Chapter Eleven
Mrs. Derry's lecture went on for another half hour, when she was done she packed up her things and quickly walked out of the lab leaving the students behind. Students started gathering their belongings and heading towards their next class.Nelson was still seated, feeling the lingering stares from his school mates as they filled out of the lab. He glanced over at the girl sitting next to him, she was calmly packing her bags with an unreasonable expression on her face. Just as he was about to gather his things, Nelson was stopped by Claire who matched his desk. Her face was a mix of annoyance and something else, like guilt.“Nelson," she started with a flat tone. “I want to break up with you. Not that what we had was much of a relationship, I just want to make things clear so that there's no blurred lines," she said, trying to stop Nelson from begging her not to leave.Nelson squinted at her, well aware that the girl sitting next to him had just heard everything Claire blurted out. Ne

Nelson looked at Claire. She was staring at the ground now and her face was bright red.“She told me how she finally got the courage to leave," Derek continued. This time he made his voice even louder, making sure that people around them could hear. "She said she was tired of pretending, tired of being with someone who couldn't even afford to take her on a proper date…”Nelson’s jaw tightened as he felt Hibino stiffen beside him.“She told me about your house too," Derek went on, with a large grin on his face. “Leaky roof, broken heater, your Mom working two jobs even with her… condition. It must be hard, fish. It must be really hard knowing that no matter how hard you try or how smart you think you are, you'll always be… this." He gestured at Nelson's worn shoes.Nelson tried to speak, but just as he was about to open his mouth to say something, he saw Hibino step forward with his fists clenched and the brown stain on his pants even more pronounced than before. "You shut your gorilla

Hibino could barely contain himself, he circled the Corvette two times, each time gasping like a frightened animal. He took his time to run his eyes over every inch of it like he was afraid it would somehow disappear if he looked away for too long.“Nel…” he slowly shook his head. "No way.”Nelson watched his friend while having a proud smirk on his face and leaning against the vehicle."Nelson, that is a freaking Corvette… are these things actually real? I thought they only existed in GTA six how the fuck do you have one? It must have cost you a bazillion pounds!” Hibino yelled at the car with his index finger pointing straight at it."Yep, that's definitely a Corvette buddy.” Nelson said as he opened the door to the driver's seat.He was about to get into the car when he noticed Hibino's expression alter immediately and it switched from excited to confused. His mouth was narrowed to a slit and his bushy eyebrows were furrowed.“Don't give me that nonchalant, cool Jewish boy act. You

Nelson's eyes were fixed on the road. Even though he was paying full attention to his driving, he was also using parts of his consciousness to go through the system's options. He was at a crossroads here because all the choices seemed mediocre at best and weren't really giving the edge and the adrenaline he was hoping to introduce for the date. He hadn't originally had anything planned when he was on his way to pick up Vivian, he assumed she would come up with something, but for some reason he forgot he was dealing with a woman in her utmost female embodiment. He turned to his right hand and took one short glance at Vivian. She responded with a short raise of perfectly shaped eyebrows. And just like that, an idea popped into his head like a literal bulb.“Trust me," Nelson said, his voice softening as he turned back to face the road. “You're gonna love where we're going." Soon enough, they arrived at their destination. Nelson turned into a well-lit parking lot, and as the car slowed

Nelson fumbled with his seatbelt causing the metallic click of the belt to echo inside the Corvette like a trap snapping shut.He exhaled sharply and gripped the leather wrapped steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles shone chalk white from the straining pressure. Outside his windshield, the staging line blasted loudly with the engine sound of different cars with amateur drivers inside them To his left, Dexter's Porsche 911 revved with a rhythmic, low frequency that somehow vibrated straight through the windshield of his car.Nelson bit his lip, he knew without a shadow of a doubt that Dexter was a damn good rider and he stood no chance against any of the other drivers, talk more of him.“Come on… give me a set. Anything.” Nelson stared at the space just above his dashboard, desperately waiting for the familiar translucent golden interface to flood his vision. Since learning that the system could grant rewards outside of money and wealth he guessed that if he was able to trigge

