Chapter 1: The Trial at Grey Pass
“My lord, please join the Frontier Knights.”The captain dropped to one knee before Jayden Jian.Behind him, the surviving knights followed, ignoring their wounds as they lowered their heads. Some still had broken arrows buried in their armour, while others could barely remain upright, but the desperation in their voices was clear.“Remain at Grey Pass,” the captain pleaded. “Name your price. Gold, land, rank, anything. As long as you protect this frontier, Midgard will never fear another invasion.”Jayden stood silently before them.Around him, the snow had turned red. Dead Frost Giants covered the broken pass, and farther behind him lay Korr, the colossal dragon that had led the invasion. One of its wings had been torn apart, while smoke still rose from the wound across its neck.Moments ago, the Frontier Knights had been waiting to die.The Frost Giants had crushed their defensive line, and when Korr descended from the sky, even the captain had known Grey Pass would fall but then J
Chapter 2: Nia Jian
Nia kept sweeping near the edge of the courtyard with her head lowered. The other children of House Voss were still playing, laughing in their clean clothes while servants brought them snacks and warm drinks. No one looked at Nia unless they wanted to mock, scold or order her, so she tried to make herself small and quiet. But Liam saw the jade pendant around her neck as it hung low from her clothes and greed took overHe stopped playing and walked toward her with two other children behind him. His clothes were neat, face was proud, and because he was Sera Voss’s son, no one in the manor dared offend him.“What is that?” Liam asked, pointing at the pendant.Nia quickly covered it with her hand. “It’s mine.”Liam’s eyes narrowed. “Yours? Someone like you has something that pretty?”The other children laughed and Nia lowered her head and tried to move away, but Liam blocked her path. “Give it to me.”“No,” Nia said, her small voice shaking but firm.Liam’s face changed at once. “You dare
Chapter 3: Wrong Answer
The pressure around Jayden spread around and the guards closest to him staggered back, their faces turning pale. Even the horses and some tamed beasts outside the manor gate neighed wildly and tried to break free from their ropes.Nia trembled in his arms, then slowly raised her small hand and touched the back of his palm.“Father…”That one word pulled Jayden back. The terrifying aura receded at once, vanishing so cleanly it was as if it had never existed. Jayden looked down at her again, slower this time taking in her beautiful features The dirt on her face had hidden it before. The swollen cheek had twisted her features, and the tears had made her look even smaller, but now that he looked properly, he saw it.His eyes, Mira’s face and his blood flowing through her.Jayden’s fingers tightened slightly around the jade pendant. This child was his no doubt and for a moment, the man who had slain Frost Giants and Korr without flinching could not move.He had returned for Mira, believin
Chapter 4: When the Dragon Bowed
“Daddy, be careful!”Nia’s frightened cry followed the Voss warriors as they rushed forward. Tears poured from her swollen eyes, and her small fingers twisted tightly into the back of Jayden’s cloak.Jayden glanced over his shoulder and gave her a faint smile.“Stay behind me, little moon. It will be over in a moment.”The first sword came down.Jayden stepped aside, caught the warrior’s wrist and drove his palm into the man’s chest. The impact threw him backward, taking two others down with him.A spear came from Jayden’s left.He seized the shaft without looking and pulled. The warrior stumbled forward, and Jayden’s knee met his stomach before the spear snapped between his hands. The rest attacked together.Steel flashed from every side, but none of it touched him. Jayden moved through them without hurry, breaking a sword with his elbow, knocking one man into the wall and sweeping another off his feet. A warrior gathered flames around his fist and aimed for Jayden’s back, but Jayden
Chapter 5: What Loyalty Cost Her
The Skyreach Arena was already crowded by the time Mira entered the private section with a tray in her hands.Warriors from powerful houses gathered around the fighting platform, preparing for the battle that would decide the next lord of Skyreach. Nobles sat beneath decorated shades while servants moved between them with food and wine, careful not to interrupt the excited conversations filling the arena.Mira moved more slowly than the other servants. The plain dress hanging from her body was too large, hiding how much weight she had lost since she was brought there. Her fingers were bruised from work, face was pale, and dark marks circled both wrists beneath the magical restraints that sealed her power.Every step hurts. She had been awake since before sunrise, cleaning rooms, carrying water and obeying every cruel order given to her. They barely fed her, but refusing to work meant punishment, and punishment meant she might not survive long enough to see Nia again. That thought kept
