Chapter 11: The Sword Chooses
Jayden looked at the Black Sun in Dante’s hand and slowly smiled, though there was no warmth in it. “What a pity.”Dante’s brows drew together. “What?”“You have carried my father’s sword for all these years, yet it never truly recognised you.” Jayden’s gaze moved from Dante’s face to the weapon. “That is why you have never been able to draw out even half of its real power.”A murmur moved through the colosseum. Dante’s expression hardened almost immediately, though his grip around the hilt tightened. “Nonsense. This sword helped me crush every rival who stood against me and take control of Skyreach. If it never recognised me, then how did it carry me this far?”Jayden gave a low chuckle. “Because being able to swing a weapon and being accepted by it are two different things. A borrowed blade can still cut, but it will never become part of your hand.”Dante’s eyes turned cold. “You speak as though you understand the Black Sun better than the man who has wielded it for years.”“I do.”
Chapter 12: The Old Fox Smiles
Dante stared at the Black Sun resting in Jayden’s hand, and for the first time since stepping into the arena, the calm on his face slipped. A thin layer of sweat formed across his brow as he understood exactly how bad the situation had become. The sword had rejected him in front of everyone, shattered his attack and flown straight into Jayden’s hand like it had only been waiting for its rightful owner to return. If the crowd began connecting that to Jayden’s accusations about the past, questions would follow, and those questions were the last thing Dante needed. But panic would only make things worse, so he swallowed it down, straightened his robes and slowly withdrew the magic around him. “Enough.”The sudden change confused the crowd. A moment ago, Dante had been preparing to kill Jayden with the Black Sun, yet now he stood there looking almost composed again. Even Asher, still badly injured near the edge of the arena, turned toward his father in disbelief.Dante forced a faint sm
Chapter 13: Kneel
The colosseum was still buzzing with shock when the first group of nobles began approaching Jayden.A few moments ago, most of them had been praising Asher, laughing at Mira and whispering that Jayden was a madman. Now that Dante himself had recognised him as the new Lord of Skyreach, their faces had changed completely.“Congratulations, Lord Jayden.”“Skyreach is fortunate to have someone of your strength.”“House Jian has truly regained its glory.”The compliments came one after another, some so shameless that Mira almost looked disgusted on Jayden’s behalf, but Jayden barely spared them a glance. He had no interest in people whose loyalty changed faster than the wind.Instead, he turned toward Mira and Nia.“We’re leaving.”Mira blinked. “Leaving?”Jayden nodded. “Back to Voss Manor.”The little colour left in Mira’s face changed. That place had become a cage to her. Even hearing its name brought back cold rooms, chains around her wrists and nights spent wondering whether Nia was c
Chapter 14: Dead to Us
The moment the word left Jayden’s mouth, the pressure around him changed and golden force crashed through the courtyard. The Voss guards were the first to buckle. Several tried to drive their weapons into the ground to support themselves, while Ronan forced magic through his legs and gritted his teeth, refusing to bend. Sera screamed at everyone to stand their ground, but her own knees were already shaking. Then the pressure increased and weapons clattered across the stone. One after another, the guards dropped to their knees. Ronan followed with a furious grunt, both palms hitting the ground as the force crushed what remained of his resistance. Sera fell beside him, while the elders of House Voss were forced down almost at the same time.Even Mira’s parents could not remain standing.Only the head of House Voss was spared from the pressure The old man looked around at his family kneeling before one person, then back at Jayden. Sweat slowly appeared along his forehead.Jayden walked
Chapter 15: Too Late to Regret
Jayden looked at Mira for a moment, then gently patted the back of her hand. “It's okay now dear, no killing.”Mira nodded with a tired smile and the killing intent around him faded, but no one in the courtyard relaxed. Sera was still on the ground clutching her ruined legs, Ronan knelt beside her trying to help while glaring at Jayden, and the rest of the Voss family remained under the heavy pressure that had forced them down. Jayden’s eyes moved to Ronan next, and that alone made the man’s expression change.“You,” Jayden said.Ronan straightened slightly despite the pressure. “What now?”Jayden walked toward him without hurry. “Your wife bullied a child under your roof, and you somehow knew nothing.”Ronan’s jaw tightened. “I did not know everything Sera was doing.”Jayden gave a faint smile. “Interesting. Everyone in this family suddenly becomes blind whenever responsibility arrives.”Ronan’s face darkened. “Watch how you speak to me.”“To you?” Jayden stopped in front of him. “If
