ch-40 The Night House Vale Fell
Whatever Adrian had forgotten, both his parents were afraid of him remembering it. That was enough. He looked at Elena first. “Tell me.” She said nothing. “Now.” Alexander stepped forward. “Adrian, this is not the time.” Adrian turned toward him. “You've both used that sentence my entire life.” The black door shifted behind them. Three centimeters. Maybe slightly more. Oracle whispered through the gap. They will lie. Adrian didn't look at it. “Stay out of this.” A soft laugh came from beyond Station One. I already know the answer. “Good for you.” Then Adrian looked back at his mother. “Elena.” Her eyes were wet. “House Vale did not fall in one night.” “That's not what I asked.” “No.” “But it matters.” “Then make it matter quickly.” She flinched. “Your body.” Adrian stared at Alexander. For a second, the words made no sense. “Alexander.” Adrian tightened his grip on the radio. Nobody in the room moved. Cassian’s face changed first. “That’s impossible.” Nathan’s weak voice crackled through the speaker. “Tonight has made that word useless.” Vanessa quietly nodded. “Finally, someone said it.” Adrian ignored her. “Which Alexander?” Silence. For several seconds, nobody spoke.
