QUIET WATERS
MONTIEL TOWNTHE BARBERSHOPMONDAY, 6:00 PMMr. Emerson locked the front door twice that evening, testing the handle both times, though nothing about the empty street outside gave him any real reason to. He stood behind the counter a while longer after the second check, running the stranger's words back through his mind. Guess it'd be a shame if anything ever happened to it.He thought of calling someone. A lawyer, perhaps, though he wasn't entirely certain what he'd even be asking one to look into. A threat with no name attached to it, delivered by a man who had said nothing technically threatening at all, wasn't the kind of thing that held up to daylight scrutiny. He knew that. He also knew, with the particular certainty of a man who had survived harder years than most people in this town remembered, that some threats were built precisely to hold up to nothing, and to work anyway. He decided, finally, to do the only thing that had ever reliably worked for him. He would watch. He wou

A FACE FROM THE PAST
The dinner had been arranged with only two days' notice, the kind of last minute request that had become, over the past several weeks, less unusual than Juliet would have liked. Mrs. Cole delivered the guest count that morning with her usual brisk efficiency, six for dinner, formal service, gentlemen only, no need for the good china since it wouldn't be a long evening.Juliet planned the menu without much thought, the kind of simple, elegant meal that required competence rather than imagination, and spent the afternoon moving through her kitchen with the easy confidence that had, slowly, over the past months, become genuinely hers rather than something she was still only borrowing. Ricardo prepped the vegetables beside her, humming his usual off key tune, and for most of the afternoon the day felt like any other, ordinary in the particular way that only a life finally settled into its own rhythm can feel ordinary. At 6:15, she carried the first course toward the dining room herself, B

FRAGMENTS
MONTIEL TOWN. FRIDAY, 9:40 PMJuliet waited until Ariana had gone to bed before she finally dialed the number, the time difference meaning it would be early afternoon on Josephine's side of the world, a decent hour to ask the kind of question that had been sitting unspoken between them for years. She sat at the kitchen table with the lights dimmed low, a cup of tea cooling untouched in front of her, rehearsing the question one final time before she let herself press call.Josephine answered on the third ring, her voice bright with surprise. "This is a nice surprise. Everything is all right?""I need to ask you something." Juliet kept her voice low, though the house was empty of anyone who might overhear. "About Project Mobasa."The silence on the other end lasted long enough that Juliet wondered if the call had dropped."Why are you asking about that now," Josephine finally said, her earlier brightness gone entirely."Because I saw Mr. Dawson at a dinner here. At the mansion. He said

THE NAME SHE ALMOST MISSED
MONTIEL TOWNJULIET'S HOMEWEDNESDAY, 7:30 PM"How's the studying going?" Juliet asked, setting a plate down in front of Ariana, the ordinary rhythm of dinner offering a welcome distraction from the thoughts that had followed her home from the mansion three days running now."Good, actually. Better than I expected." Ariana reached for her fork, a small, private smile crossing her face that Juliet had learned, over the past several weeks, to recognize without needing it explained. "Johnson's been a real help with the physics section. I'm starting to understand things I thought I'd never understand.""Johnson." Juliet said the name idly, more out of habit than curiosity, reaching for her own plate. "Your study partner. The one you never talk about, except somehow you talk about him every single evening."Ariana flushed slightly. "We're just friends, Mum.""I didn't say otherwise." Juliet allowed herself a small, knowing smile, grateful for a conversation that carried nothing heavier tha

A VISIT WITH NO GOOD REASON
MONTIEL TOWNSATURDAY, 11:00 AMJuliet told herself, walking down the familiar stretch of the old market road, that she was simply picking up a jacket Ariana had left at Johnson's place after a late study session, a plausible enough errand that she'd volunteered for it herself the night before without letting herself examine too closely why.The truth sat closer to the surface than she liked. She needed to see the place. She needed to see the man whose life sat somewhere inside a folder on a billionaire's desk, needed to understand, in whatever small way an ordinary visit could offer, exactly what she was trying to protect before she decided what, if anything, she was brave enough to do about it.She had rehearsed a version of the conversation twice already on the walk over, imagining herself saying it plainly, there's a plan to take this street, I've seen the papers myself, and had abandoned both versions before she'd even reached the corner, unable to picture any way of saying it th

WHAT HE FINALLY SAID
MONTIEL TOWNTHE BARBERSHOPSUNDAY, 9:00 PMThe shop had been closed for an hour when Mr. Emerson finally called Johnson down from the basement, his voice carrying a weight Johnson hadn't heard in it for a long time, not since the night he'd sat him down to explain, gently and carefully, exactly what an orphan actually meant."Sit," Emerson said, gesturing toward the barber's chair usually reserved for customers.Johnson sat, studying his guardian's face, the particular stillness there that always meant something important was coming, something Emerson had clearly spent a long while deciding how to say. The shop around them had gone quiet in the particular way it only went quiet after hours, the mirrors dark, the chairs empty, the ordinary hum of the day's business replaced by something heavier settling into the corners of the room."Three weeks ago," Emerson began, "a man came into the shop. Well dressed, polite, asked a few ordinary questions about how long we'd been here." He pause
