Ch-11 Five Minutes to Fall
“Your allies have less than five minutes before the bunker is overrun.”Adrian stared into the endless white.Five minutes.Elias was outside fighting men who wanted House Vale buried forever. Vanessa had already been kidnapped once tonight. Lucian might be an ally, a traitor, or something between the two.And Adrian was trapped inside a trial.“End it,” he said.Ghost answered immediately.“The First Crown Trial cannot be terminated without failure.”“I didn’t say terminate it.”Adrian looked toward the fading image of the First Guardian.“I said end it.”The Guardian studied him.“How?”“You said this trial measures judgment.”“Yes.”“Nathaniel said a king is the person forced to choose who suffers.”The Guardian remained silent.Adrian stepped forward.“So stop showing me dead cities and asking philosophical questions.”His voice hardened.“Give me the decision.”The white void trembled. For several seconds, nothing happened. Then the Guardian smiled.“Very well.”The world changed
Ch-12 A Message from the Dead
SHE IS THE REASON YOUR FATHER DIED. Adrian read the words twice. His mother’s name remained above them. AUTHORIZED USER: ELENA VALE For several seconds, the victory of earning the First Crown meant nothing. “Ghost.” “Listening.” “Is the message authentic?” A pause. “Signature authentication: valid.” “Could it have been forged?” “Probability: 0.003 percent.” Adrian looked toward the sealed Trial door. Seraphina was waiting on the other side. “Then my mother wrote it.” “Unknown.” Adrian frowned. “You just authenticated it.” “I authenticated Elena Vale’s credentials. I cannot verify who entered the message.” A useful distinction. And a dangerous one. “When?” “Timestamp unavailable.” “Why?” “The message was stored inside an isolated Transport node. It activated only after First Crown succession.” Adrian stared at the warning. His mother—or someone using her authority—had hidden a message where only the future holder of the First Crown could find it. A message s

“Your father was still inside.” Elena’s voice faded into static. Vanessa kept the pistol trained on Seraphina. Adrian didn’t move. Neither did Seraphina. The abandoned station suddenly felt smaller. “Put the gun down,” Adrian said. Vanessa looked at him. “She killed your father.” “I said put it down.” After a moment, Vanessa lowered the weapon. Adrian kept his eyes on Seraphina. “Now you.” Seraphina’s expression remained composed, but her hands had tightened at her sides. “Explain.” “There is nothing I can say that will make what happened simple.” “Good.” Adrian stepped closer. “I’m tired of simple answers.” Ghost projected the historical record above the open case. CROWN CHAMBER EXECUTION SYSTEM ACTIVATED: 23:43:07 AUTHORIZED USER: SERAPHINA VALE Adrian read it once. “Did you activate it?” “Yes.” Vanessa inhaled sharply. “Was Alexander inside?” “Yes.” “Did you know?” Seraphina met Adrian’s eyes. “Yes.” Three answers.
Ch-14 the empty throne
“You’ve spent your entire life wondering who killed House Vale.” The unknown voice filled Station Seven. “I think it’s time…” “…you learned who created it.” Adrian stood motionless in the darkness. Vanessa’s pistol tracked uselessly from one shadow to another. Seraphina looked toward the dead screens. “Disconnect the station.” Ghost didn’t respond. “Ghost?” Nothing. The stranger had silenced him. Adrian looked toward the abandoned Vale vehicle. “Emergency power.” No response. Seraphina reached beneath her sleeve and removed a thin metal pin. “What are you doing?” “Something Alexander hated.” She crossed to a wall panel and drove the pin between two plates. Sparks erupted. Vanessa stepped back. “That seems healthy.” “Vale systems were designed to reject unauthorized access.” Seraphina twisted the pin. “They were not designed to survive someone being rude.” A strip of emergency lights flickered on. Ghost’s face returned to one screen. Distorted. “Local syste

