CHAPTER 21: INTO THE ABYSS
"I am not letting you die in this empty, godforsaken void!"The scream ripped through Chen Mo’s lungs, raw and laced with pure terror, as he watched Meng Yao fall toward the swirling black abyss. The spatial tear was expanding like a hungry maw, swallowing entire islands of granite, its gravitational pull dragging her limp body into the dark."Mo... stop!" Meng Yao’s faint voice floated back to him through the rushing, weightless wind. "The gap... it's too wide... you can't reach me!""Shut up!" he roared, his amber eyes burning with frantic desperation. "Don't you dare talk like that!"In his fist, the golden dragon key sizzled violently. The spatial runes along its metallic surface flared white-hot, hairline cracks spiderwebbing across the dragon emblem. The key was overheating, breaking down under the strain of the collapsing dimension. If it shattered before they reached a exit point, they would be sealed in this rotting realm forever."Mo, the key!" Meng Yao cried out, her eyes w
CHAPTER 22: UNWELCOMED SOIL
"Of all the places in this miserable world that broken key could have dropped us, it had to be my personal hell."Meng Yao’s ragged whisper cut through the damp, heavy silence as she pushed herself up from the wet mud. Shadowed canopy trees towered above them, their black needles blotting out the sky and dripping cold condensate onto the rot-covered forest floor."Yao... where are we?" Chen Mo wheezed, lying flat on his back a few feet away. His body was covered in violent spatial cuts, his breath coming in ragged, painful gasps as he struggled to sit up. "This air... it tastes like poison.""Get down! Don't move!" Meng Yao hissed, dropping to her knees and violently shoving his broad shoulder back into the mud. Her hands were shaking as she scanned the surrounding darkness, her gray eyes wild with absolute panic. "Do not unleash your aura, Mo. Not even a single spark.""What's wrong?" Chen Mo gritted out, looking up at her pale face. "Yao, tell me.""Look at the carvings on those tre
CHAPTER 23: GHOSTS OF THE PAST
"If you move so much as an inch, I will plunge this drench-blade straight through your heart."Meng Yao’s icy breath brushed against the back of a sentry’s neck in the pitch-black shadow behind the main staging tent. Before the soldier could gasp, her slender fingers twisted his windpipe, lowering his limp body silently into the mud."Yao, wait," Chen Mo whispered from the edge of the treeline, his amber eyes wide with concern as he pulled at her wrist. His feverish skin was still radiating dangerous heat. "You're going in there alone. It's a trap.""We don't have a choice, Mo," she urged, her gray eyes dark and hollow as she turned to face him. "Your shoulder is infected with spatial rot. You need the void-lotus salve from my old division's armory, or your arm dies by morning.""I don't care about my arm!" he hissed softly, gripping her hands in his. "I care about you walking into a pit of snakes!""I am a snake, Mo," she murmured, a fragile, bitter smile touching her lips. "I grew u
CHAPTER 24: THE SERPENT'S LIE
"You are lying to me, you miserable, hollow old bastard!"Meng Yao’s scream tore through the suffocating air of the command tent, a raw sound of pure, unadulterated agony. Her gray eyes dilated with terror and disbelief, her chest heaving as she clawed wildly at Elder Viper’s arm pressed against her windpipe."Am I lying, little viper?" Viper sneered, his yellow eyes glinting with sadistic delight as he leaned closer, his cold breath foul against her cheek. "Do you remember the night the snow burned red? Do you remember the silver crest on the sword that pierced your mother's heart?""No... no, shut up!" she choked out, tears bursting from her eyes and tracking hot paths through the dirt on her face. "It was the Blood River Clan! You told me... you swore to me they wiped out my family!""We needed you focused," Viper chuckled, his bony hand tightening around her neck, cutting off her air. "We needed a little girl filled with pure
CHAPTER 25: SILENT SLAUGHTER
"Do not leave a single one of them breathing."Meng Yao’s command was barely a whisper, but it carried the weight of a dying sun. Standing in the heart of the ruined command tent, ash raining around her like black snow, her gray eyes had turned completely dead. The tears tracking through the soot on her cheeks were the only proof she was still human."Whatever you need, Yao," Chen Mo said, his voice heavy, dark, and absolute. "I am right behind you."Elder Viper spat blood onto the burning embers, scrambling backward into the shadows of the outer perimeter. "Kill them! Sentries, slay the girl! Cut down the beast!"A dozen heavily armed guards surged into the clearing from the surrounding barracks tents, their iron blades drawn. Before the lead enforcer could even draw a breath to sound his horn, Chen Mo moved. He didn't issue a challenge. He didn't ask questions. He simply launched his massive frame forward, his black-scaled rig