Chapter 6: The Final Challenger
The horn sounded across the Skyreach Colosseum. The first challenger stepped onto the platform with a broad sword resting on his shoulder. Flames curled around both arms, and the crowd cheered as he faced Asher.“Begin!”The man rushed forward.“Flamebreaker Slash!”His sword came down, releasing a wave of fire that tore across the stone. Asher did not retreat. He raised one hand, and a thick wall of blue ice rose before him.Fire struck ice and steam filled the arena. Before the challenger could see through it, Asher stepped from the mist and caught the burning blade with his bare hand. The flames died.Asher looked almost disappointed. “That was all?”Ice spread from his fingers, covering the sword and crawling over the man’s arms. The challenger tried to pull away, but Asher struck his chest with one palm. The frozen armour shattered. The man flew off the platform and landed unconscious below. The crowd erupted.“One move!”“Asher crushed fire with ice!”“He is already stronger tha
Chapter 7: The Price of Defiance
The colosseum went silent as Mira stepped onto the platform but soon the shock faded and laughter began.A servant with magical restraints challenging Asher, the man who had just crushed every warrior before him, sounded more like a joke than a fight.Asher looked at her plain dress and empty hands, then laughed with the crowd.“Have the beatings finally damaged your head?”Mira stopped across from him. “I said I challenge you.”A noble called from the stands, “Will she fight with a serving tray?”Another voice followed. “Perhaps she thinks stubbornness is a weapon.”Mira glanced in their direction. “A noisy market always has more mouths than brains.”The laughter around died down a bit and she scoffed then turned to face AsherAsher’s smile thinned. “Where did you find this courage?”“I would rather die here than spend one night as your mistress.”The crowd stirred, but Mira was not finished.“And wipe that proud look off your face. You defeated frightened men and almost broke your a
Chapter 8: The Difference Between Us
The tiny black stone struck Asher’s frost blade and shattered it into glittering fragments and for a moment, no one moved. Then a deep roar rolled over the colosseum.Heads lifted as the Guardian Covenant Dragon of House Voss circled above the arena. Its massive wings blocked the light, throwing the stands into shadow, yet no one understood why the beast had left Voss Manor or why it carried two figures on its back. The dragon swept lower and a man leapt from it with a little girl held securely in one arm. His cloak snapped behind him as he descended, landing between Mira and Asher hard enough to send cracks through the platform. The dragon gave one final roar before turning away and as the dust settled, the crowd finally saw the man’s face.“Jayden Jian?” an old man called and the name spread through the colosseum like fire.Nobles rose from their seats, elders leaned forward, and the surviving members of House Jian stared as though a dead man had stepped out of his grave. But Nia sa
Chapter 9: A Sword Without Honor
Asher’s face twisted beneath Jayden’s grip.Only moments ago, the whole colosseum had praised him as Skyreach’s greatest talent. Now he lay pinned beneath the man he had spent years trying to surpass.“I refuse to lose to you!”Frost exploded from his body.Asher tore himself free and stumbled back, pouring everything he had left into one final spell. A dark seal opened above the platform, and frozen lightning gathered within it until the air began to crack.Several elders rose at once.“Asher, stop!”He ignored them.“If I cannot surpass you,” he snarled, blood running down his chin, “then I will bury you!”The seal broke.A pillar of frost and lightning crashed toward Jayden, freezing the platform in its path.Jayden did not block it.He stepped through the storm. The frost split around his body, and before Asher could understand what had happened, Jayden was already standing before him.The back of his hand struck Asher’s chest and he flew across the arena and smashed through two s
Chapter 10: His Father’s Sword
The colosseum remained silent watching Ryder lay beneath the broken wall with the remains of his sword beside him, while Jayden stood at the centre of the platform without a visible injury. One of Skyreach’s three greatest swordsmen had attacked him with a technique he had spent decades mastering, yet Jayden had found its weakness, broken the sword and defeated its owner in a few movements. No one knew what to say.Dante remained seated on the highest platform, but the fingers resting on his chair had tightened.Jayden was far stronger than he expected but still, Dante did not interfere. He needed to understand the full extent of Jayden’s power, and the more violently Jayden behaved before the crowd, the easier it would be to condemn him as a madman who had returned to destroy his own family.A low groan came from the rubble, Asher had regained consciousness. He pushed weakly against the stones covering him, still trying to understand what had happened, but Jayden reached him before h