Chapter 16: Safe At Last
The dragon descended before a quiet mansion on the outskirtsJayden stepped down first, then helped Mira while carrying Nia in one arm. The little girl had been smiling throughout most of the journey, fascinated by the clouds and the fact that she had finally been reunited with both her parents, but the excitement had clearly drained what little strength she had left. The covenant dragon lowered its massive head before Jayden.Jayden gave it a slight nod. “Go.”The beast released a low rumble, spread its wings and rose into the sky before disappearing beyond the clouds.Nia watched it leave with sleepy eyes. “Daddy… can we ride it again?”“When you’re stronger.”She smiled weakly. “Promise?”“Promise.”That seemed enough for her.The three entered the mansion, and the moment the doors closed behind them, Nia’s body finally relaxed. There were no guards dragging her away, no Sera shouting, or anyone telling her to sweep or stay out of sight. For the first time in a long while, she did
Chapter 17: Hunting for Dinner
The tear in space opened above the frontier, and Jayden stepped out into the cold wind of Grey Pass.He had expected to hunt quietly and leave, but the sounds of battle reached him almost immediately. Steel struck horns, soldiers shouted orders, and somewhere ahead, heavy hooves crashed against the frozen ground hard enough to shake it.Jayden looked over.A herd of Five-horned Buffaloes had broken into the soldiers’ defensive line. There were almost twenty of them, each nearly twice the size of an ordinary buffalo, with five thick horns curving from their heads and dark energy wrapped around their bodies. Several soldiers had already been thrown aside, while others struggled to keep the beasts from charging deeper into the camp.“Hold the line!”“Don’t let them break through!”A soldier drove a spear into one beast’s shoulder, but the weapon barely entered before the buffalo swung its head and sent him flying. The captain cursed under his breath.“Peak Level Five…”That was the probl
Chapter 18: Too Much for Her Body
By the time Jayden returned to the mansion, the sky outside had already begun to darken. He did not bother going upstairs first. Mira and Nia were still resting, and that was exactly what they needed, so he carried the massive Five-horned Buffalo straight into the kitchen and got to work. For someone who had spent years fighting at Grey Pass, learning cultivation techniques and surviving trials that would kill most men, cooking was surprisingly one of the easier things Jayden had learned. Lady Vara had always said that if a cultivator could control fire well enough to burn an enemy without destroying the ground beneath him, then he had no excuse for burning dinner.Still, this meal required more than ordinary cooking. The Five-horned Buffalo had reached the peak of Level Five, which meant its flesh contained a large amount of Neen... the natural power cultivated by humans and beasts alike. Humans gathered Neen through their cultivation paths, strengthening their bodies, cores and tech
Chapter 19: Too Pure
For one brief moment, Jayden froze. His eyes widened as he stared at the glowing lines spreading beneath Mira’s skin. He had refined the buffalo meat himself, drawn out most of the violent Neen and even used the Snow Lotus to make what remained as gentle as possible. He had been careful specifically because Mira and Nia had been deprived of proper food and cultivation resources for years.Yet Mira looked like she was about to burst from the inside.Jayden’s gaze snapped toward Nia.The little girl had stopped eating only because everyone else had stopped, but there was nothing unusual about her. No trembling, overflowing Neen or light beneath her skin. She simply sat there gripping her spoon while staring at her mother with frightened eyes.“Daddy… what’s wrong with Mother?”“I’m handling it.”Jayden was already moving. He reached Mira’s side before she could slip from the chair and caught her shoulders. Her breathing had become uneven, while the Neen inside her surged through weakene
Chapter 20: The Gluttonous Body
Mira stared at the bowl in front of her for several seconds before finally lifting the spoon again. She was still hesitant after what had just happened, but she trusted Jayden enough to know he would never knowingly give her something that could hurt her. So she took another mouthful, waited, then another. This time, no violent Neen surged through her channels and no light appeared beneath her skin.Nia watched her closely from the other side of the table. “Mother, are you okay?”Mira nodded and gave her a reassuring smile. “I’m fine now. Go on and eat before yours gets cold.”Nia still looked uncertain, but after watching Mira take another spoonful without anything happening, she slowly returned to her own food. Within moments, she was eating happily again.Jayden, however, was no longer paying attention to Mira. His eyes had settled on Nia.The little girl had eaten even more of the buffalo meat than Mira, yet there had not been the slightest reaction from her body. No overflowing N
