Get the High Healer!”“Bring a stretcher!” another guard ordered. “And clear the eastern hall!”Several men rushed towards Kaedric, but he stepped away before they could take the woman from him.“No one touches her yet.”They stopped immediately, while Sigrid tightened her hold on the baby. She had finally learned how to carry him without feeling as though one careless step would send him flying from her arms. Unfortunately, everyone around her had now started running, shou

The Valkyrie crossed the room without looking at anyone else. Each step carried her closer to Kaedric, and the heat around her grew stronger. Sigrid wanted to move farther away, but the wall behind her had refused to create more space.Kaedric remained where he was.The Valkyrie stopped directly in front of him.“Is that your wife?”She pointed towards the woman lying inside the Astral Restoration Circle.“No,” Kaedric answered. “She is someone I was moved to help.”“And the child?”Every person in the room became silent.“The child belongs to her.”The fire in the Valkyrie’s eyes did not disappear.“News has already travelled through the entire High Hall that you returned without warning, carrying your dying wife while another woman held your dying child.”Sigrid looked down at the baby.He was not dying. He had even begun pulling at the edge of her cloak with one small hand, but she decided this was not the right moment to correct anyone.“What kind of man allows his family to reach

Kaedric and the Valkyrie had barely left the healer’s room when she spoke. “I was about to send for you. If you had not come today, I would have gone to Ashkim myself.” Kaedric looked at her. “What for?” “To ask why you have spent more than a week in Ashkim doing nothing.” Kaedric gave her a sharp look. “Doing nothing?” “The people who killed your parents are still free. Everything they took from House Ashbane is still in their hands. Your family is almost gone, yet you walk around Ashkim as if none of that concerns you.” “I do not understand what you mean,” Kaedric said. He continued walking, but his steps were faster now. The Valkyrie followed him. “Of course you understand. I never knew you to run from important questions.” Kaedric stopped. “I am sorry,” he said as he turned to her. His voice was calm, but the look in his eyes made her go silent. “I will always be grateful that you took me in and trained me. I will never forget what you did for me. But one reason I staye

Kaedric had refused to believe those words. He had thought Rothgar was trying to drag other people into his punishment. But now, the memory of that night returned. He remembered the rain beating against the house. He remembered his father falling to the floor with a sword buried in his chest. The man holding the sword had twisted it, and the pain on his father’s face had followed Kaedric for years.Rothgar had been there. He had been shouting. He had been laughing and talking about the end of House Ashbane. But he had not been the man holding the sword. There had been another man standing over Kaedric’s father. And behind that man, someone else had been smiling.Kaedric stopped walking. His chest began to hurt. He pressed a hand against it, but the pain continued to spread through his body.Rothgar had taken the blame because he was proud of what happened. And Kaedric was realizing painfully now that he had allowed one man’s confession to carry everything. Because one enemy was easier

Liv had not stopped for even a second to think about what she had done.Perhaps she should have. She had offered herself to one of the most dangerous families in the Northern Reaches and had actually looked Lord Vane in the face while doing it. There were probably several sensible thoughts she should be having about that right now.Liv was having none of them.Solveig was safe.Vargr was safe. Those were the two things going through her head as the carriage carried her farther away from Kaedric’s estate.Somehow, despite everything that had happened today, she had managed to keep Solveig from being taken back by her family. Vargr had also kept his head attached to his body, which had not looked very certain when Lord Vane pressed a sword against his neck. That meant she had done something useful.Liv leaned back slightly and tried not to look too pleased with herself, especially with two of Lord Vane’s guards sitting across from her. And, Solveig. What a ridiculous woman.Only that mo

“Please, do not.”The words left Liv’s mouth before the guard even touched her.Lady Vane looked at her without saying anything.“Please,” Liv continued. “You can take me anywhere else. There is no reason to bring my father into this.”One of the guards grabbed her arm and pulled her away from the carriage.Liv fought against him immediately.“I can walk by myself!”The guard ignored her.He dragged her towards the estate gates while Liv dug her feet into the ground, trying to slow him down. The last time she had seen her father, she had been standing safely behind the gates of Kaedric’s estate. His guards had surrounded her. His name had been enough to make her feel brave. She had called her father an old dog and ordered the guards to throw him into the street. It had felt wonderful at the time. Now she was standing in front of her family’s estate without Kaedric, Vargr or a single person who would take her side.It began to feel as if all the courage she had shown that morning had b

Halvard had gone to Kaedric’s estate that morning and demanded to be allowed inside. Liv had insulted him before his own guards and ordered Kaedric’s men to throw him into the street. If he came back and found her here, there was no telling what he would do.Being executed by House Vane was suddenly beginning to look like the kinder death.“My husband will be here soon!”Liv’s voice rose across the yard.Every conversation stopped.Lord Vane halted.Lady Vane slowly turned towards her.Even the guard holding Liv’s arm became still.Liv raised her head. Her eyes were wet, and her heart was beating so loudly that she could hear it, but she forced herself to stand straight.“I do not think you want to be here when he arrives.”Lady Vane’s eyes narrowed.“Are you threatening us?”“I am warning you.”A few members of the Halvard line gasped.Liv’s uncle looked ready to disappear into the ground. No one spoke to the heads of House Vane that way and remained healthy enough to finish the conv

While Liv stood trapped inside her family’s estate, Kaedric had already followed the young girl into the lower market. He did not remember most of the walk. The Valkyrie’s words were still moving through his mind. They would do the same thing to Astrid?Impossible! His father had allowed too many things to happen. He had trusted people who should never have been trusted and ignored dangers until they entered his home.Kaedric would never make those mistakes! His life was already moving in a completely different direction. Anyone who looked at him now would find it difficult to believe he had come from the same man.The Valkyrie had insulted him by suggesting otherwise.Kaedric was still fighting with those thoughts when something touched his arm.He looked down.A woman was rubbing scented oil across the back of his hand.Kaedric stared at her.The woman looked up at him and smiled.Only then did Kaedric finally notice what was happening around him.At least twenty women had gathered

The smile on the girl’s face reduced.“He died two years ago. He used to carve the hairpins while my mother prepared the oils. Since he died, it has only been the two of us.”She lowered her head.“But I should not trouble you with that, my lord. You have already done more than enough for us.”Kaedric continued staring at the dragon.“Then why do you still keep the things he made?” he demanded. “He left you here with nothing. You and your mother can barely survive without him, yet you continue carrying his work around as though he did something worthy of honour.”Fear appeared on the girl’s face.“I am sorry, my lord. I will throw it away if—”“Let me tell you about my father,” Kaedric cut in sharply. “He died six years ago. Do you know why? Because he could not protect himself.”The girl took a frightened step backwards.“He allowed his enemies to enter his home. Then he died and passed everything he should have handled down to me. His unfinished battles became mine. His enemies beca