“But you missed forty-eight.”Cassian’s voice disappeared. The station fell silent.Adrian stared at the map.Almost a third of his newly awakened Transport network had turned black.Twenty-three vehicles.Four warehouses. Two underground stations.Three logistics hubs. And something beneath Blackthorn Tower that Ghost could no longer identify.Adrian had held the First Crown for less than an hour.Someone was already stealing it from him.Vanessa broke the silence.“So let me make sure I understand.”She pointed toward the map.“Your supposedly dead relative just stole part of your secret empire and claims your supposedly dead mother is alive.”Adrian looked at her.“That appears accurate.”“And this is considered a normal night for your family?”“I found out I had this family tonight.”“Fair.”Seraphina wasn't listening. She stared at the black circle on the screen.“Cassian.”Adrian turned toward her.“Start talking.”She remained silent.“Thirty-one years ago,” Adrian continued, “
ch-16 The Other Alexander
“Let’s see which one of us deserves the empire.” The words hung in Station Seven. Adrian stared at the screen. Alexander Vale stared back. Not Ghost. The difference was subtle. Ghost carried Alexander’s face, voice, and mannerisms, but there was always something artificial in his stillness. This version breathed. Blinking naturally. Watching. Waiting. As though a dead man had found a window. “Identify yourself,” Adrian said. The figure smiled. “You already have.” “Ghost.” Ghost appeared on the adjacent screen. Two identical faces now looked at Adrian. “Entity designation unknown.” The other Alexander laughed. “Still obedient.” Ghost ignored him. “Architecture differs significantly from my own.” “Human?” Adrian asked. “No.” The answer came immediately. The second Alexander leaned toward the screen. “Neither are you, technically.” Ghost remained expressionless. Seraphina stepped closer. “King Protocol.” Alexander’s smile faded. “Hello, Seraphina.” She st

“Yours.” Adrian stared at Ghost. The word should have been simple. It wasn't. “Explain.” Ghost’s face remained on the damaged station monitor. “An encrypted memory partition exists within your historical medical archive.” “My medical archive?” “Correct.” “Why would my memories be stored in a computer?” Ghost hesitated. That hesitation was becoming something Adrian hated. “Answer.” “Because they were removed.” Vanessa slowly lowered the pistol. “Removed?” Adrian didn't look at her. “From me?” “Yes.” The station seemed to become colder. Adrian had spent eighteen years beli

“And Dad doesn’t know she’s still alive.” The recording ended. No one spoke. Adrian stared at the frozen image of his six-year-old self. A child who had been frightened enough to erase his own memories. A child who had hidden a person from Alexander Vale. “Play it again,” Adrian said. Ghost obeyed. The recording restarted. Adrian ignored the words this time. He watched everything else. The white room. The table. The camera angle. The glass wall behind the boy. And the shadow. Something had moved there. “Stop.” The image froze. “Go back three seconds.” Ghost reversed the recording. “Forward slowly.” Frame by frame, the shadow moved behind the glass. Vanessa stepped closer. “That’s definitely someone.” Seraphina narrowed her eyes. “A child.” Adrian saw it too. Small shoulders. Long hair. A hand pressed briefly against the glass. Then gone. “Enhance it.” “Image quality insufficient.” “Try.” Ghost processed the frame. The blurred figure sharpened slight
ch-19 Subject Two
DO NOT TRUST YOUR MOTHER. Adrian stared at the message. Twenty minutes ago, Elena Vale had been the dead mother he barely remembered. Then she became the woman who had survived. Then a scientist whose research had changed his mind. Now a stranger from his erased childhood was warning him against her. Vanessa read the message over his shoulder. “Your family really hates trust.” Adrian almost laughed. Almost. “Ghost. Arrival time?” “Six minutes, forty-one seconds.” “Can you communicate with the vehicle?” “Yes.” “Open a channel.” “Connection refused.” Adrian frowned. “By whom?” “Passenger.” Seraphina stepped toward the map. “She wants to control the meeting.” “Then she remembers me.” “Or she knows who you became.” Cassian remained visible on the small device. “Do not meet her alone.” Adrian looked at him. “You're giving me advice now?” “I’m trying to keep you alive.” “You stole a third of my division.” “I quarantined it.” “You hid my mother.” “To keep you a
ch-20 Subject One
SUBJECT 01: ELENA VALE Adrian stared at the screen. For once, his mind found no pattern. No mechanism. No hidden structure. Only contradiction. “Elena was an adult before I was born.” “Yes,” Mira said. “She designed the research.” “Yes.” “Then how was she Subject One?” Mira looked toward Ghost. “Because everyone assumes the subjects were numbered by age.” “They weren't.” “Then by what?” “Sequence.” Adrian waited. Mira’s voice lowered. “Subject One was the first successful human application.” Seraphina stepped closer. “Elena tested the procedure on herself?” “No.” Mira looked at her. “Someone tested it on Elena.” Ghost immediately responded. “No supporting record.” Mira gave the screen a cold glance. “You're missing seventeen percent of Alexander's memories.” “Correct.” “And nearly all records from Center Nine.” “Correct.” “Then perhaps stop pretending absence is evidence.” Ghost went silent. Vanessa looked between them. “If Elena was the first subject
