“The moment you allowed those childish thoughts of revenge into your head, you made enemies of us,” the man said.Fire glowed inside his eyes. It spread slowly towards his temples, as though his entire body was waiting for one excuse to burst into flames.Kaedric looked at him for a moment, then lowered the cloth bag from his arm and placed it carefully on the ground.“I am sorry about that,” he said. “What would you like me to do now?”The question took the men by surprise. Several of them looked at one another, unsure whether Kaedric was mocking them or truly asking. The man’s expression hardened. “You think we came here merely to tell you not to think about your dead parents?”“I assumed there was more,” Kaedric replied. “It would be strange to gather this many men because I remembered them for a moment.”“You fool! This is the part where you fall to your knees. You will ask what your parents did to us, and then you will ask how you can repay their sins.”A dry chuckle left Kaedric

The first man tried to run.Kaedric’s tail struck the road behind him and threw him back into the circle. The others attacked at once. Machetes covered in red, blue and silver magic flew towards Kaedric from every direction. Some aimed for his eyes. Others struck at the spaces beneath his wings.None reached him.One sweep of his wing broke their formation. Men flew across the road and crashed into walls, trees and one another. The runes beneath their feet shattered.Kaedric moved through them before they could rebuild it.Claws tore armour apart. Golden fire passed across the ground in narrow lines, burning weapons out of hands without touching the buildings beside the road. Every attempt to surround him ended with more men on the ground.Farther back, three senior members of the group watched in disbelief.“Did you know he could do this?” one demanded.“Of course not!” another snapped. “Where did he get a dragon form?”The third man said nothing. They had come to frighten Kaedric, w

Kaedric did not return to the Valkyrie immediately. He was still angry, and he had no desire to sit before her while her warning about his parents continued proving itself correct.Instead, he took the longer road through the market outside Valhalla. He walked without paying attention to the people around him until a display of hairpins made him stop. One had been carved into the shape of a tiny golden dragon. Its wings opened around a red stone no larger than a grain of rice.Astrid would love it.Beside it was another hairpin made from dark wood. A small silver wing curved around its edge.He pictured it in Liv’s hair.Kaedric approached the stall and pointed at both.“I want these.”The woman behind the table looked at the hairpins. “Eight copper pieces, my lord.”Kaedric reached beneath his cloak. His hand stopped. He checked the other side, then the small inner pocket near his belt.Nothing.For all the battles he had fought and all the realms he had crossed, it had never occurre

Kaedric remained still beneath the blanket. He had never heard his father sound that way before. There was no command in his voice, no confidence. Instead, he sounded really tired.“They told us that if we took her there, she would begin to see within two years,” his mother whispered. “It has been five years. Five years, and she still cannot—”Her voice broke.Kaedric heard his father move closer to her.“I am sorry,” he said. “I am the one who made you endure this.”“No. I just…” His mother struggled to breathe through her tears. “She should not be going through any of this. She is only a child, my lord. She is only a child.”“I know.”“Then bring her home.”Silence followed. When his father answered, his voice was even lower.“Keeping her away is the only reason she is alive. If our enemies learn that House Ashbane has a blind daughter hidden beneath its protection, they will use her against us. They will take her, and every decision we make afterward will belong to them.”His moth

Liv stared at the Guardian dragon.Fear moved through her before relief could follow it.The silver beast stood in the middle of Halvard’s courtyard, its wings folded against its sides while every person around it kept a careful distance. The last time anyone had seen it, the dragon had carried Kaedric away. Why had it returned alone?Had something happened to him?“Well?” Gunnhild’s voice cut across the courtyard. “Continue with those empty threats you were making a moment ago!”Liv turned towards her.Gunnhild started down the steps, anger pushing her faster than her body could manage. She took one step too many. Her leg shook beneath her, and she fell flat in front of everyone. For a moment, even the dragon was forgotten.Gunnhild stared at the ground in shock. Then she noticed every eye on her.“I have been ill because of the suffering this girl put me through!” she snapped as two guards hurried towards her. “Look at what she has reduced me to!”Liv’s uncle frowned, although he di

