The sun came up over the harbor at six forty-one on Saturday morning, and William Vance opened his eyes to see it.Ethan had not moved from the chair. The blanket the nurse had given him was still around his shoulders. His neck ached. His hand had gone numb inside the old man's hand, and he hadn't dared to pull it free. The window was small and square, with a pale blind pulled halfway down. A thin line of gold crept in under the edge. It slid across the floor, climbed the foot of the bed, and touched the white blanket over William's knees. The old man's fingers twitched."Grandfather?"William's lips moved behind the oxygen mask. No sound came out. His eyes went to the window, then back to Ethan's face."I know," Ethan whispered. "I know. Wait."He stood up so fast the chair scraped. He crossed the room and pulled the cord. The blind rattled up, and the whole sky poured in, pink and orange and gold, with the harbor cranes standing black against it like the bones of some enormous animal

Victoria Ashford had never been inside the Atlas building, but she knew it as soon as she saw it.She and Emma stood on the sidewalk on Fifth Avenue at ten o'clock on Saturday morning, in the thin November sun. Between them they held one handbag, one umbrella, and one sealed envelope. The street was loud with traffic. People hurried past, bundled in scarves.Above them, the tower rose straight and black into the clouds. It had no sign. No logo. No flag. It was just a sheer wall of dark glass, so high that Victoria had to tip her head all the way back, and so quiet that it seemed to swallow the noise of the street."It's a bank," Emma murmured."It's more than that.""Mom.""I can feel it.""Feel what?""I don't know." Victoria pressed her gloved hand flat against her coat, just below the collarbone. "Something is pulling."Emma looked at her for a long moment. She had never heard her mother say anything like that. In thirty years, Victoria Ashford had never said she could feel anything

The auction notice went up on the Cedar Hill gates on Monday morning, and Chloe Ashford tore it down. She did it before breakfast, in her school uniform, with her backpack hanging off one shoulder. She tore it into very small pieces and dropped them in the hedge. Then she stood at the end of the long gravel drive and looked back at the house. It looked the same as it always had. Gray stone. Tall chimneys. Ivy going red on the south wall.It didn't look like something that could be taken away."Miss Chloe." Joe Baker leaned out of the Rolls-Royce window. "You'll be late.""I don't care.""I know." He gave her a gentle, rueful look. "But your mother will, so get in."She got in.By eleven o'clock, Richard Ashford had read the notice four times.Foreclosure sale. Cedar Hill Estate, including main house, grounds, and outbuildings.
