They called him the empty vessel, a useless stain on a lineage of gods. While his cousins fractured the heavens with their golden qi, Chen Mo could not even light his first meridian, his body rejecting the very essence of modern cultivation. But when Chen Mo bleeds, the earth does not drink his blood, it cowers. Hidden deep within his chest is the Primordial Bloodline, an ancient, volatile power that his clan has not seen in ten thousand years, and one that requires the brutal, forbidden trials of the Forbidden Mountain to wake. To survive the hunts of rival sects and the deep-seated jealousy of his own kin, Chen Mo must plunge into a crucible of violence, hunting demonic beasts and tearing power from their carcasses. But as the dragon-tiger roar begins to echo from his soul, a terrifying truth emerges: his own family does not want a savior, they want a sacrifice. Caught between a grandfather who wants to harvest his heart and a demonic sect that fears him as the harbinger of the end times, Chen Mo races toward the final Heaven and Earth Tribulation. He is left with a devastating choice: succumb to the primordial rage and watch the world burn, or sacrifice his humanity to save the very people who broke him.

CHAPTER 1: THE ASH OF AWAKENING

"Step up, Chen Mo, unless you want to prove to the entire province that you are nothing but a hollow shell."

Chen Feng’s voice cut through the heavy silence of the courtyard, dripping with absolute malice. He stood near the center stage, his gold embroidered robes catching the morning light, his face twisted in a smug, confident grin.

Chen Mo kept his eyes on the stone tiles, his fists clenched so tightly his fingernails bit into his palms. The silence of the gathered clan members felt like a physical weight pressing down on his shoulders. He could hear the quiet snickers of the outer disciples, the rustle of silk as the elders leaned forward in their high chairs, and the steady, agonizing drip of his own sweat hitting the floor.

"Do not make us wait all day," the testing elder barked, his voice echoing off the high stone walls. "The ancestral stone demands your touch, boy."

Chen Mo took a slow, trembling breath. He looked up, his gaze sweeping past the sneering face of his cousin Chen Feng, searching the row of seated elders. He found his father, Chen Lian, sitting in the second high chair.

"Father," Chen Mo whispered, his voice cracking under the strain. "Please. Just give me one more day to align my meridians. I know I can do it."

Chen Lian did not look at him. His father’s gaze remained fixed on the gold gilded teacup in his hands, his expression as cold and unyielding as carved ice. He took a slow sip, completely ignoring his son’s plea.

"Your father has already wasted enough resources on your useless body," Chen Feng scoffed, taking a step forward to block Chen Mo’s view. "Touch the stone and let everyone see what we already know. You are a parasite, Mo. A blot on our lineage."

"I am a son of the main line," Chen Mo said, his voice rising as anger began to burn through his fear. "I have as much right to the test as you do."

"Then prove it," Chen Feng challenged, gesturing toward the massive, jagged pillar of black obsidian at the center of the courtyard. "Let us see the great light of the youngest heir. Show us your dragon qi. Or are you too terrified of the truth?"

Chen Mo pushed past his cousin, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He walked up the stone steps, each step feeling like a mile. The obsidian stone loomed over him, cold and silent, still whispering with the residual gold and blue light of the disciples who had gone before him.

Chen Mo closed his eyes. He placed his palms flat against the dark, polished surface.

He poured everything he had into his hands. He searched deep inside his chest, begging his body to find even a single spark of spiritual energy, a single thread of qi to ignite the stone. He squeezed his eyes shut so hard his face ached.

"Please," he prayed to the ancestors. "Just a spark. Just let them see me."

A second passed. Then five. Then ten.

The stone remained dead black. It did not glow. It did not pulse. It reflected nothing but his own pale, sweaty face and the desperate, pathetic look in his eyes.

"A complete void," the testing elder announced, his tone flat and utterly disappointed. "No qi. No awakened meridians. He is a completely empty vessel."

The courtyard erupted into a wave of harsh, mocking laughter.

"I knew it," a disciple shouted from the back. "He is a cripple."

"A waste of spiritual pills," another sneered.

Chen Mo stood frozen, his hands still pressed against the icy stone. He could not move. His breath came in short, shallow gasps. He turned slowly, his eyes wide as he looked back at the elders’ seats.

"Father," Chen Mo cried out, taking a step toward the platform. "The stone is wrong. I felt something, I swear. My chest, it burns. Just let me try one more time. Please."