The Corvette's engine purred down the darkened road, the city lights blurred into streaks of gold and red. Nelson's fingers rested loosely on the steering wheel, the leather was still very much from his grip during the race.Beside him, Vivian sat with her head tipped back against the headrest, her eyes were half closed and a small smile played at the corners of her mouth. The adrenaline had settled into something now softer, it was like a quiet hum between them.Nelson turned his head to take a quick look at her, at that moment he was stunned by what he saw. It was Vivian alright, but hovering right above her head was a small translucent golden interface showing a dialogue box.He looked back at the road so as to not make Vivian uncomfortable, ‘Oh, so now you show up huh?!’ he thought to himself. He looked at the box again to see exactly what it read.[Vivian Thompson’s Affection: 80\100]The numbers glowed right above her head then faded into golden dust and disintegrated. Nelson'

Nelson had to scratch his eyes awake the next morning, as sunlight filtered through his curtains, casting a warm glow across his room. Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, he noticed his phone blinking with notifications. There were two messages: one from Vivian, which was sent this morning. He had forgotten to call when he got home the previous night so she was probably checking in on him. The other message was from his work place.A dry smile cracked across his lips as he tapped Vivian's message, then replied to it. Before he could put his phone down, he noticed several missed calls from his site manager at work.Nelson worked for a rapidly developing construction company called Primas Geo Contractors® as a Construction worker, in other words: instead of being the one to plan the layout of the building, he was amongst the men actually working with their hands and equipment to erect the building. The man who called— Site manager, was a very persuasive and greedy man who exploited despera

It took just over twenty minutes before Nelson arrived at Vivian's family mansion, having slowed his pace significantly to give her more time to prepare. He knew she would be nervous if he showed up too early. He rang the doorbell and waited a few seconds before ringing it again.Inside, Vivian let out a relieved sigh as she placed the last dish on the dining table. “Damn it, I barely made it," she whispered to herself, wiping her hands on her apron. She hurried to the door, peeked through the peephole, and saw it was Nelson. After a moment to compose herself, she opened the door.Nelson's eyes glanced over her, acknowledging within himself that the apron suited her so well. He smiled warmly, “Good morning again," he said with a light tone.“Good morning," she replied, still a bit nervous although she was able to not let it manifest on her face.“May I come in?" Nelson asked with a teasing grin.Vivian nodded, stepping a

Nelson couldn't believe the irony. He had just quit his job at the construction company, now he was the majority shareholder which gave him power over most of the affairs of the company. “What's the name of the guy you're talking about?" Nelson asked, though he already has a pretty great guess.“Oliver… Oliver Mcburnie" Vivian muttered.Nelson's smile froze and his expression turned icy. In his mind, he repeated the name, “Oliver… you really want me to send you to your maker, right?”Forcing a more relaxed smile Nelson reassured her. “Don't worry about it, Vivian. I'm sure everything will turn out just fine." Vivian was still uncertain but she was visibly conforted by his words, "I hope so too,” she whispered, trying to believe in his confidence. After chatting with Vivian for a bit longer, Nelson glanced at his time and realized it was almost time for his weekend study sessions with Hibino at the campus library. He stood up, offering Vivian a smile."I should get going. I've got a

Nelson pushed open the heavy mahogany doors of the campus library. As soon as he stepped in, he was immediately greeted by the low, continuous humming of a room packed to capacity. It was a Saturday afternoon, but with the mock exams inching closer day by day, every single desk, study cubicle and beanbag chair was occupied by engineering students of different majors. Groups of enthusiastic students were fixing their attention over textbooks, surrounded by empty coffee cups and scribbled notebook paper.Nelson scanned the crowded library, his eyes landed on a familiar broad shouldered figure near the back corner by the high glass windows. “Hibz," he muttered. His friend was slouched over a stack of massive manuals, his thick eyebrows were furrowed deeply with visible frustration as he aggressively chewed on the cap of a pink pen.Nelson made a beeline over, pulling out the empty wooden chair opposite him. Hibino looked up and just like that, his tense expression instantly relaxed int