Solveig opened her eyes inside a room she did not recognise. For several seconds, she stared at the dark ceiling and tried to remember where she was. Then she turned her head and saw a half-dressed man standing near the washstand. She shut her eyes again. Her parents had made sure she never saw a man without his clothes properly fastened. Even paintings of warriors in her childhood books had somehow worn more cloth than Vargr was wearing now.Solveig slowly opened one eye.He was still there.Vargr had removed his upper garment while cleaning the cut Lord Vane’s sword had left across his neck. His back was turned to her, but that did not make the situation acceptable.Solveig pressed two fingers against the bed. A thin silver line spread beneath her hand, moved across the floor and touched the ward carved above the door. The answer entered her mind. She was still in Ashkim.Memory returned at once. Her parents...The guards dragging Liv away.Solveig sat up with a scream.Vargr turned

“Mother, where have you been?”Astrid stood in the middle of her room with her arms folded. Her small face carried far more anger than a six-year-old should have been able to gather.Liv stopped in the doorway.“You and Father both went out without me,” Astrid continued. “Where is he? I want to see him.”“It is not like that, my love. Your father had somewhere important to go, and I—”“Where is he?” Astrid looked behind Liv, as though Kaedric might be hiding in the hallway.“He will return soon.”Liv glanced at the maids. “Has she been giving all of you trouble?”“No, my lady,” one answered quickly. “She has been showing us how she can use a sword. And she even…”The maid began laughing and pointed towards another young woman near the window.Liv looked at Astrid. “What did you do?”“Only this.”Astrid raised two fingers and snapped them.A tiny flame appeared above her fingertips. It was not red or orange. It was gold. Before Liv could move, Astrid touched the flame to the edge of he

In five more hours, Halvard and his hired men would have spent an entire day inside the private room above the tavern. At first, Halvard had enjoyed the wait.He had ordered wine, roasted meat and enough sweet cakes for a celebration. The man he sent to watch Kaedric’s estate was supposed to return with news the moment the Guardian came home. Then Halvard would begin the next part of his plan.He was going to become the father-in-law of the Lord of Ashkim. That position alone would place him above almost every noble who had ever refused to respect him.He had already imagined the stories he would tell.He would tell everyone that he had protected Liv when she became pregnant. He would say he refused to disown her even when the other families demanded it. He would describe the sacrifices he made for Astrid and how he always knew Kaedric would return.Every word would be a lie.But once he stood beside the Guardian, who would dare call him a liar?No one.He would walk through Ashkim wh

“Becoming the Guardian was not the end of your growth,” the Valkyrie said. “It was the beginning of a different kind.”She raised one hand. The air before her opened into five circles of golden writing. They stood inside one another, each larger and brighter than the one before it. Strange beasts moved between some of the lines, appearing for a moment before disappearing again.Kaedric studied them. The Valkyrie touched the smallest circle at the centre.“This is where you are now. The First Awakening of the Realm-Heart. It is called the Realm’s Pulse.”The circle opened, showing a figure standing upon a web of roots. Hundreds of small lights burned around him.“This is what answered you inside the Rootway,” she continued. “At this awakening, Midgard allows you to feel the lives standing upon its land. Fear, pain and death can reach you through the ground if the realm believes you must hear them.”“The roots opened because Midgard chose to help you,” she added. “You did not command th

Kaedric did not answer immediately. An immortal Ashbane. For generations, members of his family had gathered wealth, raised children and rebuilt whatever their enemies destroyed. Then someone came with a blade, and another part of the bloodline disappeared. His grandparents had died that way. His parents had died that way too.If he reached the Eternal Heart, the pattern would end with him.No man hiding in the rain would ever again believe that one sword was enough to erase House Ashbane.“What happens to Astrid if I ascend?” he asked. The Valkyrie smiled as though she had been waiting for that question.“The blood of an ascended Guardian does not remain ordinary. What awakens fully in you will sleep inside your direct line. Your daughter already carries more of your dragon-blood than you understand. When her own power calls to it, it will answer.”Kaedric thought of the image he had shown her earlier. Astrid’s face. Liv’s eyes. His own stubbornness sitting inside a six-year-old body