Chen Lian finally stood up. He adjusted his heavy crimson robes, his face a mask of disgust. He did not look at Chen Mo. He looked directly at the Grand Elder.

"He is no longer my responsibility," Chen Lian said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent courtyard. "The main line has no room for those who cannot cultivate. Do with him what you will."

"Father, no," Chen Mo gasped, his voice breaking. "You cannot do this. I am your son. Look at me. Please, just look at me."

"I have no son on this stage," Chen Lian said.

The words hit Chen Mo like a physical blow, knocking the wind from his lungs. He stumbled back, his vision blurring with hot, stinging tears. The coldness in his father’s eyes was worse than any blade.

"See to it that he is removed," Grand Elder Chen Jue commanded from his throne, waving a dismissive hand. "He is a distraction to the real disciples."

Chen Feng stepped in front of Chen Mo, his eyes gleaming with sadistic joy. "You heard them, Mo. You do not belong here. You never did."

"You did this," Chen Mo hissed, his grief turning into a sudden, vicious rage. "You poisoned my herbal baths. You blocked my spiritual paths before the ceremony. I know you did."

"Of course I did," Chen Feng leaned close, his voice dropping to a whisper that only Chen Mo could hear. "And who will believe you? You are a broken dog, Chen Mo. And dogs belong in the dirt."

Chen Feng turned to the outer disciples waiting at the edge of the platform. "Take this trash to the muddy stables. He is polluting our ancestral ground. Let him sleep with the beasts where he belongs."

"No, stay away from me," Chen Mo yelled, backing away as three large disciples approached him.

One of them lunged forward. Chen Mo threw a wild, desperate punch, but the disciple easily dodged it and drove a heavy fist straight into Chen Mo’s stomach.

Chen Mo collapsed to his knees, vomiting bile onto the clean stone tiles.

"Get up, little master," the lead disciple mocked, grabbing Chen Mo by his hair and dragging him down the stone steps.

"Let me go," Chen Mo choked out, his fingers clawing at the stone, leaving faint, bloody trails on the polished steps. "Let me go."

"Save your breath, trash," the disciple laughed, kicking him hard in the ribs.

They dragged him through the grand gates, down the dirt path, and threw him headfirst into the muddy, foul-smelling ancestral stables. Chen Mo hit the wet ground hard, sliding through the cold mud and rotting straw.

"Do not let us see your face near the main estate again," the disciple warned, spitting on Chen Mo’s back. "If you try to come back, we will bury you under the dirt instead of just throwing you in it."

They slammed the heavy wooden gates shut, locking him in the dark, damp stable yard.

Chen Mo lay in the mud, his body aching from the kicks, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the howling void in his chest. His father’s voice repeated in his mind like a curse.

"I have no son."

"Why," Chen Mo whispered into the dirt, his voice trembling with a mix of agony and hatred. "Why am I like this? What did I do wrong?"

He dug his fingers into the cold, wet earth, his body shaking with silent, violent sobs. He hated them. He hated Chen Feng. He hated his father. He hated the very heavens that had abandoned him to this humiliation.

He tried to push himself up against a wooden post, but his foot slipped in the mud. He fell forward, his hand scraping violently against a sharp, solid object buried beneath the wet straw.

He gasped, pulling his hand back. A deep, jagged cut had opened across his palm.

Blood, dark and strangely thick, began to pour from the wound, dripping directly onto a rusted, broken metal object protruding from the dirt.

It was an old, sacrificial blade, half buried and covered in decades of filth.

But as Chen Mo’s blood hit the rusted metal, the blood did not run off. The blade greedily drank it. The deep orange rust began to sizzle and dissolve, revealing a polished, obsidian black surface underneath that glowed with a faint, dangerous light.

"What is this," Chen Mo muttered, staring at his palm.

The bleeding did not stop, but the pain of the cut vanished. Instead, a terrifying, burning heat began to travel up his arm, rushing straight toward his chest. His heart gave a massive, painful thud, shaking his entire frame.

The ground beneath the stables suddenly gave a low, heavy shudder.

The horses in the nearby stalls went dead silent, backing into the corners of their enclosures, their eyes wide with absolute terror.

The vibration in the earth grew stronger, pulsing in perfect, terrifying rhythm with Chen Mo’s own racing heart. He clutched his chest, gasping for air as his blood began to boil.

Then, a voice, deep, ancient, and layered with the terrifying echo of a thousand roaring beasts, spoke directly inside his mind.

"Return."