CHAPTER 26: WALL OF IRON
"If my fists tear my own flesh to bone, I will still smash through every bastard in our way."Chen Mo’s harsh promise echoed against the towering rock walls of the narrow mountain pass. Wind whipped through the ravine, carrying the bitter stench of ozone and crushed iron."Mo, stop!" Meng Yao yelled, her voice raw as she tried to pull him back by his belt. "Look at their formation! That isn't standard steel!"Ahead of them, sixteen massive warriors in heavy, black-iron plate stood shoulder-to-shoulder, completely blocking the narrow gap. In their hands, heavy tower shields overlapped to form an unbroken barrier. Etched across the iron surface, glowing blue runes pulsed in sync, creating a shimmering, distortion-filled wall of pure spatial kinetic energy."Hold the line!" the Guard Captain shouted from behind the iron wall. "Let the beast strike! The spatial deflection array will bounce his own strength right back into his chest!"<
CHAPTER 27: THE VALLEY AFLAME
"If we blow this room, we burn half the mountain with it, and I am completely fine with that."Meng Yao’s ragged whisper carried a terrifying, icy certainty as she kicked open the iron gates of the Sect's primary spiritual supply armory. The vast cavern hummed with unstable power, lined with towering wooden shelves holding thousands of volatile, raw spirit-crystals. Glowing blue and crimson light washed over their blood-stained faces."Are you sure about this, Yao?" Chen Mo panted, leaning heavily against her shoulder. His right arm was a shredded mess of split scales and blood, his fractured collarbone throbbing with every shallow breath. "If these crystals ignite all at once...""They will draw every guard in the valley away from the mountain pass," she interrupted, turning to look at him, her gray eyes burning with fierce determination. "It gives us our only path to the Poison River. Can you hold out a little longer?""I go where you go," he gritted out, forcing his legs to stay st
CHAPTER 28: SHADOWS IN THE MIST
"You look pathetic, little viper. Crawling through the mud like a wounded worm."Elder Viper's voice slithered through the thick, poisonous mist that clung to the riverbank. His yellow eyes glowed like twin lanterns in the fog, tracking their every movement with predatory patience.Meng Yao's hand tightened around her dagger. Her knuckles went white."Get behind me, Yao," Chen Mo rasped, his shredded arm hanging useless at his side. His back was a ruin of blistered scales and weeping burns from the explosion. Every breath came out wet and shallow."No.""Yao, please.""I said no." She stepped forward, positioning herself between Chen Mo and the mist. Her voice dropped low, trembling with barely contained fury. "This is my fight, Mo. He made me into this. He killed my family. He doesn't get to hide behind shadows anymore."Viper laughed. The sound echoed off the canyon walls, multiplying, distorting, coming from everywhere and nowhere at once."How touching. The broken little doll has
CHAPTER 29: AWAKENING OF THE DRAGON-SPINE
The poison was in his blood. He could feel it moving. A cold, creeping river of black rot that flooded his veins and turned his muscles to stone. Chen Mo's eyes were closed, but he could hear everything. The wet crunch of Meng Yao's body hitting the mud. The sickening crack of Viper's boot connecting with her ribs. The ragged, desperate sound of her breath as she tried to get back up. She was still fighting. Even now. Even with her arms shaking and her face bleeding and her body screaming for her to stop. She was still fighting. "You were always such a stubborn little thing," Viper said, his voice floating through the mist like smoke. "Do you remember what I used to tell you? An obedient weapon is a sharp weapon. A disobedient one gets thrown away." The sound of another blow. Meng Yao's strangled cry. Chen Mo's fingers twitched in
CHAPTER 30: SINGLE FLARE
Elder Viper lay crumpled in the mud, his jaw hanging loose, blood pooling beneath his broken face. His yellow eyes stared up at Meng Yao with something that might have been fear. Might have been recognition. Might have been the first honest thing he'd ever shown her. "Go on then," he gurgled through shattered teeth. "Do it. Kill your master." Meng Yao looked down at him. Her hands were shaking. Her ribs were screaming. She could barely stand upright without her vision swimming. But she was still standing. "You made me watch them die," she said. Her voice was quiet. Hollow. Completely empty. "You made me watch my father bleed out on the snow. You made me watch my mother's eyes go blank. You made me watch my little sister..." She couldn't finish the sentence. The words got stuck somewhere in her throat. "I was just following orders,"
